Chevrolet S10 owners have reported 59 problems related to automatic transmission (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact owns a 1996 Chevrolet s-10. While driving approximately 70 mph the vehicle stopped accelerating and the rear wheels locked up. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where he was informed that the transmission locked. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 99,000.

No accident took place but the transmission in two separate 2000 model s-10 and an s-10 blazer have gone out in the same exact manner within 3,000 miles of each other and both vehicles were primarily driven in two different parts of the country. The slipping of these trannys is so sudden that it actually almost became a safety concern while on the highway. I apologize if this is being sent to the wrong dept. But I would like to find out if chevy has had any recalls on these models as well. Thanks!.

Transmission shifting very hard into second gear. Now transmission does not shift into second at all and there is no reverse. Apparently this problem with the 4l60e transmission is very common.

In 2003 with 17600 miles the reaction sun shell broke in my 2002 chevy S10 pickup. It was repaired under warranty. On January 27 2007 with 56000 miles the same failure occurred. The truck has not been repaired and the part is still in the truck.

Transmission shifts hard from 1st to 2nd and displays code 1780, ever since 50 k miles. Had local transmission shop make the tfb change gm recommended and problem reappeared after 15k. I am sure I be told that now with 130k miles out of warranty, still if happened way back. Additionally the transmission fluid has been changed ever 15k and is driven in light highway conditions. : the contact stated while attempting to back up the vehicle would not shift into reverse. This happened without warning. The vehicle was driven to the dealer where the transmission was replaced.
When you drive the truck for approx 1 hour, the transmission goes into high gear and will not come out until it cool down. It throws a cel lamp. When you stop with the transmission warm, it shifts very hard from 1st to second.
For 2 weeks the truck felt like it was hesitating somewhat when accelerating. Then when driving home on dry pavement one night, a pop sound was heard & second gear was gone. From a dead stop, rpm's go up to 4000 or 4500 before it down shifts into 3rd gear. There is also no reverse gear. Chevy says it is the "sun gear" that blew. Truck has 78000 miles on it. You either rebuild it for $1600 with a new sun gear, or replace the tranny for $2600.

A check engine soon service light on the dash board came on. I had it checked and found out the code was 1870, a transmission code. I called several transmission shops and they all stated that the problem is generally the aluminum valve body has worn and needs to have a steel sleeve repair kit installed. It cost me $265. I believe this is a design flaw and should be looked into. Just call any of the transmission shops and see how many of the valve bodies have been replaced on the 1999 chevy s-10. Mine is an automatic with a 4 cylinder engine.

Transmission front seal blew out at speed on free-way. Dumping fluid. Transmission needed to be rebuilt with only 59000 miles on it.
I own an 1998 chevy S10 pick-up truck. Some time last year I started to get a p1870 trouble code. When I took it to the dealer I was told that my transmission needed to be replaced at the cost of $2,300. At the time the transmission only had 61,000 miles on it. I researched the problem and found that this is a big problem with these transmissions. I believe that gm should take responsibility for this faulty transmission.
Sunshell in transmission broken twice within 2 years, repair shop states heavy duty sunshell has been released to replace the inferior sunshell that was designed for the 1997 Chevrolet s-10 pickup. Repair shop states this is a common problem. Repairs each time totalling in excess of $2,000. 00. Purchused vehicle from father at 13,000 miles. He had problems with transmission at 10,000 miles. Serviced by love chevolet on Dec. 1, 1998.

