40 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2012

The first brake line failure was in July of 2012 and was from the abs to the rear brake hose, this one line cost $337. 05 to replace. It failed on the highway and I almost ran into the car in front of me. The 2nd line failed yesterday 10/5/16 while driving on a secondary road and again was located on the abs unit. It has not been repaired yet. I bought a stainless steel brake kit from dorman and plan to replace all the brake lines on the truck so as we don't get killed or harm anyone we run into on the next failure as the remaining lines are very, very rusty. Future failure of the rest of the lines is both imminent and expected. Nhtsa please act so as to prevent anyone from getting hurt or even killed.

Failure Date: 12/29/2011

There were 2 incidents of the same problem on different portion of brake lines on my Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2000 extended cab. In both incidents the problem appeared while backing out from my drive way. Both times there were completely no brakes due to rusted out brake lines. I was very lucky that the problem did not show while I was on the road. There were no accidents involved. The first time it happened on Dec. 29 (or 28), 2011. I was taking my son for his dentist appointment and there were no brakes. I did not realize the problem at the beginning until I was out of my drive way and on the neighborhood road and trying to stop at the first stop sign. It was really really scary but I managed to stop my vehicle. It cost $364 to fix the problem. It was partial replacement of the brake line. The second time it happened on March 18, 2014, while I was going to another appointment. I did not go any further than out of my drive way. This time it cost $1235 to replace the entire brake line.

49 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2011

My 2000 chevy Silverado 1500 that I purchased new and now have 109,000 miles on it and has always been garaged. The brakes have failed on me 3 different times due to corrosion to the brake lines that rusted through. I have had the front brake lines replaced once in 2008 and the rear brake lines replaced twice in 2009 & 2011. The 3 times either my wife was driving or I was when the brakes failed, luckly we were able to get the vehicle to slow down enough to pull off into a field or breakdown lane of the highway avoiding a serious accident. 2010 had the rear shackle bracket replace because of corrosion that rusted through and in 2011 had to have the transmission cooler lines replaced due to corrosion. The frame has alot of corrosion and one of the cross bars is rusted through. I have owned different vehicles over 44 years and I always drove my vehicles for 10 or more years before getting a new one and never had a vehicle that had brake lines rust through and with this much undercarriage corrosion.

50 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2011

To date I have had three (3) of the 4 brake lines on my truck repaired because of line failure due to rust. My truck originally came from the ft. Wayne, in area where they use salt throughout the winter months. I bought the truck from my wife's sister. I know the truck was garaged and well maintained. My mechanic said that exposure to salt for several years caused the lines to corrode. This is a definite safety problem and should be subject to recall. If you need further details about my repairs you can contact:. . . Claytons car care 3701 n. Duke street durham, nc 27704 they have done all 3 repairs to my brakes.

55 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2011

I own a 2000 chevy 1500 truck. On June 24, 2011, I was on the highway, on my way to work and the peddle for the breaks went all the way to the floor. No brakes. Luckily I am a police officer and was trained on what to do in this situation and I found it prior to needing them for an abrupt stop. Upon closer inspection, I found the brake line to the rear axel had rusted through under the cab. I removed the bed of the truck and replaced the line. I then examined the other brake lines and found all the brake lines to be completely rusted. This rusting is premature for a 2000 year vehicle. My 2001 volkswagen’s brake lines still look like new and it has fifty thousand more miles. This premature rusting is a very serious problem. If I needed the brakes for an emergency stop, or did not know what to do in the event of no brakes, there would have been serious personal or property damage. Gm knows they have a problem with the brake components on the trucks they made. They just have not had anyone make them do anything about it. Yes I have the old lines.

56 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

I was braking while exiting my local exit on the highway when hydraulic brake pressure was suddenly and completely lost, sending the pedal to the floor. Unable to stop in time, I went through the stop sign at the end of the ramp. Luckily there was no oncoming traffic and I was able to take the turn and bring the vehicle to a stop on the side of the road. After getting the vehicle home on the emergency brake, it was obvious what happened, a hydraulic fitting ruptured from corrosion/rust, which depressurized the brake system. After replacing the fitting, a completely separate brake line blew out in a different location which would/could have caused a separate incident. It is clear that every brake line and fitting needs to be changed because of corrosion/rust.

57 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2011

Gm pickup trucks -excessivie rust to brake lines, frame & cross-members. I suggest a metallugical analysis of said parts from late '90s thru 2007 vs '60s,'70's, & '80's models which did not exhibit early failure. The excessive rust to brake lines & undercarriage is a safety issue and is dangerous to the occupants of the vehicle and other motorist & pedestrians when failure occurs, not if, but when it occurs. The NHTSA has been aware since 2009 and it appears to the public that politics is in play. No results have surfaced, but plenty of dangerously rusted & unsafe vehicles travel the road amongst your loved ones.

66 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2010

The brake lines on my truck rusted out, causing a loss of vehicle braking power. Of all the vehicles that I've owned over the years, I have never had a brake line rust out! on 11/13/2010, the driver side front line rusted through when my children and I were in the truck. In a restaurant parking lot, I noticed that the brake pedal went low, but the vehicle seemed to still have braking power. I drove about 3/4 of a mile to a gas station and had almost no braking power when I got there. I looked under the truck and brake fluid was spraying out! my truck was towed home and the next day I spliced in a replacement brake line, but noticed that they all seemed to be very rusty. In August of 2012 another brake line rusted through, this time while the truck was in my driveway. I had started the truck to leave, and pushed on the brake to shift out of park and the pedal went to the floor. I exited the vehicle and saw brake fluid spraying underneath the truck. At this point, I decided to replace all of the faulty factory brake lines with after-market stainless steel brake lines. I'm still in the process of doing this job, as it is very maintenance intensive job, and I don't have a lot of time to work on the vehicle, but luckily I have other vehicles to drive. I do not think that the brake lines should have failed so quickly, considering I've never experienced a brake line failure on any other vehicle. It appears that Chevrolet selected an improper type of steel to use for the brake lines.

68 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2010

Rear left side brakeline failure due to rust on 2000 chevy Silverado 1500, on inspection rust noticed on all brake lines. Many similar reports from consumers on same complaint. Newyork based vehicle, truck always washed undercarriage to remove salt from roadway in winter months. All lines need replacement. . . Dangerous condition!!!!! please have your vehicle inspected for your safety. No damage , crashed into curb in parking lot. I strongly believe these vehicles should all be removed from roads and fixed at gm expense. Nhtsa has responsibility to enforce safety recalls but has yet taken due to influence of our "nationalized car manufacturing company". Due to the government ownership of this company, any failure to act responsibly on this matter should be seen as "wanton neglect" by this agency for the safety of the public at large & not just these vehicle owners. I fully intend to inform my local rep. To the failure of this agency to take seriously the consequences of continuing to allow 1. 3 million trucks with known serious safety issues to remain operating on our roadways.
