Steering Rack And Pinion Problems of Chevrolet Silverado

Electric power steering failed while driving. Truck towed to a dealer. After replacing the electric power steering motor, electrical loom and the battery, was informed that the steering rack failed - possibly due to water penetration into the rack and pinion drive. Suspect a faulty or badly designed seal which may be the cause for thie failures on the 2014 Silverado trucks.

While driving and making left or right turns at any speed steering wheel locked. Consumer lost the control of vehicle. Dealer indicated determined that rack and pinion failed. Consumer called Chevrolet customer assistance, and was told to fix the vehicle at own expense. If vehicle was recalled, consumer would be reimbursed at a later time.

Rack&pinion steering was leaking and causing rapid/uneven front tire wear at 13000 mi. Dealer replaced with remanufactured part that is now leaking again at 18000 mi. And is now making growling noise. Dealer refused to align vehicle or replace either badly worn tire. Defective rack & pinion caused loss of power steering fluid creating danger of loss of steering had it not been discovered.

Steering wheel shakes at 64 mph and now since they so called repaired it : it shakes also at 70mph. Chevrolet has not yet been able to repair the problem after truck has been in shop 8 times. Now they are avoiding us regarding the problems.

After sitting over night you take vehicle on highway it will begin shimming lightly and then build up until the wheel shakes violently. If you try to brake it gets worse. When you pull it off road and start up the shimmy usually goes away. It is lucky we haven't been killed. I have been told by the dealer that other trucks have had the same problem. One driver recorded this on tape. Another dealer in the area is also having this problem the dealer and company cannot find out what is wrong. The last time the dealer had the truck for 2 weeks. They have been playing with it since March. Gen motors has been no help. Their tac has no answer, yet I am stuck with this problem. What does it take? my wife and I to be killed? she will not drive it .

The 1999 chev. Silverado with rack and pinion has many problems and g-m is trying to sweep it under the rug. For verification of the problem contact gene scott at hudiburg Chevrolet at 817. 498. 2400 as general motors has bought back 4 of these vehicles from their customers and know that they have the problem. I have problems with mine but they are giving me the run around.

Consumer called complaining about having problems with rack and pinion bracket.

General motors notified me that the bushings in the lower control arm and the bushings in the rack and pinion needed to be replaced to correct a serious vibration problem . There is also a gm service bulletin containing this information. These two conponents are part of the "steering". Gm has informed me that they will not replace these bushings a the present time. Having a defective steering assembly causes a safety problem for me and my family. Any other required documentation I will be glad to provide.

This vehicle is included in recall 98v342000/ steering gar bolts failure. Parts that are needed are not available. Dealer was notified about the recall in September 2000.

Vehicle lost power steering upon making a left turn. Recall 03v527000 was issued on the steering gear bearing, but this vehicle was not included in the recall due to VIN and model year.

While driving 60-65 mph extreme vibration occurred within the steering wheel. Dealer replaced the tires, which did not correct the problem. This problem occurred due to a malfunction within the rack and pinion assembly. Please give any further details.
