Chevrolet Silverado owners have reported 109 problems related to brake abs warning light (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
In my 2000 chevy Silverado 4x4 truck, without warning the brake pedal went to the floor as I was pulling into my garage and the vehicle did not stop causing minor damage to garage contents (shelves, stored garden equipment; no damage to truck). My mechanic could find no problem after inspection. Brake failure occured twice more and then I went to the dealer mechanic. The abs error light never came on. I paid approximately $500 to replace driver side front abs sensor. This was in oct 2004 so the old part is not available.

Consumer stated that while driving and applying the brakes, he heard a humming noise. It sounded as if the abs was kicking in. This should not happen because there was no bad weather. The consumer stopped and turned the vehicle off and the noise was still there. After getting off work the noise was still there, but the vehicle would not start. Consumer got a CO-worker to jump start the vehicle. When raising the hood, the found the fuse for the abs and removed it. The noise then stopped. But when the consumer put the fuse back the noise started again and the abs illuminated light. The mechanic told the consumer that it was a mechanical design flaw common with these vehicles.
In the last month I've had my abs brakes on my 1999 Silverado engage at between 10 and 5 mph every time I stop. . On three different occasionsif there hadn't been a curb in front of me io would have been crosswise on a heavy traffic street twice and once I'd have gone into a business front. . . No abs light has been on in the vehicle. . I brought this up to the dealership and all they told me was that there was a service bulletin on this and no recall. . In my opinion this is a very serious problem on a nearly 30,000 dollar vehicle and also an 850 dollar option. . The parts alone are over 400 to 700 dollars. . . I checked several forums on the internet and this is a highly reported problem. . . My vehicles are kept in showroom condition and serviced well.
While driving at low speeds consumer heard a popping noise. Then, the abs light came on, and the brake pedal went to the floor. Consumer tried to turn the steering wheel to avoid hitting another vehicle, and the steering wheel locked up. Consumer's vehicle collided with the other vehicle, but no damage was sustained due to the low speed driving at time of impact. There was brake valve recall 04v045000, but this vehicle was not included due to VIN.

With only 52,000 miles on vehicle, the abs warning light comes on and stays on. I have been told by reputable service technician that the abs control module must be replaced at a cost of $690 for materials alone. I have also been advised the abs system is inoperable until this is corrected. I believe this is very premature for this type of problem to occur.
Abs warning light on dashboard.

The contact stated abs brakes kicked in at low speeds. The contact's vehicle was having the same problems as described in recall 05v379000. The contact stated the state of wisconsin was not included in the recall. He had it repaired about one year and half ago, in February 2004. They told him the hubs were corroded, and had to have the left hub assembly replaced. Now, he was having the same problem with the right hub assembly. Abs light did not come on. He started having the problems in November 2003.
Consumer has a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado. Consumer has concern over the abs brakes. When vehicle is coming to a stop the abs will cause the brake to pulsate. In order to stop consumer must let off brakes and apply again brakes. This deactivated abs, and allowed vehicle to stop. Consumer had vehicle repaired once, cost was about $600. This repair was on the left front of vehicle and took place in March of 2004. Consumer was going to take vehicle back to dealer. . Consumer first started having this problem in February of 2004. The abs light did not come on . When vehicle was under warranty consumer had warranty work done on brakes, replaced pads and rotors due to the fact that there was uneven wear on the rotor. Consumer heard of investigation or recall, after looking found investigation that sounds similar, pe05020 NHTSA action number. Each time this has happened it has been during dry conditions. Dealer in florida told him that there was a problem in the north with this happening due to corrosion. Dealer was a1automotive authorized chevy dealer.

3 month old 2004 silvarado 4x4 had, started displaying several error reports, ie service brakes, service 4wd unit, stereo console lights would get extremely bright then dim. Took truck to local dealer, power Chevrolet of tillamook or. Service mngr "bob heagal" stated that the problem was a faulty ignition swich, they replaced switch and truck continued to have same problems, a error code check showed hard coded errors in every module of truck, mechanics also had problems reading codes as equipment was not communicating with truck. 2nd round of diagnosis, service mngr said problem was with ecbm (electronic brake control module), they state they replaced the lower ecbm unit and were still receiveing error codes, mngr said that they are currently waiting for the upper unit to arrive, this was over two weeks ago.
Abs module failed without warning.
The abs light illuminated, and when turning the vehicle off, the abs pump continued to run. Also, there was a burning smell present while driving.
The abs light came on and remained on and the abs motor continued to run even when the engine was turned off. The vehicle was taken vehicle to three different dealerships, however the problem could not be determined.
The consumer noticed the abs pump would not shut off. This would cause the battery to run down. The vehicle was taken to the service station to have it checked. The mechanic could not determine the cause of the problem, and had not been able to resolve it. The abs light had come on, the engine shut off and the fuse had to be removed to disable the abs. The consumer requested that gm should cover the repairs due to the part being a safety feature.
Brakes pulsate when coming to a stop or over rough/bumpy roads. This has been happening since I owned the truck. Dealer informed it was normal. In the past two weeks I have been having a problem with the abs light occasionally staying on and during the first braking where the truck will not stop and the brakes chatter or pulsates but then will work fine for the rest of the day. Brake fluid is fine.
When driving over bumps abs light would come on.
1999 Chevrolet Silverado/27420 miles/ abs light came on/abs motor continues to run even when engine turned off/ seems like this is a safety issue, and also numerous incidents of this occuring/ is something going to be done to force Chevrolet to have a recall?.
Abs light intermittently illuminated while driving or when braking. Also, an ongoing problem with excessive wear of brake rotors and pads. They had to be turned or replaced.

