2 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/16/2012

The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 20 mph with the brakes engaged, the vehicle decelerated to 10mph and the abs began to pulse. The brakes continue to be depressed until the vehicle came to a complete stop. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnose that the wheel speed sensor was corroded and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since recall NHTSA campaign id number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: antilock) was closed. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 126,000 and the current mileage was 127,000.

3 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/01/2011

Total brake failure. The cause of the failure was the failure of both lines from the master cylinder to the abs ehcu where they are unprotected from wheel spray adjacent to the wheel speed sensor anchor point just inboard and slightly aft of the left front wheel directly below the master cylinder. Upon inspection it was clear that the line closest to the left front wheel failed first and that the other line failed a split second later due to the burst pressure torque moment created by the first line failure. Up until may 14th the truck remained stationary in the driveway but is now undergoing total brake line replacement. During this task it has become evident that the lines have corroded to the point of failure in many places but the problem seems concentrated on the left side of the vehicle from the front bumper to the rear axle. The only line not in this area is the right front brake line which is in reasonable condition except where it passes along the left side to the abs ehcu. In many places the lines can be broken by hand using the action of breaking a stick by hand. In some cases this caused the line to break in multiple pieces. Any thoughts that this is anything but a material quality issue are senseless. This truck has been plagued with material quality issues, specifically rusting of metal. Parts that have been replaced are tail gate cables (recalled) window regulator cables, wheel speed sensor cleaning procedure due to rust ( even though this truck is not covered by the recall) front and rear brake rotors fell apart with sheets of metal delaminating from their surface and wheels have severe rust requiring their replacement. The fuel lines on the truck, bearing a few small spots, remain in like new condition as they run along the frame rail adjacent to the brake lines that are failing apart from corrosion.

4 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

The front wheel hubs and bearings, including wheel speed sensors, are failing on these pickups. This is, apparently, a known issue and gm refuses to do anything about it. Why not? this is a blatant safety issue.

5 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/19/2011

Antilock brakes kicking in at low speed, causing a near crash. There is a recall for speed sensors for 99-02 chevy Silverados, but when I call gm I am told that there are no outstanding recalls on my truck even though it is a 2001 Silverado.

6 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/07/2011

When coming to a stop the brakes operate properly until just under 10mph. Around 10mph it felt like the brakes faded away causing the truck to lurch forward. I replaced pads and rotors on the front and back thinking this was the issue. The problem persisted after installation of new brake components. I later learned this was an issue of the abs kicking and was informed the entire wheel hub assembly had to be replaced to correct the problem. There were no issues with the bearings in the hubs and could not afford the cost of $280 each. Since this vehicle is not driven daily I assumed I could just be cautious and allow extra braking distance to compensate for the problem. In may of 2012 I encountered a situation where I had to make an abrupt stop from a speed of 45mph. As my speed decreased the abs engaged causing me to lurch forward and I came within inches of crashing into the vehicle in front of me. While researching this problem I found gm recall #05068c front wheel speed sensor corrosion. The symptoms in this document are identical to the issue I have experienced. I have performed the repair procedure outlined in the document and can report this issue has been resolved. However, it took a significant amount of time and one wheel speed sensor had to be replaced. Gm should be required to extend this recall beyond the 2002 model year. I aware of at least 2 other gm truck owners (2005 model year) that have replaced their wheel hubs due to this issue.

7 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/12/2010

Abs activates at low speeds. Dealer states nothing can be done to permanently resolve the issue. Nov 2009 (13000 miles)had the speed sensor replaced. Oct 2010 front brakes replaces(22000 miles) now December 2010 with 24000 miles happening again.

8 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/10/2010

The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado. He stated that while driving at low speeds of 10 mph, the abs engaged without warrant. When the failure would occur, it would cause increased stopping distance when braking at low speeds. The contact previously received notification of NHTSA recall campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: antilock) and the dealer removed and thoroughly cleaned the wheel speed sensor, mounting surface on the bearing, applied rust inhibitor to the cleaned surface, greased the mounting surface, reinstalled the wheel speed sensor, and checked the peak-to-peak output voltage to ensure the wheel speed signal was within specifications. The failure recurred and the dealer advised they would not be liable for repairs due to previous recall repairs. The failure and current mileages were 99,000.

