2000 Chevrolet Malibu. Consumer writes in regards to theft system light malfunction causes vehicle not to start, has had ignition cylinder/passlock sensor replaced several times and problem still exists. The consumer stated the vehicle takes 10 to 25 minutes before the theft system light to go off. Updated 03/31/2017.
The theft system, passlock, fails causing the car to not start for 10 minutes. This can and has happened consecutively, sometimes causing a wait of 30 minutes, before the car can be started. Apparently the theft deterrent system is defective, known issue with gm, and does not read the key properly when inserted in the ignition system. So, it will shut off the fuel pump to the engine, disabling the engine.

Theft system light comes on for no reason and car won't start. Have to put key in ignition for 10-15 min before it will start. Recurs at least once a week now. Should be a recall!.
The car fails to start due to the passlock ii system failure. It will not engage the fuel pump and/or ignition system. The theft lockout system light stays on or flashes all other dash warning lights do not light up. The car will start randomly when attempting to start the car. The passlock ii relearning method has to be used to start the car as instructed by gm in the owners manual section 2 page 17 when the theft system fails. This method will work randomly. No know repair.

Since purchasing the vehicle (used), there have been more than 12 instances where the car cuts out while driving. This has occurred at speeds as high as 55 mph. There is a total loss of power and the car must be brought to a rolling stop outside of the traffic flow. Also, there have been weekly instances of the car failing to start. This has since increased to daily. The key will only start the ignition when the dash lights (battery, oil, etc) are on, and they are on and off completely at random. Sometimes I have to wait up to 10 minutes with the key partially turned before the lights come on and I can turn it the rest of the way and start the car. The other electrical issue that has happened is that the blower fan has gone on and off and the power windows have gone on and off.
My 2003 Chevrolet Malibu shuts off while driving. It happens two or three times each day. Initially I only had problems with the engine not starting and having to wait 10 minutes before starting. It is a very dangerous situation. I went to a repair shop nd they said it was my ignition. This is a scary and dangerous situation.

I have a 2001 Malibu I bought brand new. It went to the point where it just wont start. What's happening is the theft system light starts flashing. So I have to set 10 minutes with the ignition lights on and then it will start. But it keeps happening, I was told the only way to fix it is by taking it to the dealer to have expensive work done on it, why would Chevrolet put a system in that is that faulty. I seen on line its about the theft pass over system. There's alot of people having problems with it, is this what I get trusting Chevrolet.
Theft system on my 99 chevy Malibu has been a constant source of trouble for the last 5 years. Have replaced ignition cylinder 3 times but still causing problems. This does not work and causes major problems for the drivers especially when it disables the car several times in a row. It appears the system malfunctions in many models and gm is probably aware it was a bad product and should be recalled.
I pulled into my driveway as I normally do. I turned the key to the off position and went to remove the key from the ignition. The key would not come out. It got jammed. I had to pull it out. It took about 10 mins for me to get it out. The first time it had happened was 10/27/09 at about 9:15pm.
