Brake Disc problems of the 1996 Chevrolet S10

Three problems related to brake disc have been reported for the 1996 Chevrolet S10. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 11/10/1998

Found outer brake pads worn down to metal during routine tire rotation, at 21500 highway miles, with no prior warning. Dealer says I was lucky as he has received many similar complaints at much lower mileage. Dealer says this is due to removal of asbestos from pad material and gm undersizing the rotors. In addition, the wear indicators are located on the inner pads which wear at a much slower rate, as in my case. The underdesign of this brake system is a safety hazard and gm's responsibility. Gm needs to be made to conduct a recall to replace calipers, rotors and pads with a safe design before someone gets killed!.

2 Brake Disc problem

When driving under wet conditions and brakes are applied the rear brakes lock up immediately. The front brakes vibrate violently and make a loud sound under the hood. Dealer has been conatacted.

3 Brake Disc problem

When applying the brakes during wet road conditions the vehicle takes longer to stop than when it is dry. The brake system makes a loud noise and the pedal goes to the floor. It has been checked out at the dealer and they cannot seem to find anything wrong. The tires are on a different vehicle but 1 tire the tread came off during highway operation. During inspection we found 2 other tires with loose tread and ready to peel off. We had them replaced. The tires had slightly less than 10,000 miles on them with a great amount of tread left.
