Chevrolet Silverado owners have reported 78 problems related to brake disc pads (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/12/2014

I began hearing a grinding sound in the front end. Upon removing the tires and rear brake drums I noticed the left front brake pads and the right rear brake shoes showed excessive wear. I know that combination disk/drum brakes use a proportioning valve to adjust hydraulic pressure. I also know that newer systems are dual circuit with one front and one rear wheel on each circuit. I feel my proportioning valve is either misadjusted or malfunctioning applying greater pressure to one circuit over the other. This could cause swerving or a spin out under heavy braking situations.

2 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/14/2014

Brake rotors are deeply pitted--not from rust--was unaware of the condition until I replaced brake pads @84000 miles.

3 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/09/2013

Noticed that all the front brake pads have very little wear and even the rotors are not being worn (either the entire surface (lf inner rotor) or just on part of the rotor surfaces). The back brake pads were worn down and had to be replaced and seem to be wearing fine. Is there a problem with the front brakes not functioning on these chevy trucks? the front brakes are definitely not functioning properly.

4 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds and attempting to make a stop, the anti-lock braking system activated before the vehicle would stop. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the brakes and the brake pads were fine. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure however no further assistance was provided. The current mileage was 106,000. The failure mileage was 103,000.

5 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/06/2011

Used the vehicle for vacation in 2011 as it was just 1 year old. Very little brake ped left going down hill. Going down hill and step on the brake and there was a bad vibration and growling noise from the brakes. I had it checked and the dealer ground the brake rotors. This never solved the problem, so they replaced the rotors. This solved the problem for the warped rotors for a while. Now the problem started again with 23000 miles and only growls and vibrates when going down hill where you have to step down a little harder. Had it checked out again and they say the rotors are warped again. I replaced the rotors and put new brake pads on and the problem is still there. I do not drive the vehicle hard and only about 4000 miles per year. Whats causing the brake rotors to keep warping.

6 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/15/2009

Ongoing brake problems with rotors and pads. The initial failure of all rotors and pads were replaced by dealer 11,505 miles. Rear pads have failed again at 17,589 miles. This vehicle was in for a state safety inspection and failed so again I will be in contact with dealership.

7 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/15/2009

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado. While driving at 45 mph he felt a pulsating sensation and all of a sudden he began to apply pressure to the brake pedal. The vehicle stopped but felt as if it did not come to a complete stop. He then pulled over and could not locate the failure . The vehicle was then taken to a dealer. The technician states there was normal wear and tear on the vehicle. The dealer stated they will not repair the failure due to no warranty on the vehicle. The contact states the vehicle had 23,000 miles and the brake in the rear rotted out including the rotors. The brake pads slid out from the rotors. A technician that located the failure stated that the brakes should have not gone out at 23,000 miles. The contact paid to have the vehicle repair. The failure mileage was 23,150 and current mileage was 23,200. Updated 10/23/09 the rotors were pitted and a piece of the rotor was missing. Updated 10/26/jb.

8 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/20/2007

We purchased a new 2004 Chevrolet Silverado that currently has only 11,475 miles on the vehicle. I was informed during a safety inspection that the brake rotors and brakes need to be replaced (complete) and had commented he has experienced "many failures" such as mine. Failure due to porous casting of rotors causing pads to become unusable. Servicing dealer that inspected failure listed as rust? the repair will cost in excess of $700. 00. In researching the failure I found interesting documentation that the failure of the rotor material has been an ongoing problem with Chevrolet products and many claims have been filed with the NHTSA. I am aware Chevrolet has paid claims to others with the same conditions and I feel the NHTSA should look at this problem before there are fatalities caused by this material failure. Repairs have been made by Chevrolet at not cost to me however I was not entitled to the original parts since cost to me was waived. Now we can only hope the new rotors have a better service life then the original set.

9 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/07/2007

The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado. The interior passenger side rear brake pad wore out and damaged the rotor. The contact replaced the rotors and pads. Chevrolet stated that nothing could be done outside of the TSB that they issued for this failure. The current mileage was 50,050 and failure mileage was 50,000.

11 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/15/2006

: the contact stated while attempting to stop the vehicle, excessive pressure had to be applied to the brake pedal. The vehicle was taken to the dealership who determined the brake rotors and pads were rusted. The vehicle was located in a salt belt state. The rotors and pads were replaced.

12 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/21/2006

: the contact stated about every 6,000-7,000 miles, when the pressure is applied to the brake, the front end shakes badly. The first three times the vehicle was taken to the dealership where the brake pads were resurfaced. The last time the front brake pads and rotors were replaced. The problem has recurred.

13 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 06/12/2006

: the contact stated while depressing the brake pedal there is an increased braking effort required to stop the vehicle. The pedal almost goes to the floor before stopping the vehicle. New brake pads were placed on the vehicle on 6-11-06 but the problem still persists. There is an NHTSA recall, # 04v045000, regarding the service brakes, hydraulic. The VIN was not included in the recall.

14 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/01/2006

While moving at slow speed in stop and go traffic, sometimes without any warning brakes will not stop truck. When pedal is released and stepped on again pedal is hard and there are no brakes period after a few seconds brakes will come back and stop the vehicle. Also on dry pavement at speeds under 5 miles per hour while applying steady pressure on brake pedal anti-lock brakes engage when there is no wheel slippage. If the car in front of you stops suddenly and you step on the brakes in a panic stop you may or may not have brakes. Vehicle in question has less than 40,000 miles and other than recall for the brakes has had nothing done to the brakes. It has been doing this for the last 2 years. The brake pads have been examined by myself and are worn very little. After I took the truck in brake recall, I have often wondered if the dealer in kentucky did anything to the brakes at all. Brakes on this vehicle have gradually gotten worse over time.

