9 Engine problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/07/2005

Cold engine start-up knock. I own a 2002 Silverado z71 with the 4. 8 engine. The engine has had cold start-up knock since I have owned it. I have asked dealers about it and have been told it is normal. I build engines for and own to drag cars. One is an et footbrake car with a mild 350 ci small block chevy. The other is a 48 fiat altered with a 434 ci small block chevy stroker. Both have forged pistons and neither has the cold piston noise that this bone stock 4. 8 has. I currently have 39,139 miles on my truck and want it to last as long as possible. Under the current circumstances, I don't think it will last much longer before it cracks a piston skirt or severely damages the cylinder walls. It is my intention to contact Chevrolet in the next couple of days but after reading the complaints on this site, I am prepared to be told the same as the dealer told me. I am also looking into the class action suit approach to get a remedie to the problem. Another issue is the brakes. The truck has 4 wheel disk and stops like it has four wheel drums without power?? I owned a 97 sivlverado that had brakes that worked the same. You would think that a truck that cost 30,000 dollars would be a little better constructed.

11 Engine problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/27/2004

Knock in motor of 2002 chevy Silverado, 5. 3 motor with 30,000 miles. Dealer says knock is normal. Chevrolet sent letter to me stating they will provide service coverage for engine till 100,000 miles, but knock is normal. They claim that this is full coverage parts and labor but won't send letter stating full coverage only that they are pleased to provide coverage. Sounds fishy! the knock continues to last longer on cold start and gets louder by the week.

12 Engine problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/04/2004

My 5. 3 liter Silverado has a diesel like noise in the motor until it reaches normal running temperature, then it runs great. Its very loud the first 30 secs. From a cold start. My local gm garage said that is normal for a 4. 8 and a 5. 3 motor. They called it piston slapping, to me it is very abnormal. And will it get worse, I asked. They had no answer. They did comment that gm has not resolved this bulletin yet. I love my truck, I hope I get 200k miles out of it. Now I only have 50k . What's a person to do if the maker of his favorite auto can't come through with a resolution. It also affects resale value if I decide to sell.

Refused to provide correction for problem and stated that it is a major problem. (not dealer where purchased).

17 Engine problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/26/2003

The engine consumed an excessive amount of oil. The dealer had inspected the vehicle several times, and could not duplicate or correct the problem. If engine stops running because of lack of oil, the steering and brakes would lock resulting in a collision.

18 Engine problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/10/2003

Last year my truck started developing a pause in the engine. I had my local dealer investigate the problem. They stated the fuel injectors needed cleaned so they put in an additive. They stated that the problem was normal after 15,000 miles. A little while longer my wife was driving me to the airport (two hours from my home) during the trip the truck started making the same noise and having the same hesitation problems but with a little more vengeance. When we arrived a the airport we had turned the vehicle off so that I could unload my travel bags. My wife tried to start the truck to leave and could not get it going. I had to leave to catch my flight leaving my wife at the curb with a defective vehicle. I did give her the information for roadside assistance. She contacted roadside help and the truck was towed to a local dealer. They were not able to get the vehicle started and fixed so they got my wife a rental and arrangements were made for the dealer to fix the truck and I would return after my trip to pick it up. During the time I had been gone I had found out through my wife that the dealer felt there was a cracked block and would have the truck fixed for me. On my arrival back in indianapolis I made my way to the dealer. Thinking I had a somewhat new engine. In fact I was told that their prognosis was wrong and that it was just a oxygen sensor that had failed. It was good as new! well here I am not even a year later and having the same problems. This time with all three kids and my wife in the truck and returning from toledo. 30 minutes on the side of the road at night, until it started and limped it home.

19 Engine problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 03/28/2003

My 2002 chev truck knocks when I start the engine. (6. 0) most chev trucks do this. The dealer told me it was normal. I would like to have them around when I try and sell the truck. The noise came after the truck was only 4 months old. It has been getting worse and worse. My resale value is going to suck. If it is normal, I told them they should advertise it in their tv commercial. Chev trucks, like a rock, and sound like a rock shaking in a tin can.

31 Engine problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/20/2001

Cold start knock or piston slap. My 2001 Silverado 6. 0l sounds like a diesel when I start it up. Problem began at 11,000 miles. Now have 18,400 miles. - piston slap is louder and more persistent. Gm has acknowledged problem, issued service request #, but no service and no response. Very disappointed in gm customer service and product. Gm should remedy huge engineering mistake and fix these engines or buy vehicles back!.

32 Engine problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/15/2001

We purchased our 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 new. Right around the 15,000 mile mark we noticed a slight tapping in the engine. This seemed to only occur on start up and mostly in the morning when cold. It would tap for several seconds and then dissipate. Initially we thought it was a lifter, but we have since come to find out it is not. The overall diagnosis is gm piston slap. This occurs when the pistons are ill fitted to the cylinder walls, and hence you get the noise. We were told it was nothing to be concerned about. Gm knows of the problem (well they don't call it a problem), but refuse to do anything about it. They say they have tested these engines thoroughly and the piston slap causes no long term engine problems. The noise not only began to get louder, but also became non stop. It did not go away, and now we have to listen to it all the time. After repeated trips to the dealership for recording of this problem, we still have no resolution. And they have now put us off long enough that the factory warranty has expired. I must say that gm knows how to give you the run around. There is even a website dedicated to this such problem. .