9 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

2006 chevy Silverado truck with 9480 miles. When coming to a slow stop abs system on right side would engage under normal stopping and cause truck to lurch. Problem was a cracked speed sensor on that side - replaced part, normal braking returned.

10 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/19/2009

The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado. While driving approximately 5 to 10 mph on normal road conditions and applying the brakes, the anti-lock brake system intermittently activated. An authorized dealer stated that the failure was caused by the abs speed sensor. Nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000, service brakes, hydraulic, anti lock was related to the failure; however, the recall remedy was insufficient and does not address the defect. The vehicle was repaired. The failure and current mileages were 101,531.

11 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/07/2008

2001 chevy Silverado. No brakes at low speeds. There was a recall and truck was serviced by previous owner, obviously the parts keep corroding and chevy says they only fix once. My mechanic removed speed sensor and cleaned, but I am having him replace w/ new. To be safe. Truck cannot be driven at low speeds safely. Recall # gm 05068.

12 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/20/2007

My Silverado's brakes are vibrating and failing to stop ,again ! both front wheel sensors were replaced, per g. M. 's recall. Also I have replaced all four brake rotors at my own expense. This failure to stop has nearly caused two accidents. On one occasion the vehicle only stopped after running into a chain stretched across a driveway, this resulted in some minor damage to the front grill. I temporarily disabled the anti-lock brake system by removing the fuse, but this disables the cruise control as well. It is very much a matter of safety that the truck stops when it is supposed to.

13 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/02/2007

2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd speed sensor problems not addressed by Chevrolet saw recall for this campaign 305v379000 which states salt zone states including pennsylvania having problems that a not being met.

The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado. He stated that the abs activated without warning which increased the stopping distance. There is a recall for the antilock brakes (NHTSA campaign #05v379000). The dealer repaired recall; however, the failure continued to occur. The failure and current mileages were 59,000. The consumer stated this is the 2nd repair, both times the speed sensors were replaced. The consumer provided a copy of repair invoice. Updated 08/29/07.

15 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/01/2007

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado. While driving between one to two mph, the vehicle failed to stop unless the contact pumps the brakes three or four times. The vehicle was repaired according to NHTSA campaign # 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). The dealer replaced one speed sensor and cleaned the other. The vehicle did not have any brake failure prior to the recall repair. The current mileage is 144,000 and failure mileage was 142,000.

16 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/03/2006

: the contact stated while applying brake pressure at 10mph, there was an increased stopping distance. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined the wheel speed sensor needed to be replaced. There was a NHTSA recall, # 05v379000, regarding the antilock brakes. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN. The manufacturer was contacted.

17 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/13/2006

We purchased our 2001 chevy Silverado 3500 diesel dually truck in February of 2006. In may of 2006 we started having trouble with our brakes. When we were coming to a complete stop our brakes would give a little (like the abs were kicking in). We took our truck to a chevy dealer and they informed us it was our right front wheel speed sensor and the hub assembly. The cost would be $535 to replace the right front hub assembly and the brake stop switch. In investigating online we realized this was a very common problem and that there had been a recall on the speed sensor. In talking with the investigator with the NHTSA they informed me that the recall is only for the speed sensor and not for the hub assembly which contains the speed sensor. We currently have it in the shop and will be getting the old parts when we pick up the truck. Thank goodness that we were able to get it into the shop before we were injured in an accident like so many others or we injured someone else. I am very upset that gm is not taking more responsibility. I don't know much about trucks but I would assume something that contains an item that has been recalled would cause the whole thing to be damaged if left long enough. We did not know of the recall until after the truck was in the shop. I hope that gm realizes their mistakes and that I will recieve some compensation from them. We use our truck to do disaster response full time through a church organization and rely on the truck all of the time. We can not afford to be worrying if our brakes would hold up. I have always been a fan of chevys but now I am unsure of our safety.

