Chevrolet Silverado owners have reported 92 problems related to abs brake fail (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
In (always and only) very cold weather warning messages appear on the dashboard warning of traction control/abs failure. On a snow covered road the rear axel sent power to the wheel with the least traction and the truck started sliding backwards. Abs brakes fail to work as anti-lock. This failure occurs whenever the temperature is below 25 degrees. The failure occurs at any speed and is preceded with difficulty shifting out of park. Note: I did a google search on this issue and found it has been occurring for several years across general motors brand vehicles.

On my way home from work at about 11:30 am on Tuesday July 28, 2009, I stopped at a light. The truck came to a complete stop and suddenly I felt the abs kick in. The truck went forward, without my taking my foot off of the brake, into the intersection. It finally came to a stop in the middle of the intersection. A car had to serve to avoid hitting me. I called the dealership and they said there are no recalls on my 2002 chevy Silverado truck. There was one on the 1999 Silverado for abs failure.

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado. While driving 20 mph, the abs failed to stop the vehicle. The contact almost struck a child. After finally stopping the vehicle, he took it to the dealer and they stated that the brake sensors failed. The dealer installed a temporary sensor to make sure that would remedy the failure. The manufacturer stated that they were not responsible for the repairs. He found a recall for the failure, but it did not include his model year. The contact believes that the design was never changed and the newer models have also been affected by this defect. The vehicle has not yet been permanently repaired. The

The abs failed in my truck, causing me to hit a trailer parked in my driveway. While gm has already "repaired" this under a previous recall, their "repair" obviously doesn't work. They were unresponsive about my complaint, since my truck had already been "repaired". If someone would have been walking in front of my truck when the brakes failed, I would have killed them. It is one thing to have the radio quit working, it is an entirely different thing to have the brakes totally fail. Gm needs to do something about this besides cleaning a couple sensors. There were no warning lights, no indication whatsoever of the impending failure. I backed up and the brakes worked fine. Still no warning lights. I spoke with the dealership and their answer was "there isn't anything we can test for this intermittent problem. We can try to get it to fail and go from there". I now have a 6000 lb projectile that I have no idea if it is going to stop or not. I removed the abs fuse until I can figure out what to do with this unreliable product.
There was a recall on my chevy truck for the abs system. After the service my abs system failed and the light remains on that it is not functioning. I called gm and they said that it was not part of the recall. . I have driven only 1700 miles since this service was done. I believe this problem should be taken care of by gm.
Abs system failure. Vehicle has 38000 miles. Had to disconnect fuse. Web search indicates this is a common problem with this vehicle/model. Gm has not done a recall on this safety issue. I originally reported braking failures to dealer years ago that vehicle would lose brakes if you hit rough road or pot holes while attempting to stop. Got typical run-around.
Abs module failure - abs light came on, pump would not shut off had to disconnect battery. Seemed to be effecting brake function. 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2wd.

