I own a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado hd 2500 which was purchased new in sept. 2002. The vehicle replaced a 1989 Silverado 2500 which had 189,000 miles at the time of sale. Never did I have a brake problem with that vehicle or any other. Since the time of purchase, the brakes were very soft and the vehicle slow to stop. I attributed this to the weight of the vehicle. The antilock breaks, my first on a truck, seemed to activate more than I would expect. I regularly have the truck serviced at either the dealer or at a goodyear service center. It should be noted that either of these are quick to spot something that they can charge you to replace. The truck has slightly over 40,000 miles, almost all of which are under highway driving conditions. I commute 25 miles when I do drive it to work and that is primarily at non-rush hour times. All but the last mile is on the highway or on country roads. In other words, very little braking. At least half of the miles have been recorded on long highway trips. I rarely pull anything with the truck. Rarely has the truck carried heavy loads. Recently I noticed that the vehicle would vibrate violently when I applied the breaks. I took it to the dealer to have it checked. I was informed that all 4 rotors needed to be replaced for a cost of nearly $1,200 dollars. I have never even had to replace a pad on the brake system - the part that should wear out. The dealer and the manufacture just say that it is a maintenance item and deny a problem exists. My 10 year old car has 85,000 milesand just recently had the pads replaced and the rotors turned for the first time. In other words, this is not a driving habit related problem. As I look at consumer information on the internet, I find that I am not alone with this sort of problem. This is a factory defect that can cause death and or injury. I am currently afraid to drive the truck until something is done.

2005 Silverado LS extended cab: extreme heat with smoke billowing from the front disc brakes. Extremely hot hubs left and right front. Proir to todays pre-fire conditons, I reported to the Chevrolet dealer that the front brakes seem to "stick" while driving and were hot with a burning smell. (truck was purchased last month and has only 466 miles) intermittent hot hubs and burn smell, but no smoke. Today, reporting fire conditions with the extreme heat and billowing smoke. Left a message to the Chevrolet dealer and will put in their shop tommorrow the 8th of April 2005.

After hearing grinding noises, I inspected rear brakes and found rear inner brake pads had prematurely worn out. After disassembling rear brakes found pads frozen (stuck) on pad guides (had to force off with hammer) which prevented pads releasing from rotor and caused uneven and premature wear of pads and destroyed rotors. New pads were purchased and upon installation realized even new pads would not slide freely on pad guides. Local chevy dealer states they are unaware of any known problems. After searching numerous forums on internet and speaking with other Silverado owners found this is a common problem yet manufacturer does not want to take responsibility. To avoid this problem from recurring I had guide notches on pads machined slightly oversize than oem. So far no problems to report. If I can figure this out why cant gm.

The rear disc brakes wear out prematurely. They wear completely down to the rotors before one is aware that brakes are bad. Contacted the dealer. However, they will not do anything to assist the consumer.
Front/rear brakes wore out prematurely. Dealership repaired the problem.

Both rear rotors have heavy corrosion. Inboard disc pads wore to metal. Out board pads have over 1/4" left on them. Emergency brakes have stuck and wore out. 42,000 miles is too early to have this type of problem! it is a safety issue. I had no idea that my rotors were grooved and the brakes worn out. There was no indication. Dearlership will not stand behind the product saying that it is normal wear. Other dealership says it is not. GMC so far has not been helpful.
Brake calipers are deteriorating the metal surface which is building rust, and destroying brake pads. Contacted dealer, and dealer stated caliper and pads had to be replaced.
I had a grinding noise from the rear passenger side brake. I pulled my tire and saw there was not any inside brake pad. The outer brake pad seemed to be in good shape. I took to the dealer and they replaced the rear rotors and brake pads. I had to pay for the pads, GMC sent out notices to dealers that they would not cover pads past 20,000 miles. It was stated that the rotors had rusted and pitted, thus ripping the pads apart. I had my front rotors replaced on 09/13/2001. I had the same problem here. It was caught before the rotors destroyed my brake pads. Again the rotors were covered under warranty, the pads did not get replaced this time.

