1 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 04/07/2019

My car is a 2003 Monte Carlo, if I try to use the directional signals they make a buzzing sound and then the brake light and the air bag light comes on along with the battery light, no signal works, the hazard lights work , I replaced the hazard switch but that didnt solve it . Batter is fine and the alternator I had them checked there is no relay for the directionals its all in one . Something is strange going on I also noticed sometimes when your driving the those three lights will start coming on as well . I had put up the windows and they all went on too , sometimes just when driving it or even stopped had this car since it was brand new never had a problem till a few weeks ago.

2 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 09/24/2015

On September 24, 2015, my wife was driving our Monte Carlo. Unbeknown to her the car began smoking underneath, causing loss of control with neither steering nor braking capability. Other drivers, noticing the smoke, were attempting to notify her of the impending fire. She was able to drive about another mile before losing control and crashing into a tree on my neighbor's yard. The car became completely engulfed in flames and was destroyed. Were it not for several good samaritans, and police and fire personnel, she would have been killed. The following is a history of issues with this car, documented fully by service records from its purchase in 1998. 1. Brake lights working intermittently or not at all. 2. Turn signal failure. 3. Unable to start due to short in electrical system. 4. Wheel hub assembly replaced. 5. Power steering pump replaced. 6. Rear suspension (passenger's side) broken. 7. Premature alternator failure. 8. Premature brake replacement, I. E. , pads, calipers, rotors. 9. Total brake failure from hard braking (incident not connected with fire) 10. Intake manifold gasket replaced due to coolant flowing into cylinders and crankcase. 11. Premature radiator replacement. 12. Electrical spike distributed through system when starting, causing full-scale deflection of instrumentation and lights to become extremely bright.

3 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 05/22/2015

So when we went to start the car, the car would not start we replaced the battery then we replaced the alternator. After looking some stuff up online we realized that it was neither of these things it was actually the passlock security. It is now locked us out and we cannot get the car started unless we go and have a whole new ignition tumbler keys and I believe it is the bcm reprogrammed. This is obviously a malfunction in the car and I don't believe that I should have to pay $300 for a malfunction I don't know if you all can help me but anything at this point in time would be helpful.

4 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 11/10/2014

Had to charge battery so I could take car in for ignition recall. Since I dont use the car much anymore. Upon trying to start vehicle, engine backfired and upper intake manifold exploded and pieces all over the driveway. This is the same issue as described in the 2004 recall which was performed on the fuel pressure regulator. Since the recall. I did have to replace the fuel pressure regulator again around 2011. I also had replaced the upper and lower intake gaskets that were faulty oem parts. The upper plastic manifold was replaced to the newer design. Although it being plastic is just an engineering catastrophe stil doesnt solve the problem with warping from heat. Anyway. Heres my diagnosis. Fuel injectors continued to spray fuel into engine after the first attemp of starting vehicle caused by a weak battery. I say this because after turning the key off after the first attemp I heard the fuel pumping for at least 10 seconds. This is not normal. After 1 minute I tried to restart and thats when parts started flying. Good thing no helpers had their heads under the hood when this happened.

6 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 04/20/2009

I own a 2005 Monte Carlo, at around 50,000 miles began to have problems with instrument cluster. The fuel gauge and the alternator gauge failed. I have also had problems with the windshield wipers not returning to the set position, I do see that there has been service bulletins issued to for this. The instrument cluster has not been addressed by chevy and I have read many other complaints about this failure from other owners. The fix for this is to replace the entire instrument cluster, this is running between $450 and $650. I think this is a defect that chevy needs to replace free of charge.

7 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 01/11/2006

Owned since new 2002 Monte Carlo. This vehicle is on the 3rd ignition switch. The latest just this year. Each time, it has effected a different part of the electrical system. The cruise control, the radio, the security system. There is an o-ring in the fuel line under the hood that was faulty, causing fuel to leak in the engine compartment. The power window regulator has been replace twice on the drivers door, once on the passenger door. There has been an antifreeze leak, causing the engine to overheat. The fan cooling assembly has been replace. The door window button has been replaced 5 times. The light bulb continued to burn out each time. The steering assembly column has been replaced, and continues to make a clunking sound. When it was recalled, they replaced it at the dealer and my high beam function has never worked since that repair. The catalytic converter went out right after the emissions warranty expired, within a few thousand miles. Current mileage is just over 120,000 miles. That is 40,000 miles per ignition switch. This ignition switch recall currently by gm should have included the Monte Carlo.

10 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 08/21/2004

While driving my car home one evening it was idling high and and everything electrical was acting like it was short circuting and then my car died. Thank goodness that no one was behind me because of course the power steering the failed and there was a sound of metal against metal. My father and I then changed the alternator thinking that that might fix the problem. It didn't and the car has had the problem multiple times. Now I am unable to drive it for the fear of this happening in heavy traffic or out in the middle of no where and me be stuck there. The problem is not a faulty alternator so I would like to know if you have any clue as to what the problem might be.

