1 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/11/2016

Front brakes wore out on both outboard pads. Inboard pads are almost new. Truck has 32,000mi. I bought it new. Dealer said calipers were not sliding. I checked the brakes myself and found that not true. I replaced the pads and rotors myself and took pictures and saved all parts. There must be a reason, and I can't be the only one.

I have c hanged the front calipers since this is where it is happening since the calipers went bad so did the roters an pads so those needed to be changed also. . . Which is money I don't have . . . . . It worked for a total of 4 days then problem began again. Please inform me of other issues and what can be done to resolve this problem especially since I drive this truck to earn a living for my family everyday. . Thank you for your attention to this matter.

3 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/24/2013

I had just picked up 2 cu. Yds of mulch and was going home when I was coming up to a roundabout. I slowed down more than usual, started braking early, since I was driving with a load. As I got to the intersection I noticed a car that was coming through quickly and got to the intersection before I did so I had to stomp on the brake a little more than I had planned. As I did the brake pedal went to the floor. Luckily the hole was small enough that I still had some pressure and was able to slow down and just miss the car. I slowly crawled through the intersection and pulled over at the next street. I was thinking it was the calipers but when I looked under the truck I saw that the leak was coming from higher up. I crawled under the truck to get a better look and saw that all the brake line where severely corroded. I had the truck towed back home and need to have it towed to the dealer tomorrow to see what the damage is.

4 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/17/2013

My truck has a serious rust problem. I was driving from pennsylvania to buffalo when my brake line snapped "spewing brake fluid all over"on the highway while driving at 65mph. At the dealer I was showed that not only where my brake lines rotted but everything involving the brakes "calipers, rotors, pads " fuel lines, frame control arms, everything under the truck, which was bought new. The brake pads, calipers & rotors were replaced by my mechanic at 25,000 with parts bought by gm. My truck is in excellent shape from what you can see & is garage kept. From what I see this is a common problem with gm trucks from 2000-2012.

5 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/06/2013

Approaching a red light. Break pedal went to floor, vehicle didn't stop. Due to my driving experience, I downshifted and applied the emergency break to stop vehicle. Expensive repair of $3,500 due to extensive rust corrosion, all break lines front to rear, rotors with calipers and backing plates & pads. Vehicle only has 64,671 at time of finished repair. Truck always serviced and taken car of with new tires, and breaks in past, this is a major problem if manufacturer has trucks out on the road losing breaks at low mileages. This should be a recall. Owed Toyota truck for 13 years and use to have it in water all the time with no major corrosion / rust problems.

6 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

Was hooking up trailer and started to move touched the brake and petal went to floor. Left rear brake line rusted completely into . All brake lines very rusty. Because of rust I have replaced all 4 rotors, all 4 calipers all 4 shocks, always parked in garage. The truck frame is total rust. The rims had to be painted because of rust the spare is solid rust.

7 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 06/13/2013

While bleeding brake system after changing rear calipers found a rupture in the brake line on the frame by the front tire. The line was completely rusted and failed. Luckily in the driveway and not the highway.

8 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/15/2013

My home is the last one on a dead end road. When applying the brake to turn into the drive, the driver side brake line burst by the caliper. The truck carried my wife, son and myself into a 200 ft. Deep ravine as a result of this. The truck had just been tuned up for a trip to nashville TN. If this would have happened in the mountains, I wouldn't be alive today. After repairing the truck, the passenger side brake line burst as the new brakes were being bled. Both calipers needed replaced as well, due to falling apart from rust. Bleeder screws completely rusted in half, rubber brake hoses bursting, metal brake lines rusting and springing leaks everywhere, and still no recall? gm should have to pay for these repairs at the very least. I myself, still have to figure out how to deal with my newly fused spine due to this accident.

9 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

Brake lines rusted out. This is the second time I have had this problem with this vehicle. A hole developed in a brake line which resulted in no brakes at all. I had to spend $1400 at the chevy dealership to have all of my brake lines and front calipers replaced.

10 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/02/2013

I have been dealing with rusting brake components since the calipers rusted and fell off at 36,000 miles. Now my garage kept Silverado has brake lines falling off that nearly cause an accident.

11 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/10/2012

This truck has chattered, hopped, and had bad brakes as soon as we drove the truck off of the lot. When we went with the dealer who sold us the truck, my husband said why is it vibrating & he told us that it was in the tires from "sitting". It has had 2 new wheels & numerous brakes, pads, rotors, calipers, drums. & it still vibrates. The dealership has even put another trucks tires & rims on the truck & it still vibrates. This is unacceptable for a new vehicle. When I called the gm district specialist on 5/29/13 she told me that the vibration & hit & miss acceleration was a characteristic of the truck. $40,000 truck & it is not a very good ride.