This is pathetic. . . I have a 1999 chevy s-10 e-cab 4cyl automatic. Pulled out of the driveway, and the truck started to shake something fierce. The transmission went out. . . I only have 3 gears and can't go above 40mph before I have nothing. The truck only has 64000 miles on it. . . And of course the extended warranty I bought is out. . . Thanks gm. Seems this is all to common from all the mechanics I've talked to on this type of vehicle. Now I'm looking at a minimum of $1200, and that's only because it's a friend of a friend. How can they not make a vehicle these days that doesn't last 100,000 miles? guess they figured it out in japan. . . Here in America they think about the almighty bottom dollar. . . Not giving the cusumer a great car to buy. . . At least one that lasts.
1998 chevy S10 4 cyl. 74,000 miles transmission shifting hard, check engine light comes on and has code 1870. Shop says transmission needs to be replaced. Ran across hundreds and hundreds of this same complaint on the internet.
Tranmission is not shifting from first to second, unless you go very slow.
Got the truck at 48,400 miles. At 48,800 after driving at highway speed continuouly for about 25 minutes, my truck shifted very hard between first and second gear. The problem could be duplicated like clockwork. Talked to both the local Chevrolet dealer and Chevrolet and neither would budge on assisting on the repair bill which came out to be $710. After reading about more complaint of the same nature on this and many more sites, I can't understand how Chevrolet can get away with passing this cost on to the consumer. It's obvious there is a design flaw.
I recently purchased a used 2000 chevy s-10 with 48,000 miles. The vehicle is extra clean and there were no apparent problems. I had to make a trip from atlanta, GA to chicago, IL. Coming back on the interstate (traveling 75-80 miles an hour), the check engine light came on and the truck downshifted from overdrive into third. I was nearly rear ended by two 18-wheelers while I tried to slow the vehicle so that the rpm's were not in the critical zone. I stopped at the first auto repair shop I could find, and was told that the transmission was severely damaged and would need to be rebuilt. Apparently, the bands were slipping and caused the fluid to overheat and turn extremely dark. The truck now has 58,000 miles, and needs a new transmission. This is the third gm car that I have had that I have had to have major transmission work done. The last one was a Buick and had less than 60,000 miles on it.
We purchased a 2000 chevy s-10 in July 2002. Immediately, the "check engine" light would come on during drives of more than 20 minutes. We had transmission work done in the fall. By December 2002, on a 4-hour trip home for christmas, the transmission blew out. We put in a brand new transmission on, but the same problems occur. If we drive more than 20 minutes, the light will come on and we will have hard shifts. Parking the truck and letting it cool fixes the hard shift. But for 4 years we have owned a truck that we cannot drive for more than 20 miles. We have been back to the transmission shop, to no avail. The problem doesn't seem to be the transmission, itself.
The vehicle was in park with the engine running, when all of a sudden the vehicle rolled backwards. . Consumer was injured when he tried to get back in the vehicle to stop it.
While accelerating transmission will lock up, and will grab rear wheel. Cause unknown. Dealer notified.
Vehicle stopped on interstate rt. 81 nearest exit altmar, NY. Transmission ceased.
Bought truck in October and have recently been experiencing extremely hard shifting from first into second gear. This is also accompanied by the service engine soon light. I spoke with a transmission specialist about this and he said it is a very common problem with these gm transmissions, he suggested replacing the valve body which he said is clearly defective from the factory in my opinion gm should issue a recall on these transmissions. ****dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12-12-02 cut over to artemis****760962.
I have had truck in shop 3 times for transmission/dealer cant duplicate/also the third door has been repaired twice/popping sound when making a sharp turn/main concern.
Transmission was replaced but problem was not fixed. Brakes were replaced but problem was not fixed.
Due to the huge number of similar problems and complaints, clearly a problem exists, that the manufacturer refuses to acknowledge. No safety defect listed.
While traveling at 70 mph, vehicle started to down shift and the driver came to a stop, once going up a hill the vehicle started to lose power, driver pressed gas pedal, and there was no response, then suddenly vehicle took off. . Consumer stated when she stopped to make a turn, the vehicle would not move up the hill, and the accelerator pedal was to the floor, once the vehicle was put into low gear it moved.
Engine rpm's went to 5500 rpm's, vehicle did not go faster, just the motor. When cruise control was turned off, the vehicle coasted to the side of the road, as if the transmission had went to neutral, pushing on the gas pedal did not help.
Transmission experienced hard shifts between 1st and 2nd gears. Also, engine service and check lights would come on intermittently. Dealer informed consumer that transmission body needed to be replaced for second time. Please feel free to provide any further details on this matter.
Missing insulation caused very loud grinding noise when stopped with vehicle in gear.
Reverse does not always engage when it is shifted from park to reverse.

Transmission has a shifting problem. Consumer will fill in additional information.
At 40824amiles the car could not shift out of first geer and the service engine soon came on. I called the auto shop and they said to bring it in and that I could drive it until the light flashed. I took it in and had it repaired (which I have fought for the 200. 00 deductable) at the time I questioned the fact that a transmission could go out so fast. ( I do not tow anything-it is a work car and take the kids to sports) two months to the day, I am having the exact problem with the car. Everyone I talk with that has a 97 chevy blazer has a transmission problem.
Our transmission repair man said that '97, '98, '99 chevy S10 have a common problem of the transmission tearing up at 60k miles. We would like a recall on this. We did not have an accident, although this could cause an accident.