18 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/08/2006

Copy of email sent to gm: I recently contacted a local dealer concerned about my abs system engaging at low speeds. He notified me that there was in fact a recall on the truck in canada and certain states in the us for corrosion problems around the abs speed sensor. He also informed me that he could not perform the recall since the truck was built and initially sold in canada. He then gave me gm "800" number to call, which I did (ref#1-409390276). She also informed me that my only option was to have the dealer perform the necessary recall and then submit the receipts to gm for "possible" reimbursement. I have since removed the abs fuse from my truck and am currently driving the truck with this feature disabled to prevent from hitting someone or something. I plan to replace the front brakes and rotor soon and I'll see if I can clear the debris problem myself. I sat and tallied the cars I've owned the last 30 years and came up with 6 different cars/trucks. As far as a historical reference this truck has been pretty good as far as typical american vehicles go. I've only had to replace the abs modulator ($1000), the rear brakes and rotors ($200 my repair), and the driver side door window drive mechanism ($200). All this with less than 60000 miles on the vehicle. There's been a severe draft on the passenger side since I bought the truck (bought one year old with 20k miles). Hmmmmm. I wonder why my other two vehicles are Toyota camry's and my next truck will probably be a Toyota as well. Thanks for the memories. Jeff.

19 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 03/31/2006

In 2013, the abs began routinely activating during braking at speeds of 5-10 mph. I found recall 05068: unwanted abs activation. My gm maintenance records noted this recall service was completed 3/31/2006. The 3/31/06 service notes were "inspections: electrical/wiring. " I contacted gm corporate customer service in Jan. 2014 to notify them that currently my abs were erroneously activating on nearly all braking events. Additionally, I asked what recall service was actually performed on 3/31/06 because the notes only indicate an inspection occurred. A conference call ensued between gm customer service, the local gm service dealership, and myself. Gm allowed 1 hour to diagnose the abs problem on 1/22/14 at the local gm dealer. The resulting 1/22/14 service notes were: "diagnose & found left front wheel speed sensor dropping out. Inspect wiring for poor connections or damaged wiring. All ok. Gave estimate to replace left front wheel hub assembly. " in person, the dealership said this bearing was worn & was causing abs activation. I left upset, without the $642 wheel hub assembly install because I didn't believe the bearing was worn. On 5/30/2014, I had another service shop independently diagnose my trucks bearings, tie rods and suspension. They confirmed my original belief that the bearings did not need to be replaced. I did have both inner tie rods replaced at this time. On 6/17/14, I took my truck to a 3rd service shop to have them complete a front end alignment because inner tie rods were recently installed. I also asked them to determine if this bearing was worn. Their opinion was the bearing was ok and no maintenance was required. In summary, the gm service shop had opportunities on 3/31/06 and 1/22/14 to complete the recall remedy and failed. I have removed the fuses to disengage the abs and prevent an accident because this condition still exists.

20 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 03/24/2006

Front hub/bearing assembly and wheel speed sensor not working when vehicle is traveling between 3 and 10 mph and brakes are applied. The abs is activating causing one wheel to continue and speed higher than other preventing safe turning and stopping of vehicle. The truck had this problem upon purchase, and dealer attempted to fix. Approximately 3 months later vehicle began doing same thing. This was a recall, and was taken to dealer to be repaired. Dealer only cleaned the area. Chevrolet was called by me and dealer and refused to replace hub, so vehicle is still doing same thing. Representative from Chevrolet on phone was rude, and replied that all that was covered under recall was cleaning hub. However the recall notice clearly states "in some cases, the front wheel speed sensor may need to be replaced. " it also states "this service will be performed at no charge to you. " I received recall notice in mail, and took immediately to dealer only to have problem keep occurring and Chevrolet refuse to fix it. This problem poses a danger and could cause a crash because of failure to stop.

21 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/22/2006

: the contact stated the vehicle was having a decrease in braking power and there was a loud squeaking, rubbing noise when applying the brakes. The brakes on the rear were replaced. Two days later the rear wheels locked up. The dealership determined the wheel speed sensors were bad. There is an NHTSA recall, # 05v379000 regarding the service brakes, hydraulic: antilock; however the vehicle is not having the same problems as indicated in the recall; although the contact feels the two are related.

