Defect: engine failure caused by lifter and camshaft failure at 114 miles (5. 2 engine hours). The vehicle is at the dealership undergoing warranty repairs. The service department confirmed a seized lifter, necessitating the replacement of all lifters and the camshaft. The incident occurred at highway speeds on the interstate when the engine suddenly began knocking loudly. Immediately after the knocking started, the check engine light illuminated, followed by consecutive "service anti-collision system" and "service esc (electronic stability control)" warning messages.
I started the vehicle in the morning, and noticed a knocking noise from deep inside the engine. Took the vehicle to the dealership, the knocking be turned into squealing and grinding and banging, check engine light came on, and vehicle died in front of the service department door. I’m an experienced auto technician and know that that was a connecting rod bearing knock. And now need a new engine on a vehicle with 919 miles on it.
On June 3, 2026, my 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 lt trail boss, which has a 6. 2l l87 v8 engine, stalled and shut off unexpectedly while I was stopped at a traffic light on a public highway. The engine died without warning, leaving me stranded in traffic and creating a serious safety risk for me and other drivers because of the chance of a collision. I had to call the police to come and sit behind me to keep myself safe from a collision while I waited for a tow truck. A dealer diagnosed the vehicle with dtc p0016, indicating a crankshaft/camshaft position correlation fault. This points to either an engine timing problem or an internal engine failure. The dealer confirmed the issue and gave me a repair estimate of about $11,000. Both the vehicle and repair records can be inspected if needed. Before the failure, the vehicle showed signs of an engine timing or internal issue and eventually triggered the check engine light with code p0016. After researching, I discovered many reports from other owners with the same 6. 2l l87 engine who faced similar problems, including p0016 faults, engine stalling, internal engine damage, and complete engine replacement. While some vehicles with this engine have been part of recalls or special coverage programs, my vehicle is not included, even though it shows the same failure pattern. At the time of the failure, the vehicle has about 140,336 miles. I believe my vehicle has the same defect affecting other 6. 2l l87 engines. I ask that NHTSA look into whether more vehicles should be added to any current or future recalls or defect investigations. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Engine seized middle of road had to coast off into a safe spot to park.

The 6. 2 liter engine has been recalled. The problem is if you pass inspection you are now required to use a higher grade of oil. This results in an additional cost of about $50 per change. The reimbursement of the difference should have been covered by the recall as this was not an intended cost when I purchased the truck.
I was driving on the freeway at 70 mph and my engine totally froze which made my car die and almost caused a huge accident right in the middle of the freeway. Then I had to push it off to 12 mile road gas station in the middle of oncoming traffic. My engine seized and it has been in the dealership since June 3. It is now July 4 2026th so 31 days and I still haven’t even found out if it’s my engine or not they haven’t really told me anything.

2019 silverado experienced sudden engine failure while driving, creating a safety hazard. Had taken vehicle to serpentine in tallmadge ohio for brake repair as well as a ticking sound a couple of times within the past 2 years. Each time the complaint regarding the noise it made was not addressed or documented as they said it was the brakes. While driving the truck, it started clanking and banging, smoking and spewed oil all over engine and ground. The truck is completely inoperable.

My 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 had an oil pump failure at 77,000 miles… truck may be 11 years old but it only has 77k on it and the oil pump has already failed? seems crazy to me, especially when I’ve changed the oil religiously every 3,000 miles.

It started backfiring and knocking.
My 2020 chevy trailboss 6. 2l v8 l87, same engine that has been recalled for 2021-2024 literally went dead in the middle of rush hour traffic. The engine has been deemed dead due to the exact current recall reasons. Seeing that was traffic was flowing at 45mph that was not a good scene as the vehicle " locked" itself into park originally so I was stuck in the middle of traffic. The vehicle has been confirmed seized uo by the portsmouth nh chevy dealer which is the key auto group. Warranty adjusters representatives from a third party, not gm, will be assessing it this week. I purchased an after market warranty not by gm. I had no warning lights leading into the failure.

