My mother owns a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu that sometimes will not start because the theft deterrent system gets a false reading and shuts off power to the fuel pump. Placing the ignition key in the on position for 10 minutes will usually reset the theft system. This problem has happened to us several times. I did an online search and found where many people have experienced this same problem. Some have spent several hundred dollars trying to correct the problem. Can gm be forced to correct this. Now that we the people own a majority stake in the company, it seems a perfect time to have this corrected. You know that they knew about the passlock problem, but in their arrogance and greed, would not correct it. If you have any questions please call james mcdonald. Also, if you want to see other peoples complains do a google search of Chevrolet Malibu theft deterrent system problem and you will see the numerous complaints. If this cannot be corrected with your intervention, I will never buy another general motors product. Thank you for your time.

Theft system on car occasionally kicks in, preventing starting for 10 minutes or more. This happens when I put in key quickly to start car. Usually I can remember to insert the key, let it register, and then turn the ignition. The first couple of times it happened I didn't know the problem and had it towed. The dealer fixed it once, said it was warranty work, the next time a mechanic put in a new ignition system which helped for a while.
2002 chevy Malibu, 80,000 miles brakes always noisy even when new. . Brakes and calipers have to be replaced every 2-3 months with minimal use. . . . . . Hazard light and turn signal failure. . . Works intermittently. . . . . Ignition lock-out. . . . Could not start car or remove key from the ignition. . . . Lower intake manifold gasket failure. . . . . . Left headlamp field of vision narrow and short.
2002 chevy Malibu has a faulty passlock system that disables the vehicle about 25% of the time when a valid key is inserted into ignition. Safety issue if person needs medical attention, if in dangerous area, or if car needs to be started and refuses to do so because of faulty part. I have found a workaround that has seemed to work for me. Place key in ignition, turn to "on" position. Open driver's side door and wait until warning chime comes on. Then turn car on as normally. Seems like the passlock system has a hard time registering if there is a key. Anyway, this is simply unacceptable on gm's part and I sincerely believe a recall should be issued for this problem.
2002 chevy Malibu won't start occasionally passlode problem diag at local dealer ignition replaced and keys reprogrammed cost $398. 60 . Still have problem that we took car to dealer in first place for. Dealer can not fix problem what do we do this is unsafe for wife and young child to become stranded on a daily bases. I have done some research and have come to find out that this is an ongoing problem with the passlock systems from gm. We have also had to replace the intake manifold gasket and have sense learned about the ongoing problems with the dexcool coolant causing gasket failure . We need help.
Every 50 or so attempts at starting my 2000 Malibu the car won't start unless I leave the ignition set to "on" for 10 minutes. I have been unable to repair the problem so far.

Ran several errands and the car started fine three times that morning. The fourth time it would crank but not turn over. Let it sit for 30 minutes and tried again. Same problem. Let it sit for 4 hours. Same problem. Also, car making random turn signal noises for the past month. Mechanics are now replacing ignition cylinder and switch to the tune of $600. Wish I would've read about this problem online to try other solutions first.
I would like to get a replacement, discount or free service on my 1997 Malibu. I've had my car since 2004 and had to get another motor in 2005 which is needed now . This car has put me down a lot not only problems with the motor but the ignition locked up and I had to replace that as well as the brakes and rotors that last about 2 or 3 months. I also have a problem with the lights not working properly they only work on high beam. I can't find a more reasonable mechanic that's willing to repair the motor that I currently have due to the type which is a 2. 4 and a used motor cost about half the price of a new one. Please help!.

Passlock ii theft deterrent system not allowing car to start and sometimes shutting the engine off while driving. The problem started around 70,000 miles with the theft light once in awhile coming on and blinking on the dashboard and not allowing the car to start, unless you waited 10 minutes with the ignition key in the "on" position until the theft light went off. Then around 80,000 miles "almost" every time you would try to start the car you would have to wait for the lights on the dash and the fuel pump to turn on before starting the car, which was most likely a result of the passlock ii resistors not registering in the ignition key tumbler. There was also a couple of times when the car completely shut off and once while trying to merge onto a major highway. After reading about how common the passlock ii problem was on some of the gm vehicles and how expensive it was to fix a problem that could possibly return anyway, we decided to just get another vehicle.
The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the engine light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the ignition needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 73,536 and the current mileage was 100,000.
Constant problems with the passlock system on my 2001 Chevrolet Malibu. Passlock engages constantly, causing me to wait 10 minutes for reset every time this occurs. This is a safety issue for my wife and daughter who must wait, in sometimes dark areas of town for passlock to reset before they can start the car and get safely on their way. Have had ignition replaced once but issue has not corrected.
I have been having repeated problems with my cars theft system defaulting and not allowing my car to start randomly on several occasions, this problem has been reoccurring for about the past 4-5 years. There were no events leading up to this failure, it just happend. It occurs almost daily and is a huge inconvenience. I have taken the vechile to several gm dealerships and have been told its the passlock, bcm, car not reading the key, and several other issues. I have been told they could not duplicate the problm as well but wanted to charge me over 900 dollars for fix something they think it could be as well. I can place the key in the on setting in the ignition for anywhere from 15-30 minutes plus sometimes and this eventually works, but it a huge inconvenience. I have been stranded several times due to this same issue as well.