22 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/10/2006

2/10/06- letter from gm denying recall on 2001 chevy Silverado truck, reference recall notice 05v379000. 4/9/03 - took vehicle to authorized gm dealer with concern that abs brakes malfunctioning. They replaced 4 wheel drive hub because no code showed on brakes. 9/17/03 took vehicle back to authorized gm dealer for same problem, they verified and replaced low speed sensor. 1/30/06, sent letter to gm customer service with information on repairs and notified them that they hadn't sent us a recall notice. These brakes have been repaired at the dealer and at a private repair shop and they still pulsate and fail at low speeds.

23 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/27/2006

Driving down the road you go to put the brakes on to slow down, and there is pre activation of abs system on dry roads, and then when you almost get to a stop the brake pedal fades away, causing you to roll forward at least 5 feet until pedal comes back and stops you. Called gm and local dealer because I heard from regular mechanic there was a recall on the Chevrolet trucks for abs problems and they both told me that my truck wasn't part of recall ,only up to 2002 were recalled that I would have to pay a non-returnable fee for a diagnostic test to see if it is the wheel speed sensor is corroded and if they can duplicate the problems I say it has. Then if they do gm said they would try to work out something with dealer on my payment of the repairs.

24 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/13/2006

Wheel speed sensor is falsely activating the abs.

25 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/29/2005

: the contact stated the brakes where applied at 8-10pmh and the abs engaged, resulting in the contact having a crash. To avoid a rear end collision, the contact left the road and hit an embankment on the passenger side of the vehicle. The police did not take a report at the scene and no injuries were sustained. After the accident the contact received a recall 05v379000, concerning the antilock brakes. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, the speed sensors were cleaned and it was determined the hydraulic pump needed to be replaced. However, the dealer was not able to determine whether the brake failure and accident were caused by the abs sensor or the hydraulic pump. The contact felt the pump should have been included in the recall campaign. Additionally, the brake rotors were replaced, due to corrosion, after only 4,000 miles.

26 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/22/2005

The contact states there is an NHTSA recall campaign 05v379000 concerning antilock brakes. This vehicle is experiencing the same problems as indicated in the recall, but this vehicle is not included in the recall due to VIN. The contact repaired the vehicle at his own expense. Updated 12/7/2005. The dealer replaced both front wheel speed sensors.

27 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/04/2005

I took my 1999 Chevrolet 1500 series pickup to a local dealer to get the recall on the front speed sensors fixed. The anti-lock brakes were activating every time I tried to stop the vehicle. They said they serviced the truck but when I picked it up the problem persisted. I took it back a second time and they told me that the right front hub assembly was bad. I took the truck to the mecanic I normally use and he put the hub in, the problem still persisted. I called general motors to report that the dealership didn't fix the problem, then told me to replace a part that wasn't defective. They did nothing, now I have a truck that I make a monthly payment on and is unsafe to drive as it will not stop.

28 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/14/2005

1) brakes activating anti-skid when braking at low speeds with extremely unpredictable stopping !!!!!!! 2) brakes failed to stop vehicle four times: in garage, in parking lot, in work place parking lot and at intersection. 3) taken to harold Chevrolet 10/14/05 to have checked out and repaired. Found out there was a campaign for this problem. Harold inspected and cleaned the front wheel speed sensors and mounting surfaces. On 10/17/05 brakes failed again even after having taken the vehicle in for repair. Vehicle did not stop at intersection!!!! took vehicle back to harold. As a good will jester they replaced one right hub and speed sensor assembly for our safe driving. Received a recall letter upon returning home 10/17/05.

29 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/21/2005

The county in which we live receives over 100+ inches of snow on average. The states that surround us, west virginia and pennsylvania, are considered by your definition to be in the "rust belt" our state and county road crews use a lot of salt and chemicals on the roads in the winter due to the high amount of snow that we receive each year. For this reason we feel that you should consider this area in the coverage zone for the safety recall of the front wheel speed sensor corrosion. The Silverado would make noises, vibrate and would feel like it was not going to stop in the necessary and appropriate distance at low speeds. The brakes felt mushy and would vibrate when coming to a stop. At first it only happened infrequently, but then began to happen all the time. The Silverado was taken to the local dealership to be serviced and the technician tested both the left and right front sensors. The technician then tried to remove and clean the above mentioned parts, which could not be done. The result was that a new hub assembly on both sides was installed . After this repair was completed, both the right and left sides were retested and found to be working ok. There have been no problem since this repair was completed. The old parts are available for inspection if needed.