I was travelling on the highway at approximately 72 miles an hour in the left lane trying to pass a vehicle in the right lane. While accelerating my truck was like the brakes were slammed on and all kinds of lights starting flashing. This included the check engine light, low oil pressure light and lane assist lights. The truck shifted into neutral and I could not place back into drive. I swerved and almost lost control of the vehicle and nearly missed colliding with the safety rails on the left of the road and then with the car on the right side. I then pulled onto the shoulder after nearly being rear ended by another vehicle approaching on the left. The vehicle would not react to the gas pedal. I pulled onto the shoulder and turned the vehicle off. Tried to restart but again nothing but mutliple lights and warnings. I checked my app for Chevrolet and it stated that the vehicle needed engine and transmission system service. Variable valve timing system needs serviced. Ingition system needed serviced. The onstar diagnostic alert indicated p0016 was detected. I opened the hood to inspect and the coolant overflow was spewing coolant. I checked the oil level at that point and it was just a little below full. I had taken this vehicle into the dealership two other times stating that the vehicle had stalled before on the highway but not to this degree. The other two times it stalled when accelerating it would allow me to pull over and restart. But both of those times I never had any flashing lights or diagnostic codes. I explained this to the dealership and how unsafe it was. Both of those times almost ended in a vehicle accident with other vehicles around me. The dealership said they could not diagnose any issues unless the truck created a diagnostic code. These issues have been ongoing with these vehicles for a long time and the dealership just did not want to deal with them. I had the vehicle go thru the recall diagnostic tests. It did not fix them.

