Chevrolet Silverado owners have reported 56 problems related to other fuel system fuel gauge (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Gas guage appears to have a short in it,when tank is fullit jumps back and forth. Truck had 89k at that time to replace it it was quoted 350-400. This appears to be a lemon in workmanship,or poor quaility material. I have spook with other who have the same problem.

Faulty fuel gauge, jumps from full to empty when truck is idleing and during driving. Talked with other owners and to large companies that use chevy trucks and found out that this problem only exist with the chevy's and not GMC counter part. There should be a recall on this since this problem has been addressed since 1998. The dealership told me it was afuel pump issue.
Fuel gauge does not work. After filling up gas tank, low fuel warning light comes on. Gauge goes from full to empty. Fuel gauge is unreliable. If trip odometer is not reset at time of fill-up, I have no idea how much fuel I have left in tank. If I miscalculate, I could run out of gas without notice and this could cause a dangerous situation.
Check engine light comes on when fuel tank is more than half full.

Abs module bad, no antilock brakes, the abs light on dash is on constantly. Dealer says part is $800 and only availaible at gm. Same with fuel pump/sending unit, $350 only availiable gm, steering column knocks, both support cables on tailgate bad although recall coming too little too late, and the throttle body sticks are closed.
The fuel gauge shows that the truck is on empty which also makes the low fuel light to come on. The truck has either a full tank of gas or has plenty of gas. The dealership said it was a problem with the fuel sensor and acted like it is very common. I have also talked to other owners that have the same complaint.
The fuel gauge did not work. The dealer inspected the vehicle, but could not duplicate or correct the problem.

Emergency brake do not function properly. As a result, the vehicle will roll on an incline. Problems with the fuel gauge. Spare tire hoist did not work properly.
I had two inside door panel replaced already. These two things were fixed from the engine compartment, it gets worse when it is colder. Fuel gauge is inaccurate and jumps around when truck is not in a moving gear. I am very upset about the last two, because chevy says the truck is working within "normal chevy parameter". I have asked many mechanics and they say either one should be happening. The date below is an approximate time the last two started. I also have had it in twice for both of these problems.
Fuel gauge stopped working .
Consumer states that vehicle gas gauge stopped working. Vehicle has been at the dealer several times.

Beginning spring 2004, the fuel gauge in our 2001 chevy pick-up began suddenly dropping to empty reading/low fuel indicator lights despite having a full tank of fuel. It is intermittent, dropping to empty then jumping back up to correct reading. I have taken it to a dealer for diagnosis and hopeful repair and was told the fuel tank sending unit is to blame. They also tested the wiring between the sending unit and fuel gauge and the gauge itself. It is scheduled for replacement (sending unit), but as I thought about this, it seemed an odd thing to have break in such a young vehicle (41k miles). I began researching recall information online, but have found it for only the Jeep wrangler and Nissan xterra. This is a pricey repair to be so common but not acknowledged as a manufacturer's defect.
Consumer had taken vehicle into dealer for routine maintenance and was told that vehicle had a cracked frame. Abs module failed. Sending unit module failed.
Vehicle would not start. There was a fire in lower gas tank float, wires were burned. Please provide additional information.

There is a chronic fuel level sending unit failure, fuel gauge fails. This unit located in the fuel tank fails due to "contaminated fuel in the area attacking and corroding the unit causing it to fail. " this is the same response dealers are instructed to give when customers complain about this problem. I have heard this from different parts of the country from dealers from el paso, texas to northern new mexico.
The contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado. Whenever the contact drove various speeds, he heard a squeaking sound coming from the front passenger side suspension. The sound has been present ever since the vehicle was purchased. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 114,000. Updated 8/7/09 the consumer stated the right front upper control arm was the reason for the noise. Also, the gas gauge malfunctioned. It would come on and go off reading low fuel. Updated 08/11/09.
Fuel gauge sensor/float failed. Yh.

2001 Silverado 4-wheel drive truck with gas gauge fluctuated when the gas tank fell below half full. * the consumer was told she would need to purchase an entire module which included a fuel pump because according to the two Chevrolet dealerships the consumer went to, in order to get to the gas gauge, the fuel pump would have to be removed so the dealer would just replace everything as a module.
The fuel gauge did not register the correct amount of gas in the fuel tank. When coming to a complete stop the gauge went to zero.
