For quite some time, our 2005 Chevrolet Silverado would have an odor and the #5 position on the fan for heater would stop working, then start again. Recently it completely stopped at all levels. We can no longer circulate heat or ac in the vehicle. We checked the blower motor resistor unit, it had melted and also melted the wiring harness up under the dash. We now have to replace both units at great expense to us. , not to mention this could have caused a fire. . . We usually have some grandchildren strapped in car seats. . . Which would have been quite dangerous to them, had it caught on fire. This has been going on for some time, not just the mileage indicated.

My speedometer needle started to stick on a higher speed and not come down. It would return to zero if I started and stopped the engine multiple times. This condition gradually worsened until it was stuck on "pegged", even when parked. I had no idea how fast I was going. Also, the speed control would not engage. I had to stop the vehicle and turn off the engine, then proceed before it would work again. I took it to the dealer for the speedometer. They were aware of the speedometer problem and one person insinuated it was a very common problem. They replace the "cluster" (?). They would not allow me to have the old parts and charged me $450. 00! I speak for myself and others with this problem,"we need help!".
: the contact stated while driving 10mph in rush hour traffic the dashboard lights failed to illuminate. Afterwards, the service engine soon light illuminated and the transmission locked up which caused the vehicle to stall. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop. Upon inspection the mechanic determined there was a short circuit in the fuses under the dash. Although, the components in the transmission burned there were no fire. The transmission was rebuilt, but the service engine soon light still illuminated. The vehicle is being inspected to determine the exact cause.

After 15 months of operation, the speedometer started acting strangely and finally failing completely after 18 months. The vehicle was well under warranty. Took it in and the dealer said that they had to backorder and the new speedometer would be in within a couple of weeks. That was 5 months ago. Still no resolve to the problem. I haven't had a speedometer in 5 months. When I complained to gm, they said they would give me 12,000 miles and/or 1 year extra of warranty. What actually happened is they started the 12mos / 12,000 miles at that particular moment which decreases my originally warranty by 1 month and 4500 miles.
Instrument cluster on 2004 Chevrolet 2500 hd starts going out and the speedometer and tachometer cannot be depended on. When this is happening and you have the cruise control on who knows how fast you are really going. I feel there should be a recall since chevy has them designed to where they generally go out just as the warranty goes out. Why should we wait until this causes a wreck.
The contact stated the speedometer stopped working without warning. He took the vehicle to a local dealership to be checked. They determined the instrument cluster panel was faulty. This caused the speedometer to malfunction. He contacted the manufacturer, and they approved the repairs to be made without cost to the contact.
The contact states he was working on a vehicle in customer car shop in miami. He was taking the doors off when within 15 minutes to a 1/2 hour he smelled smoke. The whole dashboard underneath the steering wheel was on fire. Everything under the hood caught on fire. The fire spread from the dashboard to the back of the car. The fire department seem to think it was electrical. The whole shop burned down because of the vehicle fire. The fire department was called. Two fire marshals came and they questioned the wiring. The police department was also called. This happened on 9-22-05.

Trailer brake wiring harness. I recently purchased a trailer which required a electronic brake. After having the braking system installed by the manufacturer of the trailer I was informed of the problem with the braking harness on the vehicle. I then called the dealer for more information, they recommended I take it to another trailer dealer and have it looked at. That's when I found out that the wiring harness was only receiving 4 volts, the braking system requires 12 volts.
The connector to the fan blower motor resistor burned up and melted on my 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The technician that worked on this vehicle said that the connector shorted out, causing the resistor plug to burn up. He also stated that this was common in certain gm vehicles. Chevrolet said there was no problem.
The dash board cluster went out and the truck is only a year old, the expense and the delay in getting it fixed due to the back log of clusters needing repaired. It took seven days for the part to come in.
Speedometer has quite working. The odometer all other instrument panel gauges work.

Vehicle shifted very hard, and there was an incident of shutting down. Also, dashboard lights flashed on and off. Dealer could not duplicate the problem.
Gas gauge has started to act up - bounces around, dumps down to empty and low fuel sensor light in dash comes on even though tank may be full. Began doing this after 60,000 miles. Did have it do this once before but did not repeat until recently so I never had it checked out. I have been to my mechanic (who's GMC truck is also doing the same thing) and was told this is a common problem.
The vehicles gauges did not work at all. The dealer inspected the vehicle and could not duplicate or correct the problem.

1998 Silverado ext. Cab - the vehicle had been sitting all afternoon of 10/24 and all night. Friday morning at about 6:15 I heard a horn blowing. I went outside to investigate and found the interior of my truck on fire. I have pictures (if you would like to see them). It is obvious that the fire started in the dash to left of the steering wheel. That section of the dash was melted beyond recognition. The windshield blew in the left hand corner and the driver's side window also blew. The left side of the steering wheel completely melted and the drivers seat was burnt to the floor. The rest of the interior burned also, but the heaviest burning was the front drivers side. The truck was deemed totaled. There is not doubt that the fire started in the left dash near the fuse door. I was told that there had been a recall for this problem, but I never received anything about it. If the melting plastic on the steering wheel had not set the horn off, we would have lost our home. Can you give me any information about this. I would be glad to send you the pictures if you like. Dt.

While driving, heavy smoke came from dash. I pulled off to the side of the road. When I looked under the dash I could see wires melted together coming from the brake light sending unit. It melted up into the main wire harness. I unplugged the wires , burning my hand. If I would not of, I believe the truck would have caught on fire!.
Two dealerships have told me dash cluster needs to be replaced.

Our truck was parked in our driveway. We had been home for about 2 hours after driving the truck. It caught fire and exploded. The fire dept said the it started in the dash under the steering column, probably resulting from faulty wiring. We have had this truck for 4 months and it only had 9000 miles on it. We have never had anything go wrong with it until now and this is major. The truck is totally destroyed, another car was damaged and the siding of our house had damage. Are there any other reports of this?.
Around 1:30 a. M. Truck caught fire in driveway while no one was driving vehicle. Fire was so intense, it melted the back window. Dealer said it was somewhere in the dashboard.
Front end has been vibrating since purchase of vehicle, dealer has replaced front end twice/ dashboard twice, and transfer case 3 times. Went to different dealers 11 times. Could not remedy problems. Chevrolet first agreed to buy vehicle back, then changed mind. Independent mechanic felt that problem had to do with driveline. Vehicle was at dealer 85 days first year. Please add additional information.
Chasis / rear main-has and does have a loud klunking noise on take off and slow acceleration. I have taken it (the truck) to the dealership for repair which did not fix the problem. The second problem with the instrument panel - the glass cover to the istrument cluster cracked. The third problem with the console - the key which was issued with truck would not unlock center console lid , but would unlock clove box, had to bust lid open to gain access.
