1999 Silverado z71 pickup abs control module failed. Chevrolet servicer joked that when they see one come in they don't even have to look at the vehicle to diagnose it because it is so common. He even stated that with the cost of the repair that it appears that Chevrolet discovered a way to increase new vehicle sales. Then he said maybe I should talk to a salesman while they make the repair. This is dangerous and certainly is no joking matter. Researched and it is very obvious that this is not just an occasional problem. Considering a vehicle costs $30k & the danger I think Chevrolet should do a recall.
Abs control module failed abs motor runs continously even after turning the vehicle off.
The abs sensor failure resulted in service brakes failing to stop the vehicle immediately. The consumer had to depress the brake pedal several times to stop the vehicle. The brake pedal was hard when this occurred. The problem was also present while being repaired.

Abs system failure, 65,000 miles "motor module" failed and replaced, 75,000 rest of system failed and was replaced. As a standard equipment item, this is very disheartening and worrisome. It is also expensive, as I am $1700+ out of pocket for a repairs. "it happens" does not seem a good explanation for why this has happened. No loss of control or accident occurred. The repairs were made as soon as they were identified and could be scheduled.
1. Power window passenger door: operates slowly and if it gets too warm will quit. After 30 seconds will continue slowly 2. Other - cd player: plays tract 1 then skips & ejects cd (laser out of line) 3. Abs system has failed - automatic brake control module has to be replaced. This is a common problem for the '99 siverado. (the local auto wrecker won't even sell a used one unless there are less than 40000 km. This should say something!) I feel this should be a recall.
When driving at variuos speeds and when applying the brakes abs pump failed, causing extended stopping distance.
Dt:
contact states that abs started failing at approximately 37000. The vehicle was taken to lewis Chevrolet, they would not warrant the work that was performed on the vehicle.

Abs module failed causing the abs pump to run contantly. There should be a safety recall issued to repair this safety issue due to loss of anti-lock braking.
Apparent abs failure. I am the original owner 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4wd pickup. Several times during the last four years (at least 5 distinct times I recall), the abs seemed to fail. All the incidents occurred when I was attempting to stop rapidly on a rough/bumpy road. The symptoms are the same each time: after starting to brake normally, the brake pedal drops a bit and there is a grinding noise for a few moments (a second or two at most) along with some significant resistance to the pressure of my foot on the pedal, then the resistance and the grinding disappear, and I lose the power brakes. If I lift my foot off the pedal and press down again, the power brakes are restored. The last time this happened (April 6), I nearly rear-ended someone at a stop light. I have complained of this problem to multiple dealer mechanics, but they have all stated that this is the normal way for abs to work. After the last incident, I removed the abs fuse.
On 03/29/03 the abs system failed on my 1999 Silverado truck. After turning off the ignition I could still hear the abs motor continuing to run. I had to pull the 60 amp fuse to keep from running the battery down. I looked at this site and notice several other 1999 Silverado owners with the same problem. The prospect of shelling out $1000 to fix a vehicle with less than 50,000 miles will definitely make me reconsider my loyalty to gm products.
On many occasion the abs failed suddenly which caused extended stopping distance. It was later determined that the abs sensor was faulty.