12 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 10/03/2003

Gm new car and pre-owned buyer beware. I purchased a 1999 Monte Carlo in August 2001 from Monday Chevrolet in houston, texas. They installed a new battery before I completed the purchase. I assumed that the 6-yr warranty on the battery was in force. Obviously, acdelco has a problem with the "positive post" on their batteries corroding and causing the post to separate from the battery. There are many customers chatting about this problem on the web. This is what happened to the battery in my car. It appears from the position that acdelco and gm take on warranties that I have never owned the battery and never had a warranty on the battery. In fact, as they explain their position, the proper thing for a customer purchasing a new gm vehicle or a pre-owned gm vehicle that has a new acdelco battery in it, is for the purchaser to ask the dealership to take out the oe battery, reduce the vehicle price in that amount, and install an acdelco battery that the vehicle purchaser buys from the dealership. That way the battery warranty is in the name of the purchaser and not gm or the dealership. Because on a new vehicle after 3 years, there is no warranty on a 6-yr warranty battery. Or on a pre-owned, there is no warranty after 6 months or 1-yr (depends on number of months you get from dealership for the entire vehicle)on a 6-yr warranty battery. There must be some way for the government or a regulatory agency to police this problem and force the vehicle manufacturer to issue the battery warranty in the name of the purchaser at the time of sale. Also to look into a recall of acdelco batteries. As I explained above and the acdelco representative agreed to, that there would be no cost difference if a purchaser did the "proper thing" that I explained above. Needlessly to say, I am upset that I would have to purchase a replacement battery for a 6-yr warranted battery that obviously has a factory defect and should be on recall.

14 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 06/07/2003

Brake pads need to be replaced every 3 to 6 months. Rotors were cut and then new rotors replaced. I live in a rural area not bumper-to-bumper, city traffic. I also do not ride my brakes. There seems to be a major defect in the Monte Carlo brake system. I just had to have a new alternator replaced on my 1999 Monte Carlo. I am very unsatisfied and will definitely not buy another gm product.

15 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 09/18/2002

Consumer states of having problems with the alternator, battery keep on dying, then car wouldn't star. Vehicle also had problems with pcm which was repair and the vehicle still has problems. Dealer was notified and vehicle was repair by a independent repair shop. Nlm.

16 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 08/18/2001

Was traveling down the road when the "volts" light came on. I read the owner's manual and it said to turn off all electronics such as radio, air conditioning etc. And not to drive the vehicle. I was able to get it to a goodyear retailer who provided mechanical service. They tested the alternator and said that it was not putting out any amperage. They also said that this is a factory defective design since the alternator is located next to the engine and the heat from the engine eventually causes the diodes within the alternator to go bad. He also said that this is commonly seen around 60,000 miles on these vehicles. I am extremely disappointed with this because it could have left me stranded on the side of the road with little warning. This is not a "maintenance" item that should go bad within 3 years and there is no way to protect yourself (such as a maintenance check) if it happens. I had a Toyota for 11 years and only replaced the alternator once after 150,000 miles. No alternator should go bad this quickly.

18 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 09/05/2000

First, the a/c went out. As I was driving the car in for maintenance, suddenly, while driving, all the power went out. Fortunately, no other cars were on the road, and I was not traveling very fast. My car began to slow, but I was able to turn into a parking lot. As I pulled into a space, I tried to step on my brakes, but they didn't work. It turns out that my alternator was out, so I didn't have any power. But it seems to me there should be a back-up system for the brakes, so that they would still work in this situation (or in a more dangerous situation, e. G. , if I had been on the highway). The parking brake is a back-up of sorts, but, really, I don't believe the brakes should fail when the power goes out.

19 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 08/23/2000

Premature altenator failure, caused by altenator being positioned under car , which causes it to be out of a "cooling air flow" and to overheat/burn up,internally. Plus, due to it's location, the right front axle, and sub frame have to be removed to replace the altenator. Altenators should not fail at this mileage. I have spoken with several other 96-z-34 owners who have had the same problems. Clearly a bad design by gm, and it passes an unneeded/unwanted burden on to people who buy their products and hope them to be trouble free,. Modern technology should allow them to build a system that is more durable. I have two other vehicles, that are much older than this car that are much more reliable and less costly to maintain. This poorest / and most unreliable of Monte Carlo now has a reputation in the market place and the resale value has plummmented. There should be some liability on gm's part.

20 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 01/05/2000

Engine check light always coming on, burned up O2 sensor, vaccum line broke controlling vents, charcoal canister cracked, transmission slips if pedal is floored from takeoff between rst and 2nd and when downshifting after braking, abs fail in wet conditons resulting is extended stopping distance, alternator defective at 63,000 miles, vehicle skids and low trac light comes on when braking frequently.

21 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 11/15/1999

Problem has always been rough idle or not starting. In the case of the fuel pump engine check light was not on and we were told there could not be anything wrong. Broke down on way home. Had spark plug wires/ altenator and. Fuelpump replaced. Sparkplugs have only been cleaned.