15 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/15/2006

: the contact stated the brake pedal was spongy and the vehicle required excessive stopping distance. This caused an accident, while driving 45 mph the vehicle would not stop when a vehicle pulled out in front of the contact. There was minor damage to both vehicles, but a police report was not taken. The dealership determined the front and rear rotors were rusted. The rear rotors and pads must be replaced. The vehicle is located in a salt belt state. Updated 03/03/06.

16 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/21/2005

Rear brake pads do not make full contact with brake disc. Outer circumference of brake disc is untouched by brake pad when brakes are applied. I estimate that rear brakes are less then 50% effective due to lack of pad contact. Rear discs were defectively cast so that final machining missed the outer circumference of disc. I have digital photos to verify.

17 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/16/2005

: the contact stated the vehicle was inspected and the mechanic determined the rear brake rotors and rear pads were rusted and grooved. The front brakes and pads were also rusted and grooved, but not as much as the rear. The rear brakes and rotors were replaced on 11-16-05. Updated 05/02/06.

19 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/20/2005

I bought my 1999 checy Silverado new. The brakes were never as good as the vehicle I had traded in or in fact drove at work for my employer. I took my vehicle back to the dealer, mckee auto several times. The service advisors would not log my complaint or attempt to repair the vehicle. I have run several stoplights because of the lousy brakes, luckily there haven't been any accidents. Last October the rear brakes went out on this vehicle. I replaced the rear pads and rotors while the front brakes look the same as new. This leads me to believe maybe they aren't hardly being used. I thought there was supposed to have been a recall for early models of this vehicle, but was never notified.

20 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/17/2005

On 17 oct 05, I was required to replace all four rotors and associated brake pads on my 2000 chev Silverado truck. This vehicle has less than 50,000 miles, is not routinely exposed to corrosive road conditions, and all 4 rotors were completely eaten by rust. In fact, the rotors indicated that my vehicle was reduced to less than 40% of the original design braking capacity. The rotors are heavily corroded and pitted with rust. They are not able to be resurfaced. Chevrolet was contacted and, to date, has displayed little or no interest in dealing with this problem. The service manager at my dealership indicates that this is a known, on-going problem. Significant numbers of gm vehicles appear to be on the road with vastly reduced braking capacity due to this metal defect in the brake rotor system.

21 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/01/2005

The contact stated the rear brake pads wore out unevenly and too quickly. The dealer said the rear brake pads needed to be replaced. The work has not been done.

22 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/28/2005

We have a 2001 chevy Silverado pick-up. Last week we were informed that it needs a new brake job because of the salt corrosion being thrown into the brake pads and a problem with the abs sensor. Of course this will cost $600. Now I see on the internet that there is a recall for this problem for part of the country, but not colorado. Why do they get their trucks fixed when colorado has just as much dirt and salt on the roads from our winters of snow? the safety of my family should count, too. It should not take an accident to fix this!!!! and I should not have to pay to have this repaired, when they know there is already a problem and they are fixing it in some parts of the country.

27 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/09/2005

Dt: was driving down the road you approached a toll booth, tried to slow down and applied brake pressure. The pedal almost goes to the floor, felt the abs tried to equalize. The vehicle had to be stopped by emergency brake alone. Has been having an infrequent "weird feeling" in brakes lately. Has not been taken to dealer due to expense, had to make repair out of pocket. All 4 rotors were corrosive and prematurely aged despite the mileage. Surface were delaminated and falling apart. The pads were however were okay.

28 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/26/2005

29 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/14/2005

#1 2001 Silverado when stopping gradually once I slow to less than 10 mph the antilock brake system kicks in causing it to take a much greater distance to stop than what it normally takes. When I asked my dealer about this they said that they haven't heard of this problem. However while doing some research on the internet I've found a huge amount of complaints about this. #2 with about 40000 miles on my truck the rear brakes started making some noise, so I pulled the wheels off to have a look and found that both rear rotors were chewed up beyond being serviceable. When I took the brakes apart I found that the brake pads still had plenty of material on them but they just destroyed the rotors as if the rotors were made out of a steel that was too soft. So $350. 00 for just the parts is what this cost me. I spoke to my local dealer about this and they told me that they haven't heard of this before. Again when I looked on the internet I found a bunch of complaints of the same thing.

30 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

32 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/23/2005

Intermittently the brake pedal hardened after applying the brakes several times while driving. This caused extended stopping distance, and vehicle did not stop. Vehicle was taken to the dealer, who replaced both rear drums and brake pads. However, the problem recurred. When the consumer turns the vehicle at a 90 degree angle the brakes only go down about 1 or 2 inches and are hard to push down any further. The brakes do not stop the vehicle. The consumer had to stomp on the brakes 2 to 5 times for them to stop the vehicle.

33 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/02/2004

Outside disc brake pad on right rear wheel wears out prematurely causing the brake disc to be damaged. Rear right side axle is alloed to float from side to side in the axle housing allowing the brake pad to be loaded by the weight of the triuck during normal operation. This loading causes the premature brake pad wear.

34 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/15/2004
