2 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 04/20/2020

In 2019, my vehicle's tail lights, blinkers, headlights, & interior lights went out. I began to receive dashboard notifications from my car about traction control in early 2018 and earlier this year I started receiving notifications of problems with my airbags. I bought new bulbs, but that didn't solve my lighting problems. I took my car to a chevy dealership and was charged/paid a large sum of money to be told I needed a new fuse panel and headlight bulbs. I was told the panel wasn't available due to a strike at the plant & to come back later to have the panel installed. I returned later to be told that the tech didn't record his findings on my profile so no one knew what was wrong with my vehicle and was asked to pay out more money. Therefore, I took my vehicle to a different dealership and it was documented that my vehicle required a substantial amount of wiring which includes, but not limited to, body control module (bcm), body harness, a new fuse block, labor, etc. , the price tag is in the thousands. I conducted online research and learned of recalls on my vehicle. I contacted Chevrolet and was told there was no recall on my particular VIN although there is a recall on the year, make and model of my car and there was nothing Chevrolet could do to assist me. However, for every single issue I am experiencing with my car there is a recall for it. I am unable to drive my financed vehicle due to safety hazards and the possibility of being ticketed by the police or worse. I received notice for one recall after purchasing my car and that was for a seat belt. From my understanding 13036 is the bcm chevy recall number. Please let me know if more information is needed.

3 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 10/07/2019

I was having an issue with my third brake light at first it would go on an off then somedays not work at all. In order for my vehicle to pass texas inspection it needs to work all the time. I went to the dealership today because there was a recall but the recall didn't not cover the repair because it was a faulty circuit board in the tail light itself the recall covered the bcm. I've seen alot of complaints about this issue that I had. It's a very expressive repair about $640. I would assume since it's a safety issue it should be recalled as well.

4 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 04/11/2019

I purchased the car March 14, 2019 from a family member. The front passenger low beam headlight was not working. The prior owner stated they had taken the car in to have the light repaired at least 6 times in since 2009. April 2, 2019 I took the car to clint newell Chevrolet to have the low beam headlight fixed. The problem was the wire that plugs into the light was melted. The repair cost was $172. 33. On April 4, 2019 the rear passenger turn signal quit working. I replaced the bulb. April 9, 2019 the passenger tail light quit working. April 11, 2019 I replaced the bulb. As soon as that was done the front passenger low beam headlight quit working again. I checked the low beam fuse and it was fine. I cannot afford 172. 00 again 9 days later for this repair. I have also found online in chevy forums, this seems to be a problem for many people that own Chevrolet Malibus.

5 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 03/10/2019

In 2012, we were driving along and attempted to back into a parking spot, when the car refused to reverse. It started going slower than the usual speed limit, so I didn't know what to do. I pulled out to head home, but the car didn't get much speed, nor would it reverse at all. I had it towed and the transmission was burned out. I'd only had the car less than 30,000 miles. Chevrolet repaired or rebuilt the transmission. A year later, I was pulled over due to the tail lights not working. 2016 the car wouldn't pick up speed again. I had it towed and the transmission had burned out again. We got it rebuilt a second time and now the lights, wipers, door locks, and windows aren't working again either. Obviously there's a manufacturer issue that needs reviewing on this year Malibu.

Failure Date: 06/12/2015

Takata recall. Steering locked up while driving going around a corner and took a few minutes to get it to unlock. Happened to my wife with our son in the car. This happened before we got the recall. Got the recall fixed and now the power steering warning light is coming on. Headlight are constantly blowing bulbs. The headlight will go out so I will go to replace the build and then it comes back on. Front right turn signal goes out a lot and if I tap on it then it comes back on. The same with the rear tail light goes out often. This summer the traction control would ding and the button would not turn it on or off. When did this happen question doesn't make sense. It is a on going events.

17 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 08/27/2013

As I was driving the driver behind me told me that there was something wrong with my tail lights. I then noticed while driving that the brake lights stayed on and when I did press down on the brakes there was nothing. This poses a great problem in that I could have been rear ended due to the drivers behind be me not knowing if I was braking or not. This needs to be recalled. My family owns 3 chevy's, but I am unhappy with the problems I am having with this Malibu. This may be our last chevy purchase.