30 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/13/2005

I purchased a used 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 4wd in July and around sept of this year I had trouble breaking in low mph situations such as stop signs, lights and in parking situations where the abs would trigger on dry clean pavement causing many close calls where I almost rear ended vehicles or ran into buildings ect. There is a recall on this particular problem in "salt using states" which ironically does not include wisconsin or minnesota. The recall# is 05068 regarding wheel speed sensors in years 99 thru 02 models.

31 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/06/2005

Nhtsa campaign id number : 05v379000 according to this recall, the abs sensor can give false readings due to dirt and grim build up. Gm's response for corrective action is to clean the sensor. What happens once the sensor is dirty again?I don't see how this could be a corrective action, because the chance of it happening again is great. My father owned this truck before me and had the same problem I am now having the abs engaging at low speeds, (I almost crashed twice, because of this). My father had the dealer repair the truck and at that time the service manager told my dad the only way to fix it was replace the hubs. The truck was under warranty so the service manager put down that the hubs were bad so my dad would not have to incur the cost. (sensor is warranty item, hubs are not). (country club Chevrolet oneonta, NY) once again my father was told the sensor can not be replaced with out changing the hubs. I have also been told this by two other dealers. (norris Chevrolet westfield , NJ- sullivan Chevrolet rosepark, NJ). The hubs were replaced at 60,000 miles, at 72,000 the problem once again returned. So this has been a problem for about 7 months, I know when driving the truck to give myself extra stopping distance, it does not always do it mostly after sharp turns (pulling in drive way or parking lot). So if the hubs have to be replaced as per three dealers, so why does the recall corrective action take about removing sensor and cleaning (see following) dealers are to remove the wheel speed sensor and thoroughly clean the wheel speed sensor mounting surface on the bearing, apply rust inhibitor to the cleaned surface, grease the mounting surface, reinstall the wheel speed sensor, and check the peak-to-peak output voltage to ensure the wheel speed signal is within specifications. I think gm needs to resolve the issue not just apply a temporary fix. Regards philip j savarese.

32 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/30/2005

The contact stated when the brakes were applied at low speeds the abs activated. The service dealer determined the wheel speed sensors needed to be cleaned. The repair was done at the contact's expense. This remedied the problem. Recall 05v379000 for this year, make, and model was issued, but this vehicle was not included in the recall. Due to VIN.

33 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/30/2005

The contact stated that when applying brake pressure to make a sudden stop the abs did not activate. There was no feeling of pulsation. There was extended stopping distance. Was able to avoid a rear end collision. The contact took the vehicle to a dealer, who insisted the disc brakes delaminated. There was NHTSA recall , but this vehicle was not included in the recall due to VIN although the vehicle experienced the same abs problem as indicated in the recall. No repairs have been made at this time. Updated 12/7/2005 - the vehicle was taken to the dealer who determine that the speed sensor was corroded. The dealer informed the consumer that there was a recall for the 1500 Silverado but not the 2500hd Silverado.

34 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/06/2005

Upon stopping at very slow speed, the abs brakes felt like they activated, causing loss of braking power, causing collision with parked vehicle. Vehicle was brought into shop, diagnostic showed faulty front/left speed sensor. This part was replaced, vehicle was road tested, and all appeared to be okay. After driving less than 300 miles, vehicle is experiencing same problems.

35 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/01/2005

2002 chevy 1500 Silverado anti lock brake failure. At slow speed stoping brake pedal goes to the floor, anti lock brakes activate, truck won't stop, grinding type noises coming from brakes,at 25,000 miles all 4 rotors were badly rusted and worn. Replace all rotors and shoes, still had problem. Had all speed sensors on meter, shows no problem. Have read articles and complaints about this problem with this model and year and that chevy had recall in canada but not u. S. I have came close to rear ending cars in front of me. This vehicle is a hazzard and should be recalled.
