2 Steering Gear Box Sector Shaft problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/03/2006

2003 Chevrolet Silverado hd, every year since I have had this truck, I had to have the steering gear box shaft sector lubed and once replaced. Just had this done again two days ago. This is an irritating problem since when it is going bad or needs lubed, it has a clunking noise in the front end and don't know whether this is a safety factor or not. So far I have been lucky and not had to pay for the repair but have been told that if it happens over a year after last repair, I will be responsible. This is a factory defect and I don't believe anyone should have to pay to have it done. I have had other chevy's and other makes of trucks and have never had this problem.

3 Steering Gear Box Sector Shaft problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/14/2006

When I bought my 04 Silverado truck used in February of this year I noticed a klunking in the steering. After getting it checked out I found out that it was the upper intermediate steering shaft. My father-in-law bought an 02 and had the same problem. Well after doing some research I found out that this is a huge problem with the 01-05 Silverados. I have spoken to other owners about this and a couple have said that gm said that its not a safety issue so they wouldn't fix it. They make a replacement for this shaft but it is $92 and then they have to put it in. I think that if it is a problem that is this big that they should fix it for free. I just want to make it known that we the gm owners are getting shafted you could say and they don't care. I wanted to see what I could do to try to get them to help us out.

8 Steering Gear Box Sector Shaft problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/26/2005

I along with 4 close friends each individually oun 2003 Chevrolet 2500hd pick up trucks. All of us have had a steering problem stemming from a steering component called the "intermediate steering shaft" all of my friends have had their shafts changed out under Chevrolets factory warranty. I was not able to have mine covered because I am outside of the warranty milage, however I did have the problem diagnosed by my local dealer and was confirmed that the intermediate shaft was bad. I do not know what this shaft does but I am terrified to drive my truck in fear of my steering shaft breaking and falling out. Chevrolet has refused to cover this part as a good faith repair so I am looking into making this a recall situation due to the number of warranty repairs they make on these trucks.

12 Steering Gear Box Sector Shaft problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/15/2004

Along with at least a dozen other complaints filed with NHTSA I also have concerns with the intermediate steering shaft sectoron my 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd making a rattling , clicking noise espically when turning. What is the criteria to get gm to announce a recall? I feel this should be addressed before more serious consequences occur. So far I have made an appointment with the dealer and was told they would look at it and possibly replace the sector or place a lubrication kit in it. In reading other complaints it doesn't sound like this resolves the problem. My vehicle is out of warranty but this has been ongoing before the warranty expiration. I would be happyto allow and encourage you to forward this to gm for action.

14 Steering Gear Box Sector Shaft problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/04/2004

Continued knocking from steering column. Truck was taking to dealer under warranty where the claimed that the noise was from the upper intermediate shaft lack of grease. They then greased the shaft which worked long enought to take the car out of warranty. Now the knocking is back and gm now saids that the shaft they greased needs to be replaced with an updated one. All gm did was to rigged this steering shaft long enought to take it out of warranty. They now want several hundred dollars for repairs. Also the engine in this truck knocks and pings like a diesel. I have to use premium gas and the knocking and pinging is getting worse. Gm claims this noise is normal for this engine and brushed me off saying they could do nothing about it, its normal.
