36 Brake Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/08/2005

Truck will not come to a complete stop. I ran into another person coming to a stop. Truck will just keep rolling a little even with the brakes fully depressed. Talked to a couple of service stations and they said it was my abs sensors in the front hubs. Gm has a recall but not in my state and that is why I am filing a complaint.

37 Brake Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/04/2005

Failure of 3 brake components within 3 1/2 months, including replacement of all 4 rotors due to their having rusted out, 2 front abs sensors, and immediately thereafter we are advised that the brake lines have rusted out (not yet replaced); neither the dealer nor the manufacturer will discuss with us, state that this is environmental, notwithstanding that our other (and older) vehicles have never had anything like this; we have been stone walled by the dealer and gm. Truck is presently inoperable due to no brakes! nm.

38 Brake Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/04/2005

The consumer stated the abs activated when the brakes were applied. He felt a pulsation in the brake pedal. There were two repairs done to try to correct the problem . One repair consisted of cleaning the abs sensors. This did not correct the problem with the brakes. During the second repair the dealer replaced the abs sensor. The replacement of the abs sensor seemed to have corrected the problem. Failure Date: 09/26/2005

On September 26, 2005 the abs system locked on and the brakes pulsated when going under 10 mph. When slowing down the consumer had to increase the stopping distance, and one could hear the abs brakes kicking in. This happened every time while driving the vehicle and was getting worse. The consumer contacted the dealer, and they said that there was a recall but this vehicle was not included in the recall. The consumer had an appointment for October 12, 2005 for them to check the brakes because the consumer could not drive the vehicle like this. The consumer had an independent mechanic inspect the vehicle, and they determined that the sensors on the brakes rusted from the salt on the highways. (11/23/05).

But the state of virginia was not included in the recall. He has not yet talked to the manufacturer. Also, was having problems with the rotors. The contact had to replace the rotors at 40,000 miles about a couple of months ago.

43 Brake Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/07/2005

2000 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up has been having brake problems and is getting worse. Truck has a defect with the antilock brake sensor that is know to gm. There was an announcement on the news about a recall on brakes for gm trucks and suvs. According to information on the internet the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado is part of that recall. When I called the dealer to get it fixed they said an "official" recall hasn't been made yet. I told them that I have already been experiencing problems with the brakes and was almost in an accident due to this. They said to bring it in. When the dealership called gm for authorization to repair the vehicle gm refused to authorize truck to be repaired because "the recall is not going out until November". This is a safety issue and it needs to be addressed now. The truck is becoming unsafe to drive. Gm has already made it public that there will be a recall due to this problem. They should take responsibility for this problem and repair vehicles that are currently experiencing brake problems before someone gets into a serious accident because of it.

44 Brake Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/01/2005

The contact stated anti -lock brakes were activating at low speeds. Road salt corrosion led to false brake sensor readings, causing anti lock brakes to activate at wrong speeds. While driving in a parking lot the contact ran over a concrete parking barrier because he could not stop. The parking lot was dry. He had not contacted the manufacturer. Took vehicle to a dealership, and they were able to clean the sensors. The consumer didn't learn about the recall until after he paid for the repairs. Updated 11/29/05. Updated 11/29/05. The consumer contacted the manufacture and was told that wisconsin was excluded from the recall. The consumer was not aware of the recall until after the dealer had repair the problem. The consumer request reimbursement for the repairs.

45 Brake Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/31/2005

As an owner of a Silverado I was glad to hear about the recall due to failure of the abs system. However it was a let down to learn wisconsin trucks are not included. I have already replaced half of the sensors and need to replace the rest. I feel my truck is unsafe because of the brakes not responding as quickly as needed. I will have to replace the rotors this fall because they have rusted through. The dealer says it's because I park it outside. This has been one of the most disappointing vehicles I have ever owned.

46 Brake Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/19/2005

My 2001 Silverado sat unused for about one month. After that every time I would come to a stop the anti-lock brakes would engage at about five miles an hour. This caused me to almost have more then couple of miner crashes. The light for the anti-lock brakes did not come on at any time to indicate a problem until I pulled the fuse out to prevent the brakes from not stopping the truck. I took the truck in to a shop and had them look at the anti-lock brake system. They found rust around the sensors on the front two wheels pulled the sensors off and cleaned the rust off put the sensors back on. I have not had a problem with the anti-lock brakes going off since.