The abs light came on while driving. When vehicle was shut off, the abs unit continued to run. Pulled the 60 amp fuse and the unit shut off. Continued to drive vehicle without the fuse. Been driving it this way for about a month. Brakes are now worn. Do not relish spending $1000+ to repair a 4 year old truck with low mileage!!.
While driving the abs light illuminated on the dash until the vehicle was shut off. .
Had prior issues regarding braking; now the abs light came/stays on and was advised by the gm service manager that I am stuck with the 995. 00 bill if I choose to have it repaired/replaced, otherwise I would have to live with it since "it is not a safety issue. " it seems that I am not the only one.
Just after the 36,000 mile warranty was up, the abs light illuminated and the pump motor runs continuously. Had to remove the fuse to stop it. Cost to replace is $900 plus, on a part that should last the life of the truck! friends purchased an identical truck to our, did the same thing at 38,000 miles.
The abs light illuminated, which caused loss of braking ability.
At 51,346 miles the abs motor stopped working, which caused the abs light to remain on. The abs motor would remain running, after the was turned off. The dealer had been notified, and vehicle was not covered under a recall. Ph the consumer requested a full reimbursement. Scc.
Driving to work, abs light came on, ran code check, c0265, c0267, c0281, and then told parts would be $850. Decided to expensive to fix and not worth it with the number of problems the state inspector had seen. Dt5.
My abs light came on when I started my car and I heard a winding out noise coming from beneath the area where the front passenger seat is. I immediatly called my mechanic and I brought my truck in to him. I have yet to have the problem diaganosed as of yet because of my time schedule. I am concerned because my father-in-laws truck (same make and model) had the same problem, the same week as ours.
The abs control valve and abs control module shorted out causing the abs warning light to illuminate on the instrument panel while driving. Water had entered both units, the pins of the control unit and sockets of the module unit were covered with rust, shorting the system, in some manner water entered through the control unit and caused the pins and sockets to rust resulting in premature failure.
Abs light on, abs motor keeps running after engine shut off, numerous units already replaced locally.
Abs system is not working properly, and that abs light came on and stayed on and after turning off vehicle. Consumer could still hear the motor of abs running. Contacted dealer.
Turned truck on this morning and abs light would not go off. Shut truck off and the abs "compressor" stays on. Contacted local Chevrolet dealer and they said that is a common problem - no recalls, no resolve except to replace unit for more than $400 + labor. Abs has always reacted unexpectedly on uneven roads(bumps or railroad tracks) and inconsistently on wet surfaces (sometimes grabbing the road, other times free wheeling).
While under warranty I complained to dealer that the anti-lock brakes were to sensitive and would engage while braking on the slightest bump, lenghtening the stopping distance. Of course they never can duplicate the problem. Now with 41000 miles, I start the truck and the abs light comes on. I get home and hear a noise from under the vehicle with the key off. I had to unplug the abs pump to shut it off. I called the dealer and they said this is a common problem and the cost of the unit alone is $780. After researching this I've found the number of this type of failures are astounding!! there is no excuse for this failure, abs has been around for over 15 years now. Gm knows there is a major problem with their abs braking system and should be made to recall & fix this problem before someone is killed!! anyone who has paid for this should be re-inbursed for their expense. This failure seems to happen around the 40,000 mile mark just after the warrany has expired.
While traveling on highway and without prior warning steering will turn to left, and the abs braking light appears on dashboard. Dealership is aware of problem.
When slamming on brakes to avoid an object in road vehicle went to the left into traffic. Consumer feels abs is not working properly because abs light has illuminated. Please provide any further information.
Approximately one week ago I began noticing problems on rough surfaces with my anti-lock brakes. Whenever the brakes were applied on a rough surface the anti-lock brakes actuated but didn't seem to be stopping the car. I attributed the problem to be simply a function of the rough surface combined with the rainy conditions at the time. Yesterday morning when I started my vehicle the abs light came on and I immediately noticed a loud clicking noise which continued even after turning off the ignition. I had to remove the 60 amp fuse for the brake system to stop the pump from actuating. I took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that the electronic module which operates the system had shorted out. This same problem has been experienced by 6 other people I work with here at eglin afb.