One right rear brake pad wore away to nothing and was grinding away at the rotor and when I called veronica perez,a g. M. Customer rep. She called ross moody to talk to the service manager and he told her that one brake pad out of eight failed because of rust. I have never before seen one brake pad go bad unless there were something wrong with the brake caliper or asembly but g. M. And the dealership are both saying nothing is wrong but I know there is. I'm retired from g. M. And can't afford to put new brakes and rotors on my vehicle in another 27,000 miles when my warranty expires and this problem happens again.
Brakes pulsate at 10 mph. Please provide additional information.

Front brake rotors and pads needed replacement at 18,000 miles. Dealer / manufacturer notified, but repairs was done at an independent repair shop. Feel free to provide us with any further details on this matter .
Front pads have never required replacement as of 102000 miles. There appears to be a very serious design flaw with the rear caliper braking system. Cause possible loss of braking and serious accident or fatalities.
While coming to a stop sign brakes would squeak.

On 10-1-99 I complained to my selling dealer about a metallic noise coming from the right side of my vehicle when I would go over a bump or back out of my driveway. I've complained numerous times since then and each time the dealer says that they can't find or duplicate the noise or they blame it on one of my aftermarket accessories. The last time I took it in on 10/16/00 the dealer told me that it was my aftermarket exhaust system making the noise. I didn't install the exhaust until 7/00 and I've complained well before this time about this noise. Well today I got under my truck to investigate for myself what could be the source of this aweful noise and that's when I discovered that both of my rear brake caliper assemblies were loose. I was able to wiggle both of them with my hand but the right rear was the loosest. At this point I decided not to touch them anymore, I considered tightening them myself but decided against that just in case anybody should wish to inspect them. I immediately went down to my selling dealer and spoke with a manager but of course they told me to bring it back in on Monday, 10/30/00 instead of immediately repairing the defect that I've complained about so many times. This is definately a safety hazzard and one can only immagine what would happen if the bolts came all the way out completely and the brakes were applied. I would like to see these trucks recalled and the brake bolt torque checked to insure that it doesn't happen to anybody else.
Since new, brake performance has been erratic in normal driving situations, varying from fair to very poor. Pedal is spongy and requires excessive travel. Pedal falls whehn stopped a lights. In normal stopping, one must keep pushing harder and harder on the pedal to maintain a constant rate of speed decrease. Ordinary stops become panic stops because braking action is not predictable. Anti-lock feature engages with slight bumps and at slow speeds, lengthening stopping distances unexpectedly.
There has been an ongoing brake problem with this vehicle. When traveling 30 - 40 mph and approaching a stop sign or light. You will get a very hard brake and go thru the intersection before the brakes actually stop the truck. This does not happen every day only occasionally, but on going the truck has been to the dealer with this same problem at 19,000 miles and they could find no problem the truck finally lost all brake power and is at the dealer now with the problem being with the hydraulics and brake booster. The dealer refused to take care of the problem because the truck has 44,000 miles on it. We first complained about this problem in Jan 99( invoice # ctcs50319), I would like this problem noted in case of a future problem with the brake system in this vehicle.

Front brakes are worn out, leaving only the back brakes to stop the vehicle. When this happens at a high speed the truck vibrates. This vehicle has had eighteen sets of brakes at owner's expense.
Excessive wear of front brakes rotors, causing vehicle to vibrate when brakes were applied. Dealer notified, and problem still occurring. Asking NHTSA to look into these matters.

Front brakes were replaced a few times. Dealer was contacted, and the problem was the fornt brakes. Took effect before the back brakes which caused the car to drop in the front when applying the brakes. Rust was inside the hub where the brake was suppose to be.

If I go to brake and the road is a tad bet bumpy the brakes do not catch and it takes a while to stop. Has happened 3 times. Didn't happen at dealers so they did nothing to fix it. Came close to hitting vehicle in front of me.
