The windshield wipers on my 1998 Chevrolet Silverado pickup don't work all the time. The wiper motor appears to be the same as the 1997 Chevrolet pickup for which a recall has been issued.

While parked on the street, locked and not in use for 7 days, a fire apparently started in the windshield wiper motor. It was significantly damaged and spread to the right front wheel well and left front bumper cowling, before it was put out with a fire extinguisher. The gm investigator has indicated that it is their determination that the problem started external to the vehicle.

Windshield wiper failure when it rains a lot. According to the dealer I need to pay $190. 00 plus tax. To replace a circuit board and cover. Which I think is a manufacturer responsibility. Parts dept clerk told me he was aware of the problem on older trucks. But thought the problem was fixed on the newer trucks.

The contact owned a 1997 Chevrolet, Silverado 3500. He stated that there were NHTSA recalls 03v159000 and 03v210000, but this vehicle was not included in the recalls due to VIN. On July 30, 2005 while in a rain storm windshield wipers quit 4 times. Also, this happened again on July 31,2005.

My 1997 Chevrolet Silverado p/u has a problum with the wipers they work some of the time and some of the time they do not work at all. Your web site says there is a recall for this problum (03v15900 your recall #) and when I contacted gm about it I was told by chris lamar that there was and to take to my local Chevrolet dealer for repair and then was told was not going to happen . Contacted gm once again and mr. L amar said it did not cover my truck but in the first conversation with him he said that all gm full size p/u were recalled for the 97 model year from start of production to the end of production. When I spoke to his supervisor she said that because the truck was not purchased from a Chevrolet dealer that they would not nor ever would repair this truck under any now or future recalls. This is a low mileage truck and I am the secound owner.

Consumer states: the windshield wiper motor has a short in it, the windsheild wipers will just quit. If you pull over and wiggle a plug then they'll work, but will quit again going down the road.

When windshield wiper motor gets wet from rain or washing the car, wipers seem to short out and turns on by itself, will not turn off until dry.

Windshield wipers just quit during operation. Switching between pulse and continuous operation sometimes restores operation, but they quit again. Problem seems to be getting worse.

Consumer stated windshield wipers failed intermittently.

Intermittently while driving 20 mph in inclement weather windshield wiper failed, causing poor driver visibility. Vehicle wass taken to the dealer for inspection, but mechanic was unable to determine the cause of the problem.

Windshield wipers worked intermittently during inclement conditions. Dealer was contacted. Dealer informed consumer that the vehicle was not covered under that recall. The consumer stated that both the 1997 Chevrolet and the 1999 tahoe had problems with wipers.

While driving in inclement windshield wipers operated on their own. And intermittently they failed. This caused poor visibility to the driver. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it home. The cause had not been determined at this time.

While driving in a very heavy rain storm windshield wipers completely broke. Consumer could not get them to work again. Consumer stated that windshield wipers just flopped to the left, hitting the side view mirror.

After arriving home the consumer researched the vehicle's recalls a found that there was one for the wiper motor (recall # 02054) in gm vehicles manufactured from 1994-1999. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who determined that the consumer's vehicle was not included in the recall. The consumer contacted the manufacturer who indicated that he vehicle was not included because it was manufactured at a different plant.

While driving at 65 mph in a rain storm the windshield wipers suddenly quit working. This resulted in poor visibility. When this occurred consumer immediately pulled over to the side of the road and waited until the rain storm stopped. This happened because the solder joint near the wiring harness connector cracked. The windshield wiper motor circuit and cover needed to be replaced as stated in the windshield wiper wiring recall 98v1500001.

The consumer stated that windshield wipers worked when they wanted to. The consumer is concerned that the condition may cause an accident.

The contact stated that on November 29, 2003 they windshield wipers would work intermittently. Recall campaign# 00000165325 was issued for the windshield wiper motor, however this vehicle was not included due to VIN. The consumer had taken the vehicle to the dealer, and they suggested that the contact would have to pay out of pocket to have the vehicle fixed. The contact stated that this was the same circuit board failure that was mentioned in the recall. The consumer could hear a noise coming from windshield wiper motor like it was attempting to work. (11/15/05).

The windshield wipers work when they want to work. Sometimes the obstruct the drivers view. The dealer stated no recall. Please provide further information.

As described in the windshield motor failure issues concerning the 94 to 97 Chevrolet pickup truck models, my 1998 Silverado extended cab is experiencing the same exact defect. I have no idea how many failures it has had because it is a consistent problem. This issue has been going on since April of 2003 and has gotten progressively worse. I almost totaled out my truck in dallas back in October during a rainstorm due to system failure. They pretty much work when they want to. And its usually not when I need them. Same part as in 97 issues, same problem, but no recall or replacement. Really makes me want to buy another chevy truck!!! yeah right!!!.

Windshield wipers stopped working. Turned to high they started working, if put in limit time it did not work. Shut off truck and restarted truck they worked o. K. For 5 min. Then stopped again.

Windshied wipers, stopped working ---then could get them on only on high. Gm dealer and gm replaced chip/mtr gm paid for part,dealer charged 180. 00. Now I hear re-calls on 1999 and up on same thing. . I have 2002 Silverado since 2002 not in re-call ,figured you should be aware,, problem still exist .