47 Brake Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/09/2005

2000 chevy Silverado brakes - vehicle has less than 50,000 miles and I started having brake problems - the brake pedal will kick back as if the abs goes on when I am stopping at a stop sign, etc -- starting occurring more frequently so I decided to change the brake pads in the rear. To my surprise the left rear rotor and backing plate were totally rusted through and that brake pad was worn down almost completely while the right rear rotor/backing plate and brake pad were almost new?? I went ahead and put on the new brake pads but this did not cure the problem. I now am going to take it in to the brake shop where I suspect I will need a new rotor/backing plate and abs sensor on the left rear. I doubt this is due to salt as if it was, it would occur on either both sides or the drivers side more than the passenger side, don't you?? as well, I live in a county that doesn't use straight salt and do little to no city driving.

48 Brake Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/09/2005

The contact states when coming to almost a complete stop the sensor that detects abs kicks in and vehicle just keeps going. This happens at low speeds of 5 mph or less. Once the abs kicks in it almost seems like vehicle accelerates. He noticed this about 2 weeks ago. Mechanic had him call the gm dealer , and they verified the problem. But because there was not a recall they could not do anything. Also called the manufacturer, and they made an appointment to diagnose the problem and go from there. When the contact bought the truck it had 19,000 miles on it. At 21,000 there were brake problems. Had new rotors/pads put on the back, resurfaced the front and put pads on the front. At 37,000 the contact was on a trip and the brakes starting clattering and screeching from the back. They told him the discs were so rusted they destroyed the brake pads, and he had to replace everything.

49 Brake Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/08/2005

After narrowly avoiding an accident, I noticed that the abs would activate in the last ten feet or so when stopping my 2000 cheverolet Silverado pickup truck. VIN 1gcek14t3yz134700. I took the truck to the gm dealership and reported the incidents and requested repair. The service department of brenengen cheverlet, west salem wisconsin found a gm bulletin on the problem and followed the instructions contained therein and cleaned the abs sensor mounts which corrected the problem. I have read in the local newspaper about a possible recall of some gm vehicles. So far this recall has not been released in the state of wisconsin, but certainly there is an ongoing problem that needs immediate attention and action to correct this problem. I am convinced from my experience, that this situation will cause or has caused many accidents/incidents in the state of wisconsin.

50 Brake Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/29/2005

I was pulling into a parking spot at a local store in crandon, wisconsin. The abs system on the truck started pulsating and never stopped until I hit the car in the parking spot in front of me, which resulted in a crash. The problem was corrected when I took it to the dealer for repair the next day in rhinelander. They said the abs sensors where corroded and need either replacement or cleaning, which is what the dealer did.

51 Brake Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/16/2005

The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado. The contact stated that when applying the brakes from 10 mph or less, the brakes would abnormally lock. The dealer recommended replacing the sensors at the contact's expense. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under an unknown recall where the dealer cleaned the brake sensors. The contact was under the impression that the brake sensors should have been replaced under the recall. The failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage was 64,000. Updated 12/01/10 updated 12/07/10.

52 Brake Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/13/2005

I have a 2000 Silverado 4x4 that has the corrosion problem with the front abs sensor, as do many other people despite gm's refusal to admit the problem in the united states. . . Somehow it evidently only happens in canada. Anyway, I cannot stop less than 7-8 mph most of the time without multiple pumps of the brakes. I dropped my truck off at serra cheverelet in hudsonville michigan this morning (to have the guy tell me "it is very rare in the us, it generally happens in northern canada" which sounded like it was straight out of a "what to say" pamphlet from gm). The dealership just told me it will be over $950 to replace the front to abs sensors and that it is needed because they can't be cleaned. Rest assured, I was told the new parts are guaranteed for life. . . Well what about the lowest-bidder crap they installed at the factory? why isn't that guaranteed for life, seeing how it's malfunction can cause life-threatening accidents. In short, please add another number to the statistics for this complaint.

53 Brake Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/10/2005

I own a 2000 chevy Silverado. While traveling at low speeds the anti-lock brake system activates which makes it harder to stop the vehicle. I have had several near misses because this defect has affected stopping distances. Gm is aware of the problem with the faulty abs sensors. I know that there was a recall in canada but they haven't done a recall in the us. I talked to a mechanic at a chevy dealership who stated that it would cost hundreds of dollars to fix the sensors. I am on a fixed income. It should be their responsibility due to the faulty sensors. This defect is jeopardizing people's lives. I can't drive my children in the vehicle because I fear for their safety.

