When applying the brake the power assist steering fades to nothing after 1/8 turn making it almost impossible to manuver. The power steering pump and gearbox were replaced, the problem still exist . I have had the steering wheel jerk going around curves and having to apply the brake also. I believe this is a definite safety hazzard. Gm states that this is just caracteristic of this truck, I do not feel it makes it ok. Something needs to be re-engineered so that the power asist is at constant pressure. I am told by manufacturer that no one has been hurt so there is no problem. It should not come to that. If I, as a business owner produce a product that has a definite problem I cannot tell my customers that is just characteristic of my work, too bad, so why can gm do that? I would appreciate your assistance in reviewing this situation. Thank you, bruce a. Quigley.

When at a stop consumer cannot turn steering wheel to right unless there is momentum. This started happening approximately 2 weeks ago. Dealership could not reproduce this problem. Also, consumer was informed that this vehicle was not included in recall 98v242000 related to steering.
At approximately 24,000 miles the steering column developed a rattle that was louder when turning or driving on bumpy road. Dealership replaced the intermediate steering module at approximately 26,000 miles. The same behavior began occuring at approximately 50,000 miles. Mechanic indicates that the intermediate steering module has excessive play. Manufacturer does not acknowledge a problem, and I have stopped doing business with the dealership because of shody service.
Intermediate shaft on steering had to be replaced twic. . It caused vibration of steering column and noise while turning and during slowdown of vehicle. At this time part has to be replaced a third time.
Consistantly had a problem in the steering column, replaced three intermediate shafts and a steering box. Still a friction/vibration noise in the steering when moving at a slower speed, causing a loud squealing noise.

Steering gear box failure. Steering action very loose in left/right turns with excessive steering column vibration. Dealership stated that this is a common problem with 1999 Silverados. Dealer replaced gear box. Steering is now very tight. . . Almost too tight.
While making right or left turns there was thumping vibration. Mechanic stated there was a recall on lower steering shaft; however, consumer's vehicle was not included due to VIN.
Steering gear box came loose while driving. Would make noises & wobble around. Gear box was not secured to frame. Taken vehicle twice to dealership for repairs. Would hold for a few days & come loose. Problem not solved. Recall #98v242000 was issued on that make/model. But not this vehicle was not included due to VIN.