The contact owns a 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 70 mph, there was an abnormally loud pinging sound coming from the engine. The vehicle lost motive power, the brakes and the steering wheel became inoperable. The message "depress start" was displayed. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, where it was initially diagnosed that the battery failure was unsoldered. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. While being test-driven by the mechanic, the vehicle stalled. After further investigation, it was determined that the engine needed to be replaced due to the main bearing failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, opened a case and informed the contact that a case worker, near his location, would contact him in 24 hours. The failure mileage was approximately 9,025.
On [xxx], I was going to atlanta, the truck started hesitating harshly while I was passing another driver on a two lane road. The truck wouldn’t accelerate and the paddle seemed to be stuck, I had to pull off the road to avoid a head on collision. On the 30th of may, I took the truck to allen turner in pensacola, florida where I purchased it and reported the issue, the service department was closed and they sent me next door to a Chevrolet dealership, which was also closed. On today [xxx], I took the truck out for a test drive, and I had the same incident happen, but this time I pulled into a gas station and shutdown the truck. Once I turned the truck back on, the check engine light came on. I didn’t think I would make it back home, because the truck didn’t accelerate correctly, and when I pressed the gas pedal it didn’t accelerate and was making different noises. The pedal seemed to be stuck, with no acceleration. I recorded a little bit with my phone while trying to drive, but it’s not the best. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
I have 112,000 miles on my truck and my 6. 2l motor is going out or knocking. I am very unhappy that my truck is not covered under the recall and I would like to understand why it is not since this is the issue of the recall. I would like to clarification on this and what options I have since it is going to cost me 14k to replace the motor. Case #101943027.
The engine in my truck failed while driving down the interstate highway (I-10) on may 28, 2026. At the time of failure, a loud popping noise emitted from the engine. Power and speed were reduced as the result of the failure. The check engine light and service engine lights illuminated as quickly as the failure occurred. As many vehicles were simultaneously traveling along the highway at speed, my vehicle suddenly slowing down without indication (brake lights) could have inadvertently caused an accident. As a result, I continued driving the vehicle under reduced power to my home which was only approximately 2 miles away. During the 2-mile drive to my home, the loud popping noise intermitted but reduced power was consistent. Diagnostic checks revealed a code p0305 indicating that cylinder #5 was misfiring. Checking the components of that cylinder revealed the intake valve of cylinder #5 was not actuating when the engine was running indicating a failed lifter & camshaft.
The contact owns a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 25 mph, the vehicle suddenly made knocking sounds. The check engine warning light illuminated. Additionally, the vehicle experienced rough idling and a decrease in motive power. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined the lifters had collapsed and bent the push rod. The push rod was replaced, but the newly installed part instantly bent. The mechanic informed the contact that the cam needed to be replaced. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 107,800.
L87 engine failure.
While driving, the vehicle suddenly displayed “service esc” and “service traction control” warnings. Shortly after, the engine stalled and the vehicle became difficult to restart. Vehicle experienced rough running/misfires and loss of power. Diagnostic trouble codes retrieved included p0300, p0106, p3498, p00ff, and u1962. The issue appears intermittent but creates a serious safety concern due to unexpected stalling while driving. Concerned about possible electrical, engine management, or stability control system failure affecting safe operation of the vehicle. No prior warning before incident.
Normal driving then heard a knocking and squealing. Was told it was a spun main bearing on the crack shaft.
While I was visiting my mother in kentucky my 6. 2 truck engine failed. It all happened really quick and no warning signs prior. Truck passed recall in April 26. I just left visiting my mother at nursing home. I was on mountain parkway when it all of a sudden started making a noise. It sounded like it was coming through firewall. All of sudden check engine light came on and I pulled over right before off ramp. I turned truck off for couple of minutes and started it back up. No light but as soon as I pulled back onto parkway noise started again. I was next to off ramp so I pulled into marathon gas station and as I was pulling in it died and wouldn’t start back. Truck was taken to dealership on 5/24. They said they can’t give me a courtesy vehicle due to me living out of state and I would have to get a rental on my own but gm would cover up to $44 per day. I contacted gm twice and said I needed to speak to dealer about getting a car. I explained what dealer told me but they said it was out of their control. Still paying for rental out of pocket. Dealer called and verified that engine needs replaced and new engine is back ordered with no eta. I’m still paying truck payment on a truck I don’t have and no help from gm on giving a car to drive. Need help with escalating new engine replacement and rental that gm is covering.
Truck engine shut off doing 60. Has major recall and issue these trucks are unsafe I was very scared.