22 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 09/02/1999

Problem 1--an iginition wire shorted out within a year of purchase and was replaced under warranty. At that time, dealership service informed me there was a technical bulletin on this part but dealership could only replace one wire at time. Within three weeks, another wire shorted out. This time the entire set of iginition wires were replaced under warranty. At 38500 miles another iginition wire from the new set shorted out and was replaced. Two weeks later, at 38900 miles another iginition wire is shorted out. Dealership now claims there are no technical bulletins on this part---especially since the warranty is out. Iginition wires are not available after market. Problem 2. Alternator burned up at 38775 miles. I was informed that since it was placed on the bottom side of the engine when this vehicle was designer, it is common for this part to burn out due to excessive heat. It would seem this was intentionally designed this way.

23 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 08/09/1999

Appears design flaw in the location of alternator causing failure?.

24 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 07/28/1999

I took my car to bob mcdorman Chevrolet in January (vehicle was still under warranty) about several concerns I had. One concern I pointed out was that my car "cranked" a long time to start. I also had them repair my driver seat belt, that would not contract, had them check my brakes because they were taking longer to stop on wet pavement and they were squeaking. Well, needless to say, nothing was found to be wrong with anything except my seat belt. I also reported that there was a ticking sound in the morning when I started the car. They told me some ticking is normal on a cold start. On 03-29-99 I took the vehicle in because the "service engine soon" light kept flashing and staying on, the idle was very rough, car was missing terribly, sulfur smell was present. Bob mcdorman Chevrolet replaced three plugs and wires. I took my car back on 4-14-99 because the car was "running rough" again. Bob mcdorman Chevrolet replaced the other three spark plugs and wires. On July 26, 1999 I was driving on the freeway @ approximately 65mph. I lost all power and my car would not restart. I called chevy on 07-27-99. I was told to take the car into a dealer and they "may" assist with reimbursement but could not guarantee it. I called several Chevrolet dealers but could not get my car in for a week. Bob mcdorman was called and I spoke with the service manager (steve alexander). He told me that they couldnot go back on the warranty because this was a new problem. I explained to him that my car was running rough all along like before in "spurts" and I felt the warranty should cover what I had it in for before. To make a long story short, I took my car to a garage, they said it was the alternater ($453. 16). Now, in the beginning of September, my car misses after it is started and still idling rough. Took it back to the garage and was told it is now my fuel pump. I contacted.

25 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 07/28/1999

I have had this car since November of 1998. When I bought the car, I took it to the dealer I bought it from because the brakes "felt funny" and there was a constant "squeaking" when brakes were applied. Also stopping distances were increased with wet pavement. They reported that my rotors were warped. They resurfaced the rotors. I then went back because the brakes were still "not right" . They could not find a problem and I then went to bob mcdorman Chevrolet. They could not find a problem either.

26 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 02/15/1999

Ball joint and tie rod + front brakes replaced at 1st alternator - parts corroded and fused together 75k on orignial tires.

27 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 03/11/1998

Fourth alternator in 18 months. Repairs were under warranty, but something is wrong here. The dealership blames the failure on light wieght, less durable components used to make the alternators. However, they acknowledge that this is not a common failure for Monte Carlos. They say that I have just had a string a "back luck with alternators".

28 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 03/07/1998

The alternator failed. Yh.

29 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 02/01/1998

Alternater has been replaced 3 times. Defective alternater would not allow engine to cool. Consumer stated alternator is located at the bottom of the engine, because of its location it does not cool properly, to get the part the engine must be dropped, consumer stated this was a poor design.

30 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 01/23/1998

Plug wire replaced at 35k 50k 71k - last two caused alternator to be replaced.

31 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 05/01/1997

Vehicle has had continued engine failure due to spark plug alternator and battery failure.

32 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

This car has had electrical problems since it was new. It has been in for repeat repairs since under warranty. Now that the warranty is over, gm has taken the position that they will not help in the repairs of this car. What happen to applied warranties on repairs to cars. They are refusing to take responsibilits with this cars failures. I was informed by a dealers service manager, that gm knows about the placement of the car's alternator on the engine and it caused so many problems that gm has since relocated the alternator on later models and that seems to correct the problem with having to replace the alternator. In November 1999, I paid to have a pcm replaced and the technician forgot to replace the no knock module in the pcm. This caused the cars service engine soon light to come on and the car had to be taken back for repair again. This mistake caused me to go out and buy another car. (Toyota).

33 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Vehicle supposedly has 100,000 mile spark plugs installed, but spark plug cables failed below 60,000 miles. Contacted Chevrolet and they told me it was because how I had them routed, and I had never moved or touched them since I had bought the car new. I was really upset with their explanation, or "excuse". And to have an alternator go bad at 76,000 miles, I don't think so.

34 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Vehicle has trouble starting.