12 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/28/2012

While driving 2006 chevy Silverado pick up truck, my wife experienced sudden and total brake failure. When she pressed on brakes to slow vehicle, pedal fell to floor and brakes were unresponsive. My wife barely avoided an accident and pulled into shopping center. After arriving at scene to retrieve my wife, I checked brake fluid level, which was below "minimum". I added a full can of brake fluid, and had her press brakes while vehicle was stationary. I could hear hissing, and saw liquid spray escape under pressure from under hood. Mechanic later informed me that brake line for front brakes was rusted through and brakes failed when system pressure from applying brakes burst the rusted line. He said my wife was lucky she didn't crash or worse. He advised me that entire undercarriage was very rusted and other parts were so rusted that in order to bleed air from brake system, they had to replace rusted calipers. I am concerned about safety of this vehicle and based on my review of other drivers' complaints and internet forums, it appears catastrophic brake failure is a widespread and pervasive problem for gm Silverado vehicles. See https://sites. Google. Com/site/gmbadbrakes/ please investigate this as a matter of public safety.

13 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/05/2012

Catastrophic front brake failure on interstate highway. No accident or injuries, but repairs included brake lines, calipers and pads due to corrosion of said lines and caliper assemblies. Shop said this is a common occurrence for gm products regardless of age of the vehicle.

14 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/10/2012

While driving my 1999 Chevrolet Silverado on Friday, may 10, 2012, at approximately 15 mph, I attempted to stop at a stop sign. The brake pedal went to the floor and I needed the emergency brake to come to a complete stop and return to my residence (fortunately only approximately 1/2 mile away). I was able to get an appointment to have the truck examined at classic Chevrolet (approximately one mile away in bellevue, PA) on may 15, 2012. I was then informed all the brake lines needed replaced due to corrosion along with the two front calipers. Total cost to me was $1,228. 00!.

15 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/30/2012

Was traveling at 45 mph and had to make a hard brake application due to unanticipated vehicle stoppage ahead. When speed declined to about 25 mph there was total brake failure and the brake pedal went to the floor. I thought the antilock system was engaging since the pavement was wet although the brake pedal seemed to go farther down than normal. At this time the multiple brake service warnings came on. Just as I was beginning to veer off the road to avoid rearending the car ahead, it started moving and I was able to avoid hitting it. I drove home about another mile and the brake lines were leaking onto the driveway. The truck was towed to the dealer who replaced all the brake lines and both front brake calipers due to corrosion.

16 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/16/2011

Went to back up out of driveway and peddle went to floor. No breaks hit parking break nothing there either. Two lines rusted threw and two mor of 5 were bad. Back calipers frozen and damaged . Thought breaks would never fail totally but this is not true. No warning lights either just roll and stop when you hit something. Not fun. Good thing I was not on the freeway or in traffic could have killed one. . . . Not happy. . . . . . . . . Just nice fat bill to pay. . .

17 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/11/2011

I am not sure of the exact date of the first incident. Can report if necessary. On Saturday, August 11, 2012, after a stop at the end of my driveway, I proceeded across the street and stopped again at my parents driveway to pick up their mail. Upon climbing the hill of their driveway, I attempted to stop in front of their garage when my brake lines ruptured and I lost all braking power. Thankfully, I was able to put the truck in park before hitting the garage door. I had my mechanic tow the truck to his shop and he said it would cost a "couple thousand dollars" because he needs to lift the cab off the frame to replace the lines. Last year, I had to replace all of the caliper, rotors, pads, parking brake pads and backing plate and all of the rear brake lines which were severely corroded. I have less than 33000 miles on this vehicle which I bought new. The total cost of those repairs was 2800. Add the 2000 or so for this repair and it comes to almost 5000. I feel there should be some relief from gm due to the unusual wear and corrosion and the low mileage. Please advise me of any necessary steps to resolve this issue.

18 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 03/30/2010

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado. The contact took the vehicle to a local repair facility to have the tires rotated when he was informed that the entire lower ball joint assembly was defective and the caliper and brake pads were loose and flopping around. The mechanic refused to repair the vehicle because of the severity of problem. The contact drove the vehicle to an authorized dealer but was told that it could not be inspected until the following week. The contact had not called the manufacturer when the complaint was filed. The vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 91,200.

19 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/24/2009

Brake lines completely rusted out. Parking total failure . Rear caliper froze will not release. Frame has rust out holes.

20 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/31/2006

: the contact stated while there was moisture on the brakes, the brakes would not grab properly. The condition worsened while towing any load. The dealership determined the caliper rod corroded due to the vehicle being located in a salt belt state. The dealership replaced the caliper brackets, pads, and rotors. The problem persisted.

22 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/27/2006

Premature rear disc brake failure--2003 Chevrolet Silverado, 31750 miles-rear disc rotors rusted, pitted, flaking. Dealer replaced rotors and discs at my cost. Even though rotors are obviously suffering from weather and salt, dealer insists that the calipers still work, therefore it is not a warranty issue. I contend that the literal disintegration of the rotors caused the rapid wear of the brake pads. When inspected in August of 2005, I was told the pads were at 75% thickness. The truck still has 6 months left on the manuf. Warranty.

23 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/21/2005

Consumer letter regarding safety deficiency on 2002 Chevrolet Silverado braking system. The brake rotors and calipers have been replaced several times.

24 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/04/2005

The contact stated the left front brake caliper broke while driving. The vehicle was taken to a certified dealer for inspection and repair. The manufacturer was contacted. They have agreed to reimburse the contact a portion of the repair cost.

