1 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 04/15/2025

The vehicle's tcm has apparently failed as evidenced by cel code "u0101", low power ("limp mode"), hard shifting, no gear selection indicator, and extremely slow acceleration. Vehicle is currently available for inspection, but will be receiving a replacement tcm soon. Myself and others' safety was put at risk due to my the vehicle's inability to continue through an intersection at a reasonable rate. The problem has not been reproduced by a dealer/service center, nor has it been inspected by anyone since the incident. The aforementioned warning lamp that indicated the issue appeared upon starting the vehicle, which drove normally for the first 11 miles.

2 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 04/10/2025

The truck went to the dealer for recalls on March 21, 2025. The truck is still within the bumper-to-bumper warranty. Recalls consisted of tailgate fix, tcm & ecm updates. The truck was returned to me approximately a week later. I noticed a significant loss of power. I took the truck back to the dealer and told them about the issue. They had it another 2 days and returned it to me, saying there was nothing wrong. Approximately a week later, I was driving down the road and the check engine light appeared on the gauge cluster. I immediately drove the truck to the dealer, and the dtcs were emissions-related. The service advisor, jeff, told me to keep driving the truck, and it might go away. I drove the truck home, 20 mins away from the dealer, and as I pulled into my driveway, a message on the gauge cluster said, "add engine oil. " I notified the dealer of the issue immediately. The next morning, I added a gallon of oil, and there were still no signs of oil on the dipstick. At that time, I noticed there was no coolant in the reservoir, but engine oil residue, and a collapsed upper radiator hose. The truck was towed to the dealer later that day. After inspection, the dealer said the oil cooler had failed. They sent me the service bulletin, but that bulletin only says, "oil and coolant mix," nothing about the disappearance of the fluid, and no explanation of the emissions codes. The dealer and gm's corporate office are refusing the share the diagnostic data on how they have concluded that the oil cooler has failed. Their solution is to replace the oil cooler and see what happens. This truck has 1000 miles left on the warranty, and the parts/procedures expire at the end of the bumper-to-bumper warranty. Recap: gm will not share diagnostic data, and they are refusing to extend coverage, yet their remedy is to experiment with my $70,000 truck, and the moment this truck is out of warranty, they are going to wash their hands of it. That is not acceptable.

5 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 05/10/2023

The transmission control module (tcm) began acting erratic. At times the transmission will not shift but several times it has gone into park( with no warning) when slowing down causing the wheels to lock and the truck skids to a stop. I was nearly in 2 accidents when this happened. Both time I was hauling a load and caused the traffic behind me have to swerve to not run into me. In looking into the issue I found that in 2011 gm had put out a shop notice that they had a known problem with the tcm and they thought it might be caused by a non-oem fan belt causing electrical discharge that might impact the tcm. A second shop notice from gm stated that the issue was due to heat and since they has mounted the unit on the fan shroud it should be moved. But none of the shops I went to knew about these shop notices from gm. Thousands of tcms have failed but no recall. Gm has now greatly reduced production of replacement modules and the cost of a new tcm has gone from $400 to $5000 ( plus programing ) and a long wait time to get one. You can get one refurbished for $1200.

6 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 04/14/2023

When pulling out into busy traffic the tcm quit and lost all power to the wheels. Could not move. Luckily the traffic seen we had a issue and swerved to go around us. We found out later this has been a huge issue for gm with tcm on units like mine. If traffic would not have been paying attention they would have hit us and caused injuries to my family and probably theirs. Glad we were not pulling out onto a highway with high speed traffic.

9 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 02/09/2023

The vehicle started to shift on its own mostly between the upper gears even though terrain or load had not changed. At slower speeds the vehicle started to automatically shift into park and lock up the wheels. This caused a very serious risk of injury to me and the people behind me when it would lock up. After stopping the vehicle sometimes does not move when in drive. There are no warning lights took it to a shop and they checked it over. I was informed that there is a known issue with the electronic transmission control unit (tcm) for the allison transmission. The issue is with the location of the tcm. Gm has developed a new unit to replace the original tcm that is engineered to no be affected by this. But due to the demand gm has a back order on the new tcm. The cost to get a tcm has risen from $800 dollars to $5000 dollars if you can find one.

12 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 05/31/2022

My truck has been at a dealership since may 31st , 2022. It needs a tcm. While researching , plus calling aftermarket parts suppliers(auto zone and others) , and also calling auto recycling/salvages yards , there are zero tcm's available unless you get lucky at a auto salvage yard minutes after a wrecked truck shows up. There is a huge issue with the tcm's failing on these 10 year old trucks , and gm refuses to allow their supplier to make replacement tcm's. I have lost the use of my truck for almost 6 months at this point. I would also like to know how many other customers are waiting for a tcm.

13 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 11/21/2019

Anytime a trailer is first attached, the truck will randomly go into reduced power mode while driving. This is very unsafe as the truck can to this at highway speed in traffic. It will do this a few times until the pcm "learns" there is a trailer attached. Gm is aware of the issue and issued service bulletin 06-06-04-042b to address the issue by reprogramming the pcm. Because of the safety concerns, this should be addressed as a recall. However,I had to take the truck into the dealer for the update and was expected to pay for them fixing a known software issue. Instead of doing the update at no charge, they managed to damage the pcm while performing the update. The pcm is no longer serviceable and the dealer is wanting to charge me for a replacement even though it was damaged during a called for service bulletin update. The vehicle was not originally equipped with a trailer hitch so the problem didn't arise until the hitch was installed and a trailer was attached.

14 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 07/31/2018

The tcm malfunctioned. After being replaced the vehicle still didn't perform as it did before the repair. I have researched this issue with all Chevrolet trucks from various years. There are multiple blogs from owners of these trucks that show the extent of the issue. I cannot afford to pay $ 1000. 00 to fix a problem that gm knows that has existed for years. This is a serious problem if you are driving and the truck looses power; especially when you're going down hill traveling at a high rate of speed and your transmission doesn't function properly. I have had the transmission repaired and the issue persists; it seems as though gm wants owners to pay out of pocket. Some may not and this could lead to unsafe trucks being on the road. Thank you.