The contact received NHTSA recall letter 05v379000 concerning abs brake failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealership for repairs. Upon leaving the dealership experienced the same abs brake problems as those prior to the repairs. The dealership then drove the vehicle and could not duplicate the problem. General motors told him if the dealership could not duplicate the problem then there was nothing they could do. The vehicle was taken to another service station, and they told him the problem was still with the abs. Updated 11/29/2005 -.
The contact received recall 05v379000 concrning abs brake failure. The recall repairs was performed on October 24, 2005. The vehicle was not drivable. When she tried to use the brakes they did not stop the vehicle. When she pushed the brake pedal it pushesd back up on her foot. She contacted gm's customer service, and they stated she will have to pay $75 to test the vehicle. If it turned out the problem was not with the abs she will have to pay for the repairs.
My 2002 Chevrolet Silverado truck has started experiencing symptoms of low-speed abs brake failures.
The abs module failed on my 1999 Silverado pickup. Only 65,000 miles. Repair is very costly at $1000. 00.
Abs sensors have failed on front wheels causing abs to engage each time the vehicle slows to a stop. Stopping is unpredictable. One crash was narrowly avoided when the front brakes did lock up at the last second. Appointment has been scheduled to replace both front hubs at my cost.
Abs brakes fail at low speeds, making it impossible to stop. Took it to the dealer (2-20-2006) with a recall relating to the abs brake system, and was told the recall didn't cover the problem with the truck. I was told if I had $1,100 to replace the ebcm motor relay circuit, that would solve the problem. I have found with only minimal research, there's a lot of folks out there with the same truck, or similar trucks having the same problem. This is an extremely dangerous situation in heavy traffic, the truck will not stop!! I have had to remove the abs fuse, and completely disable the abs system, in order to make this vehicle safe to drive.
The contact owned a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado. The consumer was involved in a collision due to abs brake failure. The consumer hit a brick wall. There was an open NHTSA investigation, pe05020. The consumer knew several other people with this same type of brake problem . This will cost him $900 dollars for repairs, and he did not have the money to pay that much for parts and repairs. Therefore, he needed to be included in the investigation. The dealer said to either fix it or to pull the fuse out. This was the first time he had this problem, and he just got a recall notice for the parking brake today.
Dt: consumer stated the abs sensor went gone out twice on his vehicle. The first time the abs failed (41,219 miles) the vehicle struck another vehicle while pulling into a parking space. The second time the abs failed (60,675 miles) the consumer hit a small steel pole. During normal braking procedures, when the brakes are applied the vehicle pulsates and there is extended stopping distance. There were no warning lights or noises letting the consumer know there was a problem. The first time the mechanic replaced one front hub with the abs brake sensor. The second time both hubs and abs sensors were replaced.
2002 Chevrolet Silverado z71. The anti lock brakes are not working correctly, when the consumer pushed on the brake pedal the vehicle continues to move, the consumer almost hit another vehicle. The consumer had to put the vehicle into park to stop it. The consumer took the vehicle to a garage, and the mechanic ran a diagnostic test on the vehicle, the test came out negative. The brakes failed without warning. The abs light comes on when the vehicle starts up, but it fails to come on when the abs brakes fail. This is the only problem with the vehicle. This problem has occurred multiple times. The vehicle is no longer under warranty.
The contact stated while trying to stop vehicle he pressed the brake pedal and it did not engage. There was no warning prior to the incident. There was NHTSA recall 05v379000 concerning abs brake failure. Updated 2/7/2006 - the consumer stated that the brake pedal seemed to push back as it was applied and that the truck felt as if it were on ice. This incident occurred on an off ramp on a clear dry day. Updated 2/7/2006 -.
The problem began about a month when coming to a stop sign, and after applying brakes extended stopping distance was required, and brakes shuddered. Vehicle was regularly serviced. The abs light did not come on. Happened in all driving conditions under normal braking conditions. Owner believed they were 4 wheel anti lock brakes. The problem is intermittent, happening about every other time the brakes are applied at slow speeds. At about 5 mph. Dealer stated that the abs sensors were dirty, and had to be cleaned. Owner replaced the brakes at 30,000 miles, and brakes began to cause problems after the installation of new brakes. Abs sensors failed and was not covered in warranty. Rear rotors replaced at 30,000 miles when being replaced chunks of metal fell off dealer said consumer was lucky to get 30,000 miles out of them.
The consumer stated the abs failed. The abs kicked in when it was not needed at low speeds. No warning lights illuminated. The vehicle has not been to a service dealer yet. The consumer was waiting to see what happens with the investigation of the abs system.
(hydraulic brakes) when the brakes were applied, the abs kicked in and the vehicle continued on. No warning given about the abs failure. The problem continued to get worse. The problem would also occur on dry road conditions with normal braking. This was an intermittent problem. Per invoice; the abs brakes would activate at slow speeds. The sensors had corroded.
Abs system failed at 5 mph, made noise, and truck would not stop at 5 mph. Had to hit brake hard to stop the truck.
The contact stated this vehicle was included in NHTSA recall 05v379000 concerning abs brake failure. Recall repairs was done on the vehicle, but it did not correct the problem. There was pulsation in the brake pedal when the brakes were applied. The dealer removed the abs fuse to keep the abs from activating. The dealer said he will have to cover the cost of the diagnostic test to determine the cause of the problem.
When coming to a stop the abs light did not warn the consumer that the brakes were not operative. When the consumer took the vehicle to be inspected, it was determined that the abs module had failed.
This concerns the brake problem on gm trucks. My 2002 Silverado's braking never was great, when hard braking is applied, the pedal will bottom out and you have to pump pedal to stop. Now the abs system has failed and the pedal has locked up on me at least four times, nearly causing accidents. I had to pull abs fuse just to be able to drive it and be able to stop. The pedal would lock up so hard that I had to stomped it to break it free.
The contact states there is NHTSA recall campaign 05v379000 concerning the anti lock brakes. This vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall, but is not included in the recall due to VIN. The contact repaired the vehicle at his own expense. The abs failed at low speed. Updated 01/04/06.
Abs pump failed. Have no anti-lock brakes. Had to pull fuse to stop pump from running. Will not replace at $1,800.
Ltr. Request a mandatory recall for the abs sensor malfunction on a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado truck, abs sensor fails due to a design problem. The consumer stated the front rotors were out of round at 50,000 miles due to the use of inferior reprocessed steel.
Upon pulling into driveway consumer applied the brakes and the pedal began bucking. Consumer was not able to stop the vehicle, and it collided with parked vehicle. Abs warning light failed to warn consumer that a problem occurred. The problem was caused by rust developing on abs sensors. The problem was more prevalent while driving between 5 to 10 mph.
The abs failed, and the vehicle went into a chain link fence. The consumer contacted the manufacturer, and they won't return calls. However, dealership fixed the problem, and told consumer that this problem only occurred at slow speeds. The brake system failed while the consumer was parking. Gm would not cover the damages to the consumers vehicle.
Abs failing at low speeds. During braking, below 10mph the brake pedal locks up and fails completely. Before it fails the brake pedal will chatter. Abs fuse has been pulled in order to drive vehicle.
Both front abs sensors failed at 25,690 miles. Abs would energize at low speed on dry pavement.
The contact received a NHTSA recall letter campaign 05v379000 concerning the anti lock brakes. The recall work was performed. However, the dealership informed him that this vehicle experienced a failure with the abs and once the sensors corroded. The contact refused to drive the vehicle because he was afraid that the same abs failure would occur at any time. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no additional assistance. When the consumer attempted to stop the vehicle, the abs activated and subsequently the consumer hit a building. The consumer stated he felt responsible for the accident until he received the recall notice in the mail. Updated 01/11/06.