The lifters failed at 106634 miles. This caused the motor to lose power while driving. The dealer confirmed and said a new engine was needed. There were no warnings just immediate failure of a part Chevrolet knows very well is an issue but won't do anything about.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? engine seized and vehicle was towed to dealership. It is available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? loss of propulstion, described below. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? yes, dealership where originally purchased. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? inspected at dealership by gm/Chevrolet technician. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? none prior to failure detailed description: on 5/21/2026, during normal driving, the engine in my truck lost propulsion due to a major internal failure. This is a 2023 general motors 6. 2l (l87) engine that was inspected at the dealership where it was originally purchased for the previously issued NHTSA "loss of propulsion" recall and passed without any noted issues. This engine only has ~20,000 miles on it. The engine failed in relatively heavy traffic and could have easily resulted in a serious accident due to inability to route my vehicle to a safe area while under power. This all happened without any prior warning, no check engine lights, noises or lamps or symptoms. The dash simply illuminated with a "press start" message. The truck was towed to the dealer for evaluation. The dealer called me today (5/26/2026) stating the engine was seized and a new engine would have to be ordered from gm for installation. This event occurred while the vehicle (2023 silverado zr2) is still under the original 36 month/36,000 mile warranty.
While traveling on the interstate towing a fifth-wheel camper going 55 mph, a message appeared on the dash instructing me to press the start button. I pressed the start button, but the vehicle would not start. When I pressed the start button the entire instrument cluster and navigation display went out. We were able to safely coast to the breakdown lane, skidding to a stop. We remained in the breakdown lane on a busy highway on a holiday weekend in 90+ degree heat for 7+ hours before being towed to a nearby dealership. When the right type of tow truck arrived (capable of towing the truck and camper off the highway), the driver had to remove the driveshaft before the vehicle could be towed to the nearby dealership. This is because of the electronic shift. If the vehicle is not running it cannot be shifted out of park without a special tool. We felt very unsafe sitting in the breakdown lane with cars whizzing by shaking our camper and vehicle at each vehicle passing. Not 1 time did the police stop to provide assistance/make sure all were ok, etc. The vehicle has since been towed to the local dealership and after they inspected the vehicle it was determined the engine seized due to debris in the engine. A replacement engine is on backorder. The engine had already been inspected for the recall and gm 6. 2l l87 "fix" was performed, but this did not stop the engine from seizing.
I am filing this complaint regarding a major engine failure in my 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 equipped with the 5. 3l v8 engine. At approximately 56,000 miles, my vehicle experienced a failed valve lifter, resulting in loud engine ticking, a check engine light, loss of power, and unsafe driving conditions. The vehicle was no longer operating properly and required immediate repair. Although the vehicle had been regularly maintained and had relatively low mileage for such a significant engine issue, I was informed that the failed lifter damaged the camshaft and related engine components, requiring extensive repairs. The total cost of the repair was $6,180, which I paid out of pocket. My silverado was just outside Chevrolet's 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty period by time, despite having only 56,000 miles. A major internal engine failure should not occur on a well-maintained vehicle with such low mileage. After researching this issue, I discovered that lifter failures involving the active fuel management (afm) and dynamic fuel management (dfm) systems in gm's 5. 3l engines have been widely reported by other Chevrolet silverado owners. This indicates a potential design or manufacturing defect rather than normal wear and tear. I am requesting that general motors provide reimbursement or goodwill assistance for all or a substantial portion of the $6,180 repair cost. I believe customers should not be responsible for paying thousands of dollars to repair a known issue on a low-mileage vehicle. I respectfully request that this matter be reviewed and resolved promptly.
I was driving on I-35 in norman, oklahoma, shortly after 7 am, when my 2020 chevy trail boss with the 6. 2 engine stopped running. I was in moderate traffic and shifted the gear shifter to neutral, and the motor would not restart, leaving me in traffic. I was able to slowly get on teh shoulder to avoid a collision, and the engine would not restart. I had teh vehicle towed to ammco in norman, oklahoma, where it was determined that a catastrophic engine failure occurred. This is teh same problems that are associated with recalls on the 2021 and up 6. 2 gm engine. Luckly I was able to get to a safe place and avoid a collision.
New motor put in due to drive train seizing up sept 2025. “oil pressure low” and died while stopping at a red light in may 2026. Would not crank back. New motor only had 40k miles. Supposedly gm will not cover tow or rental.
2026 silverado engine blowed up at 6,413 miles. This is the 6. 2 l87 engine. .
The engine check appeared on dashboard then engine did not start, vehicle towed to dealership. Where they discovered a lift pin had broke. A new engine was ordered. Details on incident: I driving on i88 at 70 mile per hour when my vehicle when from 70 to 30 with engine check flashing running rough. After pulling off to side of the hwy, turn-off the engine and calling for help. I decided to try the engine again and it started after about 10 minutes with message "proceed with caution" so drove it to near Chevrolet dealership. Once arrived the service advisor saw the engine light and pulled two code. Nevertheless, they were not able find the source of the problem. I drove the vehicle home and two days later I drove the vehicle 20 miles and parked it at locate near me. When came out the vehicle would not start & was towed to the dealership. To some like what I written above is very damage situation.

At approximately 24,000 miles the engine had catastrophic failure under normal street/highway driving conditions. The engine is the 6. 2l v8. The issue began with a high pitch squeal or chirping sound and noticeable power loss. I parked the truck over night and then drove it to the dealer first thing the next morning. While on the way to the dealership, which was less than 20 miles away, the engine began having much bigger issues. A loud knocking noise was apparent and the rear end began locking up causing the tires to also lock up. Once at the dealership the engine completely failed and locked up. The engine did have the newly recommended 0w-40 oil installed prior to the failure.
The defective manufacturer lifters on my 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 went on my truck damaging the lifters, camshaft, oil pump and I'm sure more than that. I know it's an ongoing investigation/lawsuit with general motors, but they need to held accountable and should fix this issue free of charge. Not everyone has $5k-$10k+ to repair their engine due to their negligence. Thank you.