Failure Date: 02/12/2013

When it rains the tail lights fill up with water and the lights do not work correctly. And sometimes they do not work at all. It holds water and the lights flash in a christmas tree light manner. Also when the breaks are stepped on the blinkers do not work. Also when you step on the break the blinker indicators on the instrument panel remain lit up green. I have replace bulbs as well as the whole light housing. Even drilled wholes in the bottom of the light housing units so the water can drained. Nothing can remedy this problem it is very dangerous.

24 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 08/21/2009

The car had an issue with the syatem setting a code to check transaction and esc and the brake lights would stick on. This happened about once every 2 or 3 months. Now that the gm recall has been done it is setting these same codes 2 or 3 times a day. But instead of my brake lights being on, the brake lights don't work, my cruise control doesn't work, my tail lights don't work the car still says service transaction and esc daily. This recall has made my problem much worse. It is dangerous to drive as I never know if my tail lights and brake lights are working or if my antilocks or stabilization systems work. Gm needs to find a different solution to this problem.

28 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 10/19/2008

Although there has not been an accident yet, due to the design of the cars headlights, and tail lights, (and the removal of the side repeater lamp for turn signal indication on the 2009 model year Malibu), there is no visible turn indicator for other drivers to see indication of a signal from the car unless other drivers are directly in front of, or behind the car. For example, if a driver is sitting at a 4 way stop, or likewise, because the turn signal does not wrap around the front or back of the car, drivers to the left, and right of the car, cannot see the turn signal, which poses a safety hazard. On the 2008 Malibu, there was a side marker repeater lamp on the front quarter panel, and it was removed from the 2009 my. I feel that this is a large safety concern, and they should be put back onto the cars, or a redesign of the headlamp assy.

29 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 04/05/2007

4-2007 gas was pooling around engine, replaced intake gasket, next time I drove car , same problem, they had to do over ( their dime) because failed to replace o-ring. 9-06-07 would not start at gas station, 9-13-07 pass lock sys. Installed ignition switch lock cylinder. 11-13-09 turn signals, tail lights not working, between 11-13-09 @ 4-07-2010 , I have been back several times, because signals failed off and on while driving. Told me, they could not do anything until they could see it fail, which it did on 4-07-2010 while I was close to shop. Flasher switch/relay bad, replaced. 6-10-10 harmonic balancer worn and serpentine belt & seal replaced. 2-23-12 water pump leaking, replaced. 6-14-12 replaced sparks plugs, wires, complete injection flush. 9-14-2012 strong fuel smell (fumes) inside car and under hood, performed fuel leak test, no visual signs of fuel leak. Checked vent canister, gas cap, no fuel codes. Have been fumes several times since but by the time I drove to shop could not smell fumes. 4-22-13 fumes very strong inside car and under hood, drove to shop and they could smell fumes , put it up on rack and checked all underneath, no sign of leak under car or under hood. No one can tell me what the problem is but say process of elimination is only way. Why on 6-10-2010 need to replace serpentine belt and seal and again on 2-08-2013 remove and replace serpentine belt and belt tensioner?? when this car reached 62,000 I have had nothing but trouble with it and now I am afraid of a fire, gas is leaking somewhere!!!! I only have 97,461 miles. Is not there some way or someone who can find origin of the fuel leak?.

30 Tail Light Switch problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 12/01/2004

Tail lights work intermittently. Consumer states that she came very close to several accidents because she did not know the lights were out until someone blew the horn. She had the tail lights replaced three times.

31 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 01/01/2001

I have replaced my tail light bulbs numerous times as well now the entire bulb panel once on each side. The design and the seal allows for water to enter and hold water in the covering/reflectors which in turn cause rusting and blown bulbs. At this point I now need a whole new wiring harness due to the water damage on the passenger side as well as another new bulb panel. I have many friends whom also have the same cars who can not keep tail lights working either. I notice as I drive around many, many others on the road have no visible lights I would have to guess for the same reason. I am pulled over by the police frequently for this as well. I have not been issued a citation yet as I have a spoiler , rear window, and both break lights that are working. This is definitely a design problem and have been told this by many mechanics over the years. This should be corrected to potentially reduce accidents due to lack of rear lights and owners not knowing they have gone out or being unable to repair. The seals are poor and hold bowls of water constantly in the covers. I often see the problem in the passenger side as well as mine. Unsure if this in common or just my observation.

32 Tail Light Switch problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 05/01/1999

Repeatedly have to replace tail light bulbs because tail lights fill with water every storm or when washed until they finally burn out. Mechanic says he sees this problem over and over with Malibu's. Any recalls on this problem?.
