The rear window defogger no longer worked. The reason being that the rear defroster wiring had burned at the connector block. Connector block is located behind the passengers side kick panel. This could have caused a fire to the interior of the vehicle. There are videos on the internet showing how to resolve this problem so it must happen frequently! you can see where the burn occured in the attached photo. I repaired this on 3/9/2018, however, it happened at least two years ago.

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The contact stated that the traction control warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who inspected the vehicle. The failure was located at the tail light assembly wires. The tail light wiring was wired incorrectly and caused the brake light and the traction control to fail. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 123,401. Updated 6/6/12
the consumer believed during assembly at the gm factory, the tail light/stop light wiring was improperly routed. On the left side, the wiring harness was wrapped around a mounting bolt and the right side, the wires were pinched between the sheet metal of the vehicle's body and the housing of the tail light assembly. Over time, the insulation on the wires became worn and caused a short and loss of brake light function. Updated 06/11/12.

I have had consistent problems with the abs on this vehicle. I have had it diagnosed at Chevrolet dealers and independent dealers in va. I have replaced all wheel hub/bearing assemblies. That is not the problem. The problem is with the abs wheel sensor wiring harnesses. It is obvious if you go online and research this issue there is no way that Chevrolet is not aware and the many models of vehicles that are affected. I contacted Chevrolet and they have no desire to attempt to help with repairing this safety issue that is well known by dealers, mechanics and consumers. There are currently no TSB's or recalls for this issue. Thanks.

The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. When the contact started the vehicle, he noticed a warning message indicating service traction system and abs failure. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. The technician flashed the computer system to clear the code. The vehicle has not been repaired and the failure persists. The contact researched the failure and was able to determine that the wheel sensor on each wheel, ground, control system, or a faulty wiring harness could be causing the failure. The contact is in the process of taking the vehicle to the dealer and notifying the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 140,000 and current mileage was 153,000.

Speedometer started registering incorrect speed, then worked sporadically and sometimes not at all. Car was taken to the dealership to have it looked at. They determined that the whole instrument panel console needed to be replaced (not just the speedometer). The dealership sent the old instrument panel to the parts supplier and received a new instrument panel, then installed it. They speculated that it might have been because of a bad ground in the system. Unsure whether or not old part is available.
The contact stated the automatic headlights will shut off while driving. When he manually turned on the headlights they will stay on. The vehicle has not been inspected to determine the cause of the problem. He believed it may have been a problem in the electrical system relay for the headlights. Updated 12/27/05.

Exposed wiring to the starter motor can be easily contacted when changing the oil filter with a metal type wrench. This situation causes a short between the starter motor wiring and the wrench. A cover for the starter motor wiring harness would prevent this from happening. Both personal injury and mechanical damage to the vehicle are potential problems to anyone performing routine maintenance to these vehicles.