The abs failed, which caused the brakes to engage when it was not needed.
Abs failed prematurely. Dealer notified. Whenever the consumer came to a stop, when approaching another vehicle at a stop light, the abs malfunctioned and caused the vehicle to drift into another vehicle in front.
2001 Chevrolete Silverado, abs brake failures intermittent abs slow speed failures, brake pedal goes to floor, no warning ligths come on before or after, no noise, vibration ,nothing to warn brakes are going to fail. Vehicle as been to dealer 11 times for repairs, they do all the usual inspections, read the computer, drive vechicle. Except for one ,they have never ckecked the maze of wires ,connections, and other componets that the abs runs through,or is useing. The gm. Shop manual gives step by step instrutions, how to check vechicle for intermittent abs failures. I have to drive vechicle with abs deactiveated, using hydraulic brakes which are excellent, I have not had any brake failures driving vechicle.
1999 chevy Silverado-abs system fails at slow speeds,or coming to a stop. Brakes release, pedel goes to floor causing the truck to continue forward.
Abs module failure abs module runs continuously and must be shut off at the fuse or it will run down battery. The part must be replaced as a dealer part (no aftermarket) at a cost of $1000 plus. Dealer indicated that failure is a systematic problem with the 1999 model. Has been corrected for 2000 model. This should be a recall item! dt.
Abs module failed at just over 43,000 miles. Dealer said this was common problem with '1999 Silverado. Contacted Chevrolet to question why recall has not been placed or if they are providing assistance with repair cost due to the failure on a newer, low mileage vehicle. Told by Chevrolet there was nothing they could do. Researched problem on internet and discovered this is a widespread problem for this truck. I feel as if Chevrolet should live up to the high standards they claim and take care of a problem of this nature.
This is a 1/2 ton series, brake complaint relates to abs brakes failing, losing power on a dry surface. Also abs runs when truck is off. Owner indicated that he had to pull a wire on the brake system. Consumer stated the abs module shorted out.
The ebcm of the abs shorted causing the electric pump motor to run continously. There are only two methods to discontinue its operation, one is to pull the 60 amp fuse under the hood, the other is to disconnect the connector at the module, under the drivers side door. Researching this problem on the internet, I have located an unbelievable amount of information on the 1999 Silverado abs failure. It appears to most common between 30k-60k miles. The manufacture has introduced a new part number for its replacement while contending there is no issue. The replcement cost is approximately $1000. , while the actual dealer purchase price for the part is $386. , it appears to create revenue. While there may be no safety issue related to this problem, I believe there is enough incidents to classify as a manufacture defect.
A near head-on collision was avoided by applying abs brakes. After incident abs pump would not turn off so consumer had to physically remove battery. Vehicle was checked by a dealer, who advised consumer that abs system had failed.
Abs pump failure, pump will remain on while vehicle ignition switch is turned off. Dealer and manufacturer were notified at this time.
The ebcm (electronic brake control module) failed, leaving me with no anit-lock brakes. I believe this is due to the fact that they mounted this electrical system underneath the truck (exposed to all elements) rather than underneath the hood. In fact, Chevrolet must believe the same thing, because they changed the design in 2000 (they now put this component underneath the hood). . Read more...
Abs motor failed, was told it would be $1300. To fix. Was able to remove fuse and continue driving without abs.
The contact owns a 1998 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and abs brakes were failing on dry pavement. Also, there was a bad wheel bearing.
Abs brakes operate poorly making it difficult to stop the vehicle. Abs module failed causing the abs pump continuously operate, component was disconnected causing the abs to be inoperative.
While driving 35 mph and applying the brake the abs system failed. Brakes locked up, and abs light came on. Dealer inspected vehicle, and determined abs system needed to be replaced.
When turning engine off abs motor continues to run. While applying brakes abs fails, and wheels loks up. Please add VIN.
Module controlling the abs brake system fails making the system inoperable. Braking system reverts to the standard braking system. My contacts with local garages indicates this is a common failure. Module replacement costs are in excess of $1,000. Been advised that most owners do not have it repaired.
Abs light stays on. Consumer lifted hood and noticed abs pump is running. Cause unknown. The abs control module failed due to loose or worn out seal, which the module was mounted. Consumer states that the abs control module is located under the truck and mounted to the frame, this was subject to water after the seal came loose, causing it to fail.
Abs module failed, motor continuely runs. Also caused battery to go dead along with the loss of abs protection.
Consumer stated the abs pump was running constantly and getting hot, causing abs to malfunction. The vehicle had complete abs failure.
I was informed by service personnel that they have seen several abs controller failures. This is an expensive($800+)part to replace and there should not be a high volume of failures. The abs system detected the failure before I started to drive. The nature of the failure permits the controller to continue to run even with the key turned off. It only stops when power is removed by crawling underneath the vehicle. If left running the module gets hot to the touch and eventualy runs down the battery.
When shutting off engine right away consumer heard a loud grinding noise. Called dealer, who stated that problem was abs module that failed, dealer stated it was a known problem on 1999 models.
While driving the abs brakes failed to operate, the pedal went to the floor and eventually it stopped the vehicle, the dealer turned all four rotors and serviced the calipers.