54 Brake Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/01/2005

I currently am having problems with the abs sensor on my 2002 chevy Silverado 1500 pickup truck. I have done some research and found an investigation that is open on this problem. The truck is having the same problems as described in the investigation report, and on several occasions in the past month or so the truck has had trouble stopping. I am taking it in for service tomorrow, as there is no recall on this. I would like add my complaint to the file to make you aware of another person experiencing this problem. There are currently 45,000 miles on this truck. I am submitting 15 failures, but it has trouble almost every time I stop, and has for the past month. Unfortunately I didn't have the money to fix it until now, so I only drove it sparingly.

55 Brake Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/01/2005

The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado. The front brake anti lock sensors are sensing that the wheels are locked when braking at about 5 mph or less. If slowing down and coming to a stop sign the sensors misread the wheel. The relay goes off and cannot stop within a reasonable stopping distance. He contacted the dealer and they told him there was a service bulletin on this issue, and they would take the sensors out and clean them. This will cost a $300 and will be a temporary fix. This does not occur all time it is only happens once in a while.

56 Brake Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/23/2005

Dt: contact states: he is complaining about the abs braking problem that is currently being investigated by gm. He has had an accident involving the abs problem. He was going approx. 33 mph when he applied the brakes after slowing down to approx. 11 mph and he did not have any brakes. He glided into the car in front of him. The dealer repaired the vehicle. Gm paid for the repair cost and the rental car; but he wants the damage done to his car paid for by gm. He has had problems before this. He had new brakes and rotors put on at 45,000 miles. The anti-lock brake system (abs) failed due to corroded brake sensors.

57 Brake Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/12/2005

While pulling in to park, the abs activated and consumer crashed into the side of a building. The brake pedal eventually went to the floor but was making a clicking noise as if it were being activated. The road conditions were dry pavement with no debris or moisture. At slow speeds the brake pressure abs would come on lately. Consumer states that gm will pay for all the damages and believes instead of the gm dealer cleaning the sensors they should have replaced them with new ones and not some that will rust.

58 Brake Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/08/2005

The consumer stated that she was having a problem with 2002 Chevrolet Silverado. The abs system kicked in at low speeds of 0-10 mph. This happened when the truck was slowing down or coming to a stop. This has been happening since may 2005 intermittently. The consumer had the abs sensors cleaned, and the truck was driving much better after the cleaning. The dealer has not been contacted because the vehicle was out of warranty. The manufacturer was contacted, and they told the consumer that this truck was not included in the recall currently. General motors told the mechanic at the repair shop to just clean the sensors instead of replacing them. This was at consumer's expense.

59 Brake Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/04/2005

When the brakes were applied the vehicle's abs activated at about 5 mph, no matter the weather condition. When this occurred it was difficult to stop the truck because of the pulsation caused by the abs. Now this problem happens everything the brakes are applied. This incident occurs because dirt or rust obscures the wheel sensors located behind each brake rotor.

60 Brake Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/03/2005

I have a 2001 chevy Silverado and my abs brakes are activateing at slow speeds when comeing to a compleat stop. I have 84000 miles on my truck and I've almost rear ended the person in front of me on numerous ocations. I just read an artical in the detroit news about this problem and I wanted to tell you my truck is also haveing the abs problem. I am hopeing for a recall on the abs sensors!.

61 Brake Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/29/2005

Abs system on 2001 Silverado 4x4 began coming on at low speeds with only gentle braking. Caused stopping distances to be much greater, causing overshoot of stop signs. No accident was involved. Had repaired at gm dealer, said abs sensors were corroded and had to replace ($600+ dollars). Vehicle only has 40k miles on it.

62 Brake Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/08/2005

The abs malfunctioned. The system engaged without cause, resulting in the service brakes not working when depressed. When this occurred, the consumer has to pump the brake pedal several times to stop the vehicle. The dealership indicated that this occurred because the sensor on the front wheels gets corroded, causing the system to mis read. Therefore the system indicates that the vehicle is on ice when it isn't and the abs engages. The dealership cleaned the front wheel sensor assembly. The dealership indicated that there's a recall on this problem but only for vehicles assembled in canada. Consumer concern when coming to a stop the abs system will activate caused by unwanted abs activation.