Car leased brand new in August 2004. As of today on une 28,2007 car had brakes repaired 4 times at the dealer. Rotors have been machined each time, and today brake pads replaced. . Car has 27,180 miles on it, and it has been maintained, garaged, kept, and no one has been rough on the brakes. The last time we had the car to dealer for brake problems was July of last year. At that time we were told that a brake line was crimped and only found it because we were having tires rotated. Also, told that this was the last time rotors could be machined. Well today they machined them once again as I had said previously for the fourth time. I did some research ,and I may be wrong but there was a recall on the car for abs problems in April 2004 prior to our purchase of the car. . I called gm , and was told that our car was involved, but was later told by owner of dealership that there had been a communication error and our car was involved in another recall concerning seat belts or something along those lines. I am very concerned about the safety of the brakes at this point after so many conflicting stories. . I feel very frustated, and had to spend almost $500. 00 because the brake pads were not covered under the bumper to bumper warranty as they had nothing to do with the previous rotor/brakeline problems or so I was told. . We had computor sensor problems, short sockets on both real turn signals, loose tie rod, ignition problems ,which they could not detect. . Faulty gas cap etc.

I am the owner of a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu with just over 50,000 miles use. Over the past 6 months the car has exhibited a failure to start. A little research shows that this is the result of a common failure of the gm passlock system. The temporary fix is to reset the system by turning the ignition key to the on position and waiting 10-15 minutes. Needless to say, this is very annoying and inconvenient. At this point it doesn't represent an immediate safety issue, in that the ignition system isn't shutting down while the vehicle is moving. However, I am concerned that the inability to move the vehicle does represent a safety issue. My stepson uses this car to travel to work and to college. I don't want to have to worry about his safety if he can't start the car in an emergency situation, e. G. , to avoid criminal activity. If this were a small thing to have repaired, I wouldn't complain so much, but my mechanic tells me it will cost nearly $500. As I said above, this problem is quite common--or so my internet research tells me. Gm should recall this poorly designed mechanism. Thank you. --ted kriner.
The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu. When attempting to start the vehicle, the ignition failed to turn over. After being involved in a crash, the air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed and the driver suffered knee injuries. The vehicle was repaired by a local technician. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
From day one when I purchased my vehicle 2006 chevy Malibu every now and then when you turn the key to start the car it does nothing then let up and turn the ignition again and it starts fine there is no ryme or rythm it just does it whenever also the cd player ejects the cd saying check cd it does this alot in the summer when it gets real hot outside making it hard to listen to a cd I have had chevy look at it several times with nothing getting resolved I was told that since its not acting up at the time when they look at it then they cant diagnose the peoblem.

