Brake Fluid Leak problems of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

11 problems related to brake fluid leak have been reported for the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2014

On Saturday 12/13 my wife was driving our 2001 chevy Silverado. While hitting the brakes for a stop sign, the brake pedal went to the floor and she ran through the stop sign as the vehicle could not be stopped in time. Fortunately there was no accident. This occurred about a mile from our home and when she arrived home, she was extremely upset. I checked the vehicle and the brake fluid was low and I found the fluid was leaking out of the hydraulic brake line under the vehicle. I checked and learned there was no recall for this dangerous defect. With the amount of these vehicles on the road, this is extremely dangerous as there is absolutely no warning and the stopping power is almost non-existent. This is a very low mileage vehicle that is kept in excellent condition. Please have these vehicles looked at by the manufacturer or there is serious risk of life threatening crashes.

2 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2014

My wife was backing up the truck to give me me and my stuck four wheeler a tow and just barely got the truck to stop. I jumped in to move it and the brakes went to the floor,no warning lights. I then noticed it was leaking brake fluid on the driveway.

3 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2013

Brake lines rusted through causing the brake fluid to leak out, losing my brakes. I had to replace all of my brake lines.

4 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2012

Failure of vehicle to stop appropriately, brakes were squishy, braking distance increased. Pulled vehicle into driveway and found the brake fluid reservoir was empty. Filled reservoir with fluid, within 5 days reservoir was empty, inspected vehicle and found brake fluid dripping from the steel brake lines. All lines are corroded, took vehicle to shop and found that all brake lines are bad, gm no longer manufactures the brake lines.

5 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2012

I was backing out of my driveway pressed the brake pedal which went all the way to the floor. I pumped the pedal softly, came to a stop and pulled back up to my house without incident. Opened the hood and noticed the brake reservoir was very low, but no leaks around the master cylinder. I looked under the truck and noticed a large puddle of brake fluid under the drivers door. The brake lines { 4 in a plastic clamp on the frame} were all wet and rusted. A line or lines had ruptured under just normal braking and very luckily in my driveway. The rupture seems to be a line inside the plastic clamp mounted to the frame of the truck.

6 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 04/28/2012

Was driving home in my occasional-use 2001 chevy Silverado. Brakes became very soft, so I drove extremely slow. Finally lost brakes completely upon pulling back into home driveway. Hydraulic fluid leak was evident at a rusted-through brake line, between brake distribution module and rear axle. Entire brake line system needs immediate replacement. The amount of corrosion that has appeared on the brake lines is actually pretty frightening. It's hard to believe entire families are driving around NY and new england with these rusted out brake systems. Bought the truck as a used vehicle in 2009, and the under-frame looked acceptable at the time. A warm adirondack winter seems to have left us with a lot of saltwater on the roads, which seemed to cause worse than normal corrosion. I can understand an eleven year old new england truck being rusty - but the brake lines should never corrode - and yet, the brake lines seem to be the rustiest part on this gm truck. There needs to be higher standards for brake lines. Cheap, uncoated steel is unacceptable with modern, safe engineering standards.

7 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2012

The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado. The contact stated that he noticed brake fluid leaking from the vehicle and onto the ground. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who stated that the sub frame and brake lines were corroded. The mechanic attempted to put the vehicle on the lift but and as the lift began to rise, the vehicle began to crack. The vehicle was not repairable. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 211,409.

8 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2010

I own a 2001 chevy Silverado 1500 4wd. I am the original owner and have garaged the vehicle from the beginning. Today my wife was driving the truck and all of a sudden she applied the brake and it depressed to the floor with minimal stopping power. Fortunately she was able to get it home. Upon inspection, under the driver's side of the vehicle where the bed meets the cab, there was brake fluid leaking from a line. It appears the line is corroded and after looking more closely, it seems there is rust throughout the brake lines. Fortunately, this didn't occur at highway speeds which could have had a catastrophic outcome. I am now stuck with a vehicle that is inoperable and needs immediate repair. I will be calling my local dealer in order to determine my options.

9 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2010

Driving down my driveway ready to take a heavy load of shingles to the dump, the brake pedal went almost to the floor. Barely could stop from 5 mph. Upon inspection brake fluid was dripping down the frame rail under the drivers seat location. All of the five break lines running down along the top of the frame rail were corroded to the point one failed.

10 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2010

Sudden loss of brakes on 2001 chevy Silverado 1500. Thankfully happened in the driveway and not on the road. All brake lines were badly rusted, fluid was leaking from a group of lines to the hcu. Removed all rusted brake lines and brake components.

11 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 05/04/2010

I lost the brakes on my 2001 chevy Silverado, when leaving my home. Once I was finally able to stop the truck, all of the brake fluid leaking out. When the mechanic inspected it they said all the brake lines were corroded & badly rusted that both the front & the back brake lines had to be replaced. They, of course, no longer make the brake lines for this truck so they had to be hand made. Very expensive. Luckily this happened in the driveway. On the road or highway it could have been tragic.
