Chevrolet S10 owners have reported 10 problems related to differential unit (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
During 41,000 service observed rear pinion seal leaking, after 3 attempts to get the correct seal, finally found the correct one. Parts stores only show 3 different seals for a 2001 s-10 pickup w/ 4. 3l engine and automatic transmission. Had to go to 2003 s-10 pickup to find the correct seal.

Had driveline howl/vibration since vehicle has been new between 45-70mph. Dealer has put in 2 new rear axle assemblies and have not been able to fix problem. Third time I brought vehicle into dealer for same problem the said noise was normal for the 03 model year s-10 pickups. I put on new rims and tires to see if that could be the cause, problem still there. I now have 18,000 miles and noise and vibration is getting worse and worse and vehicle is currently at another dealer to whom I did not purchase the vehicle from to fix the problem but they can't find anything wrong.

Initial complaint started at approx 17,100 miles. There was water reported in the rear end differential. Dealer (lucas Chevrolet) refused to repair under warranty and to give suggestions on how water got into sealed unit. We paid to have the fluid changed and dealer assured that there was no damage to rear end differential. Second complaint was that there was a whining noise coming from the rear end at approximately 20,000 miles. The noise occured between 50 & 70 mph and would quit when the gas pedal was let off. A different dealer (jim reed Chevrolet) "rebuilt" the rear end differential. Note: dealer was very helpful in fixing problem. The next complaint was that at approximately 23,000 miles, after the rear end differential fluid was changed, the whining noise came back. The driving conditions were the same as the second complaint. The dealer (jim reed Chevrolet) again "rebuilt" the rear end differential. On the way home from the dealer (jim reed Chevrolet) the rear end is still whining.

At 54,190 miles a rear differential leak caused a problem with the rear of the vehicle and rogers replaced it. At 105,000 the rear end was replaced again! the dealership was not helpful and would not help me with the wiper motor problem.
Consumer was going 5mph and rear wheels locked up. Vehicle came to a screaching halt in middle of intersection. Dealer found a factory flaw had been installed in rear end differential. Inside of diferential was replaced, but wasn't able to find stress point. They refused to inspect up & down the line.

The rear differential unit has gone out on me twice. Now. I was wondering if there have been other reported problems with s-10 pickups?.