: the contact stated while turning the ignition, the vehicle continued to crank. The vehicle must be turned off. The vehicle was inspected by the dealership, but a remedy was unavailable.
The contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact was informed by another motorist that her brake lights were not functioning. The contact replaced the brake lights herself. The failure occurred at least five times a year. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that a mechanism within the brake lights needed to be replaced; the vehicle was repaired but the failure continued. Additionally, the contact stated that she experienced difficulty starting the vehicle. When she turned the key in the ignition, it took approximately 15 minutes for the vehicle to start. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired for the problem. The contact also noticed that fuel would spill out of the tank when the vehicle was being fueled. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000 and the current mileage was approximately 114,000.
2003 chevy Malibu has defective ignition lock cylinder. My car has 49000 miles on it and this is the second time the ignition lock cylinder has kept me stranded. This time I was in a somewhat dangerous area, and had no phone or way to get to one. When car was under warranty the dealer replaced the cylinder and now they want a couple of hundred bucks to do it again.
Luckily I have not had any accidents with my 2000 chevy Malibu. One of the most common problems with this make and model of vehicle is that the ignition lock cylinder and ignition lock switch malfunctions. This causes the car to not want to start, and while driving, the car will stop in the middle of the road. I personally have been stranded in the middle of intersections because of this problem. This is very unsafe, and very expensive to fix. I took my car into the chevy dealer to have it looked at, and it cost me $553. 55 to fix this one problem, and now my lights do not want to work.
Key is not released from ignition unless shift lever is put again back in drive and then park after car is off. Gm has replaced both ignition components and shift components but has not solved the problem since car was new, Malibu 2004 lt, and it means sometimes having to leave car with key in ignition if can't remove it.
I first purchased the vehicle in March 2005. After a month I started having difficulties with starting it. I would turn the key in the ignition and nothing would happen there would be no power, I would turn the key again and there would be power but the info station would reset. I have a friend who drove it sometimes and the same thing would occur for him. We took it back to the dealership it was purchased from three different times, they couldn't locate the problem but would reset the computers to factory, one time they installed an update. It would stop for a few months and then start back up. A year after purchase I found a different dealership(2006), they said it was the headlight and replaced it, they also updated and reset the computer. It stopped for several months and then restarted. Then one day the cd player wouldn't quit working, it showed I needed to eject cd but there was no cd to eject, it would whir constantly. Then one morning last fall(2007) there was absolutely no power, we got it jump started and took it to the dealership, they discovered something with an ignition connection being plastic instead of metal. They replaced the entire steering column under a goodwill warranty. Now my vehicle is doing the same thing, you turn the key and there is no power, the second time there is power, but the info station is reset. We took it to the dealership and we are over the 12000 warranty miles on the new part, so there is no goodwill warranty on this one and it will cost around $600 and that it probably isn't the same part anyway. This is the same problem I have had from day one of owning this vehicle. I have had it in and out of dealerships who couldn't truly discover the problem. I don't think that I should have to pay to fix something that I have been trying to get fixed from day one. I would think that if it was something different there would be different problems than always losing power.

The key to my 2000 Malibu will not turn. It started "acting up"only when the car had been running for a while. It know has gotten to the point of everytime the car is turned on. The key is also able to be removed while the car is on. I am in the process to try to replace it, however I can not buy just the cylander I was told I need to replace the whole switch. I have two small children and need to have a car start, and can not "play" with the key for 5 to 10 minutes until it will turn. While I was talking to the dealership, he commented that there have been several people complaining about the key not turning.
Number one complaint. 2004 Malibu is having problems with intermittenly not starting. Purchased the car with 6000+ miles. The problem started right after purchase. Dealer can't find anything wrong. Was told to drive it until it becomes frequent problem. Last episode was on 12/8/04. Also have had warning come up on regarding the powers teering, took to dealer. They had to "reprogram the car". Haven't had that problem since. Very concerned over the issue of car not starting. Worried it my quit running while driving, and cause accident.
First two occurrences I would be completely stopped at traffic light and my Malibu would go completely dead. No warning lights on the dash would light up. The third occurrence my husband was backing out of the parking lot at home and the car went dead again. Also, at times when turning the key in the ignition the car would take 3 times to start. The first time the engine would just click like the engine wasn't turning over so to speak, then the other attempts of trying to turn the car on it would just make this god awful noise like it was trying to start but nothing would happen. I am currently filing the florida lemon law on this vehicle.
Consumer was unable to start the ignition. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
Ignition lock failed! we can't turn the key to start car! tumblers must have frozen!.
After putting the key in the ignition, it became stuck and was not able to be released right away. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealership several times, but the mechanic could not resolve the problem. When the power steer locked up, the consumer had trouble turning the wheel. Steering column and steering position sensor replacedcw. Pe04031_cat.
While traveling on the highway and without prior warning vehicle will shut down, and will not restart.
Ignition failed. Key would not turn in the ignition. Missed work!!! began to work again several hours later.
When the gas tank was full the gas gauge read empty and when the gas tank was empty the gas gauge read full. The steering wheel made noises, the a/c light did not stay on and the a/c blew hot air when the button was not activated, the key would come out of the ignition and would not stay in and the vehicle would still drive without the key in the ignition. The brakes would have to be replaced at least twice a year, the antenna did not pick up an adequate number of stations, (case efficiency decreased from 350 to 250 to refill the can), when two batteries were replaced, the gas gauge did not work, and condensation would set in the rear lights and burned them out.