25 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/05/2005

The abs activated while attempting to stop the vehile. The dealer repalced the r and l sensor, the brakes, the calipers and still the abs system kicks in.

26 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/30/2004

While driving and trying to park the vehicle depressed the brake pedal and vehicle surged. Consumer has had the rotors replaced at 32, 000 miles all around the vehicle. Dealer told consumer that the calipers were working about 50%.

27 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/07/2004

2002 chevy Silverado z71 truck - bought new from mcclinton Chevrolet parkersburg wv. The truck started with a clicking noise when put in reverse. Took to machanic who stated that all 4 rotors were pitted and rusted and needed replaced. The truck has 54,000 miles. Took to two different chevy dealerships the second finally diagnosed that the calipers were stuck and not allowing the pads to move when necessary. They stated that they have had numerous complaints about this problem and have found that the rotors are made of an inferior metal. The problem is not due to driving habits or environmental issues this is a manufacturer defect that if not caught early by the owner causes about $800. 00 to replace the rotors, calipers, and brake pads. This needs to be looked into and Chevrolet needs to cover this type of cost. Loyal customers deserve better treatment from manufacturers. They have changed the brake system on the 2005. I guess that this tells us something. They know that there is a problem but don't want to be held responsible.

28 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/10/2004

Bought in 2000 brakes and all components have been replaced by owner at owners expense. Brakes have a growling crunching sound on and off. The brakes will become disfunctual unless you compleatly release and immedieatly re apply. This has been an ongoing mechanical failure. At 11,000 miles this vehicle litterally "blew the front rotors into pieces. Gm would not honor the repairs that I have continiously kept having to pay for.

29 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/07/2004

The brake pedal would continuously and intermittently harden when applied at various speed of 0-70 mph. This resulted in extended stopping distance. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who replaced the abs caliper, but the problem recurred.

30 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 03/09/2004

On 3/9/04 I took my 1999 chevy Silverado to the dealership to have the front brakes serviced. The dealer serviced the front brakes, which showed "normal wear". The dealer then checked the rear brakes and found that both rear rotors showed severe pitting. Both rear rotors were so baddly pitted that they were unable to resurface them. The dealer advised that the right rotor was 85 percent worn and the left side was 30 percent worn. The dealer also advised that the right rear caliper was sticking which led to the excessive wear. The dealer had no explanation for the excessive pitting/rusting of the rear rotors. The dealer stated that it appeared similiar to vehicles that were recieved from auction that had been sitting for three to six months. Both rear rotors and the right rear brake caliper had to be replaced costing nearly $1000. 00. My vehicle only has 49,186 miles on it. There was no indication, ie. More force than normal needed on the brake pedal for braking, grinding, or pulling to one side or the other, during braking that something may be wrong. It appears from other complaints that I have read, this is a common problem with this vehicle.

31 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/10/2004

I have a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 4x4 pick-up, which to my dismay needed rear brake replacement with less than 50,000 miles (90% highway miles). I was told by the service manager of the local gm dealer (hutchins Chevrolet, soldotna, ak. ) that this is a common problem with these vehicles due to a design flaw. Had I not been concerned over a developing squeezing noise and taken my truck in for inspection, the potential for brake failure would have been immanent. Instead of addressing the problem as a viable safety concern, they decided that a simple front mount mud- guard "may help" pro-long wear. This is simply unacceptable. . . This is (was) a 34,000 dollar truck with a serious design flaw that the manufacturer should be held accountable for not the consumer. . . Brake replacement cost me $ 566. 00 that I should not have been forced to take out of pocket due to their flaw.

32 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/05/2004

The rear passenger side caliper was sticking using only one side of the brake pad. As a result a grinding noise was produced. Please provide additional information.

33 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/05/2003

The truck experienced brake failure. The brakes failed to stop the truck immediately. The rear right caliper locked up and ate the rotor. The other rotors were pitted and rusted. The front and left brakes had 100% pad on them, only the rear right pad had worn. The manufacturer indicated the truck was not being driven enough. The lleft rear wheel was the only wheel stopping the vehicle.

34 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/24/2003

I purchased a new 2002 chevy Silverado ext cab 4wd in November 2001. The truck currently has 48000 miles on it. The rear brakes have been completely rebuilt 3 times due to excess wear and failure. The dealership has paid for the repairs twice and split the cost once but has advised they will not pay for it anymore. The cause appears to be sticking which wears the pads out which in turn wear out the rotors. The calipers freeze up and require replacing. The parking brake is used regularly and works okay. After the last repair, the abs chatters when coming to a stop on clear dry pavement, like a parking lot or stop sign.

35 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 06/26/2003

2000, Chevrolet Silverado k1500 truck - rear brake rotors failed at 14,000 miles on new vehicle purchase. Replaced by dealer, and failed again after only 9,000 miles. Rotors rusted from the inside of metal outward. Appears that rear brake design or rotor parts quality is defective. Normal expected life of rear brakes is typically 50,000 to 75,000 miles. Dealer confirms that gm has had problems with this model. Contacted gm customer service but to no avail at this point.
