1 Transmission Failure problem of the 2001 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 06/14/2006

Transmission in my 2001 S10 Chevrolet 4wd p/u failed as I was driving behind a school bus. . . Children were let off and as I tried to accelerate, the transmission failed without warning and the vehicle behind me almost hit me from behind. . I pulled over to let vehicles pass and put myself in a position where I had to back up first to get back on the road. . I put my truck in reverse and couldn't move at all. . I found that I had 1st and third gear but no 2nd fourth or reverse. . The transmission had no prior symptoms of anything being wrong. . When I took this vehicle to a dealer. . . I explained the situation and the mechanic knew exactly what had happened. . He stated that sun shell had broke inside the transmission. . He then showed my several other broken sun shells he had to replace in other vehicles and how poorly they were manufactured and that gm had replacement parts made of a higher standard that was suitable for the application. . . He estimated the repair bill to be approximately 1600 dollars!!!hoping that there wasn't any other damage to driving further with this broken part. . . My question is this. . . If gm knows these parts a faulty and notified their mechanics to replace them with a part that they know will hold up to the task, why should the consumer be subject to a 1600 dollar or better repair bill, and why isn't there a recall on this??. . The mechanic stated that he was surprised mine lasted as long as it did saying he saw this transmission part fail with as little as 35000 miles on them. . . I appreciate any help on this matter as I yet have to decide whether to have this repair done or not. . I am really surprised at a company such as gm would knowingly sell vehicles with inadequate parts, and hope they outlast their warranties so the consumer would be stuck paying the bill to have their mechanics rebuild their faulty transmissions to satisfactory standards. . . . . Thanks for your time concerning this matter. . . . . . . . . . . . Tom.

2 Transmission Failure problem of the 2000 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 05/09/2005

We own a 2000 s-10 zr2. The original transmission had 42,000 miles (6000 miles out of warranty) when it failed. The 2nd transmission failed 1 year later as it only had 22,000 miles on it. We are now spending $2600. 00 on a 3rd transmission and drivetrain problem. Gm/Chevrolet refused to help us when we called in may of 2004. They claim since it was out of warranty they couldn't help. We didn't bother calling them again. . . . Please help us re-coup.

3 Transmission Failure problem of the 1997 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 02/12/2005

Around the end of the warranty period, my truck started shifting into "second" gear hard after driving at highway speeds. Toward the end of a 200 mile trip, the transmission failed and no longer has a "second" gear. The truck had 48,023 miles on it. I cannot determine for sure if the overdrive function is working, either. While failure did not cause an accident or personal injury, the potential was significant. This vehicle has only been used for personal transportation, not commercial purposes or hauling heavy loads. Repairs will be costly. My research indicates repeat failures for this transmission. I am the second owner. I bought the truck from my mother after my father passed away.

6 Transmission Failure problem of the 1999 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 07/01/2001

Wife was driving the vehicle and transmission failed without warning (disengaged and lost power). This happened on a busy highway and nearly caused an accident and fatalities. This happened on a 2 year old vehicle with 70,000 miles that had been serviced regularly.

7 Transmission Failure problem of the 2000 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 06/15/2001

Reverse lockout mechanism is non-functional. Dealer indicated it is a design defect and is not repairable. Safety problem because transmission can accidently be put into reverse at highway speeds (70 mph ) causing complete transmission failure and loss of vehicle control. Reverse is on same leg as 5th gear overdrive. Emergency passing requires rapid down shifting to 4th gear or 3rd gear. I have used a 5th to 3rd gear emergency passing method since discovering the defect. The problem with 5th to 3rd is that 1st gear can accidently be selected. That will cause engine failure or loss of vehicle control. I would have pressed this issue with Chevrolet further but have not because it is a leased vehicle and is scheduled to be returned Jan 2003. I still do consider it a significant safety issue and owners should be made aware of the resulting dangers of this design defect. Dt.

8 Transmission Failure problem of the 1996 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 04/24/2001

We do not believe that the power train automatic transmission should have failed at 58788 miles. The vehicle is not used for off road, heavy hauling, or for any other purpose than normal city/highway driving. We paid $1987. 74 for a new automatic transmission and want to know if other Chevrolet S10 blazer owners have had similar problems at low mileage. We would also like to know if any factory/dealer recalls were out there that as an owner we were not notified. We have learned that other S10 blazer owners have experienced auto transmission failure but have no specifics on mileage or circumstances surrounding failure. Please reply at earliest opportunity. Thank you for any help/information you can provide.

12 Transmission Failure problem of the 1996 Chevrolet S10

Failure Date: 05/14/2000

The day the transmission failed. We were traveling on the interstate going 70 mph when the truck made a funny sound and then it just locked up . The truck almost swerved off the road before I got control of it. Luckily no one was hurt but it could have been much worse. We would like to know why we were never made aware of the recall on this problem so we could of had this fixed. This problem would of been remied a long time ago and we wouldn't be in this position. We should of been told about this problem so we could of had an opportunity to get this fixed. This could of caused serious injury or possible death. I find this totally disbelievable and now we can't seem to get this matter cleared up. We seem to be getting doors closed in our faces.
