7 Steering Column problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 03/13/2010

About a year and a half ago I started hearing and feeling a light knocking in my steering column when I would make a turn. It took several months for it to get consistent for anyone else to hear it then it began to get a lot worse. I took it by my mechanic and he told me that it was in the steering. He said that they use to just lube them again but now you have to order a kit from the manufacture. He knew what the problem was immediately after driving it through the parking lot because he had the very same problem on his chevy truck in the past and had seen several others since then. He informed me it was safe to drive for now and I have yet to get it fixed. You can tell it is a lubrication problem because it is not as noticeable in the winter vs. The summer when it is hotter and the lube flows more freely. Now I see the same complaint on here and other web sites regarding this same problem and that it will keep happening over and over. The knocking has become very loud when I make a turn either way now. If this is a known problem with this model then why has it not been recalled? especially if a owner has to continually have it fixed after every 10-20 thousand miles. I am afraid that if it is not fixed soon I may lose control of the steering. I have also noticed a lot of wear on my tires that should not be there after keeping it continually maintained. My truck is five years old but it only has around 25,000 miles on it. Please I urge you to look into this problem before someone does end up hurt.

8 Steering Column problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/01/2009

2004 Chevrolet Silverado. . . The steering column makes a horrible clunking noise. We have had it replaced several times under warranty but now there's no warranty and these parts and labor are too expensive to fix. The dealer says and I know from owning another 2003 Chevrolet suburban than this is a major problem with these year model trucks and suvs. We shouldn't have to pay for something they can obviously see is wrong! sometimes it feels like the steering is not acting right because of it and I feel unsafe driving in these conditions. Please help!!!!.

11 Steering Column problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/20/2007

There hasn't been an accident or any injury (yet) but steering related issues concern me and I don't know what could happen if left too long. The steering column makes thumping and chattering noises. This will be the third time it needs to be repaired, first at 35k, gm replaced under warranty, second at 51k, the dealer just removed some steering shaft and greased it, now it's doing it again at 65k. I haven't had it fixed yet, I don't drive it everyday, but I'm willing to bet the dealer will want to replace it this time.

14 Steering Column problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/25/2007

Intermediate steering column, clunking noise radiating up through the steering column, very pronounced when turning the vehicle, noise has become worse and owner is annoyed and concerned about the safety of the vehicle. Contacting the dealer, they want to charge for the diagnosis of the problem. Dealer has also stated that the intermediate steering shaft is not covered under warranty. The problem was present when I bought the vehicle. I thought it was the shock absorbers on the front and had no desire to have the same 'cheap' shocks replaced. Upon my obtaining four kyb brand shock absorbers and installing them, it became apparent to me that there was a different problem. After some research, I found a 'service bulletin' concerning the problem. Upon talking to the dealer and a factory representative, I realized that they did not give a darn - they refuse to replace the intermediate steering column. I have since learned that this is a problem with not only my vehicle 'type' but also many other gm vehicle 'types. '.

28 Steering Column problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/11/2005

Steering column intermediate shaft fails approximately every 30,000 miles. First failed at 30k, second 60k, third 100k. Failure starts with light clunking sound and progresses to loud clunk and looseness in steering wheel. The dealer and gm acknowledge a problem including even the 2005 models. The quality of steering fell gets quite vague if not replace before noise gets loud.

29 Steering Column problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/26/2005

In September 2003, I purchased a2003 Chevrolet Silverado z71. On February 6, 2005, I had to have a "lube pack" replaced on the steering column. Everytime I turned the steering wheel, a loud noise was heard. On September 26, 2005, I had to have the "lube pack" replaced again, for the same reason. I took the vehicle in to the dealer again several months ago and I complained about the same noise. He told me, after checking it, that it would be best if I waited a little longer, because gm would only replace the "lub pack" one more time at their cost. After searching for similar problems on the web site, I see I am not the only person having this problem; many other purchasers of gm trucks are having the problem and it has been occurring since 1999. I was under the impression that part of nhts's job was to investigate and see that corrective action was taken so that the safety of drivers and passengers was insured. It also appears that no one, especially nhts, knows whether this steering problem constitutes a dangerous condition. I realize that a recall of vehicles to fix the problem would be most expensive for gm, which is having financial problems at this time, but gm is responsible for doing nothing about a problem that could be a serious one, even if just one life is lost because of it.

30 Steering Column problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

33 Steering Column problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/25/2005

The steering wheel on my 1998 Silverado was able to turn without the wheels turning. Taking my truck to a local garage for a cause it was detected that the bolt in the steering column was missing. I had the bolt installed and the problem was solved. I contacted the customer service department of gm and did not receive a reason why did could happen in a car I bought and was the sole owner. I also told them that I believe it to be a safety item and that a notice should be issued to other owners. The response I received was that I did not have the vehicle brought to their shops and therefore could not comment on what the problem was,or that they would do anything about it. They also said that they would not issue a bulletin as I had not brought it into one of their shops and they could not determine the cause. I also said I would not drive 27 miles to the dealer as I could have an accident. My concern is that they really had no concern for my problem and if this problem was occurring on other vehicles like mine. Thank you for listening to my concern and I hope that this not cause anyone any accidents. I was not aware that there was an agency like yours until I read this mornings paper. I would appreciate knowing if there are other concerns as mine or am I the only one. It was very disturbing to find out I had that bolt missing. Martin witkowski.

34 Steering Column problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/20/2005

Owner - 02 chev Silverado pickup - VIN 2gcek19v121210683. Recently, I begin to detect a clunking noise coming from the steering column. At times, you could actualy feel this through the steering wheel. I checked several on line consumer sites and discovered this is a documented problem w/ several types of gm vehicles. When I contacted several gm dealerships, I was informed they were aware of this complaint. When I questioned the dealerships further, they informed gm had issued service bulletins on this issue and had also revised the intermediate steering shafts design and replacement shafts are on back order. When I contacted gm,they contend, this is not a safety issue, but readily admited the original design has problem. Gm also contends it is not unsafe, nor are the shafts under recall consideration. I question gms views on this issue. Are these steering shafts being tested or reviewed for possible safety defects? the noise in my vehicle became so unnerving, I decided to have the shaft replaced, rather then chance a failure while oprating the vehicle.

35 Steering Column problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/15/2005

After purchasing (and returning!) a 2005 chevy Silverado pu I contacted the dealer about the off center steering wheel. He acted like he had no idea they were like that (and they've been for years!) so he allegedly called the factory to find out why and told me it's a safety feature!!! this is so bogus ! if it is a safety feature - why aren't the cars off center? why doesn't Ford and Dodge make theirs like that? this truck was a nightmare to drive - specifics: horse trailer swayed when pulled w/this truck. It hydroplained in the slightest amount of water. When pulling on the freeway, semi's would literally blow me to the other side of the lane! I have witnesses to how scary this truck was to drive or ride in!!! someone needs to investigate this off center steering wheel thing!!! a Dodge dealer told me he thinks it's a manufacturer defect they're just trying to cover up!!! most people don't even notice it! it took me 3 days to figure out what was so strange about that truck. I took it to another dealer to have things fixed and they had it a whole day and fixed nothing! there's a lot more to this if you 'd like to contact me!.