63 Brake Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/07/2005

Contact states: having problems with the braking system on a gm pickup truck. Abs system keeps acting up. Dealer is not helpful at all. When he presses on brakes abs sensors kick in, and takes away all of the power from the brakes , and vehicle accelerates throughout the intersections.

64 Brake Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/01/2005

I own a 1999 chevy Silverado. The abs sensor went bad and I was told it would be $1000 to fix this. Outrageous! I did more research and found that this problem is common and gm is doing nothing about it. I read that they recalled all trucks with same problem in canada, but not here. This is a safety concern because my abs does not work, and the abs motor runs, which is a fire concern. Next, with winter driving coming soon, this is a major concern to not have abs. This problem should be recalled and fixed at gm's expense.

65 Brake Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 03/17/2005

From November, 2004 until fixed in March, 2005 had repetitive episodes where anti-lock brakes came on at low speeds of around 7-8 mph. This led to several very near accidents on the military base I work, parking lots and on the city roads. Luckily no one was ultimately injured before the problem was figured out to be the anti-lock brake system sensors. They were fixed by dealer at price of $598. 40. A recall was released on this problem in canada and in the us (gm recall 05068) in December, 2005. This vehicle was purchased from o'connor Chevrolet in rochester, NY in November, 2003. A claim was filed with Chevrolet (file #1-409354542) and was denied because the vehicle was not purchased by me in canada and I didn't live in canada. This vehicle was purchased from a Chevrolet dealer in new york state with a now known defect that nearly caused several accidents to me and my family and now Chevrolet will not pay for the repair stating it is not covered by the us recall. If it is the same defect in all the vehicles and the truck was purchased from a chevy dealer it should be honored. Chevy nearly killed me and my kids several time by their negligence in manufacturing and should pay for the repair needed to fix their faulty product.

66 Brake Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 03/15/2005

The exact problem you describe in investigation #pe05-020. I came within inches of hitting a parked car. I spent $266. 30 to have the abs sensors cleaned. This should require a recall: this is a very serious problem.

67 Brake Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 03/10/2005

Prior to the crash I'll describe, I noticed that the antilock brakes on my truck would engage randomly at low speeds, even though the road was clear and dry. I never received any indication from indicator lights or the truck's status display that there was a malfunction in progress. Until the incident below, braking control always returned within a few seconds and seemed to pose no safety threat. On this particular evening, they had performed without incident all the way home from work. I pulled into my driveway and into my garage. Upon entering the garage proper, the antilock brakes engaged. The garage floors (and driveway) were both clear of any snow, ice, or liquids. When the antilock brakes took control, it released the brakes and locked the brake pedal in such a way that I could not regain control. This time, I was unable to push the pedal down. My vehicle subsequently stuck the workbench along the back wall of my garage. The impact pushed the entire garage wall out almost 12 inches, including the cement block foundation. Fortunately, there was no damage to the vehicle. However, the damage to the garage remains. To correct the failure, a mechanic at a local dealership removed the fuse that controls the antilock brake functions, essentially disabling the antilock system. Due to the nature and location of the antilock sensors (in the wheel bearings), repairs are not financially feasible at this time. The truck's brakes function normally with the antilock system disabled. I believe that this complaint directly relates to NHTSA action number pe05020.

68 Brake Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/28/2005

Consumer states: when pulling out from stop light or stop sign the brakes kick in. Only happens getting ready to stop. Makes a chattering noise. The sensor is calling for the abs system when it doesn't need the abs system.

69 Brake Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/18/2005

The contact stated the abs sensor has been replaced twice. This failure almost caused two accidents. Both abs sensors malfunctioned within 10,000 miles. The dealership replaced the first sensor because it was oxidized to the hub assembly. The second sensor was cleaned. There was a NHTSA recall campaign 05v379000 concerning the anti lock brakes, but the contact's state was not included in the recall. The tire were cupped and had to be replaced due to a vibration coming from the vehicle. Updated 01/11/06.

70 Brake Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/07/2005

My 2000 Silverado pickup truck had the bad brake sensor in the front wheel. As I would roll to a stop the abs system would activate and I would have to push on the brake pedal with both feet to stop. I never got in an accident, but had several scary moments before the truck stopped. I got the sensor replaced and it fixed the problem gm should have covered the repair, it is a bad safety issue.
