1 Diesel Engine problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 09/15/2015

Duramax lmm diesel engine had all 8 glow plugs fail one at a time. Replacement glow plugs from gm have a higher voltage rating on them indicating gm was aware these will all fail in time. The original glow plugs voltage rating made the engine start quicker less turnovers at the expense of the owner who had to replace all the original glow plus as thy failed after the warranty period. Few failed during warrant as other reported and most failed months to years after the warranty. In m case they all failed at year 7 of owning the truck and all failed open due to this over voltage that gm corrected in the replacement glow plug. Repair was not cheap and could leave you stranded as the glow plugs fail and are needed to start a cold motor in a cold climate. Gm should replace or reimburse owners for these know to fail glow plugs. Original glow plug voltage rating 4. 72v, replacement glow plug rating 4. 85v. Defective glow plugs causes check engine light to come on and sets pcm codes as well as hard starting and excessive cranking to start. Upon start engine could be very rough as it runs without the cylinder that has the failed glow plugs.

2 Diesel Engine problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 07/06/2010

I have a 2002 Chevrolet 2500hd pickup with the duramax diesel engine with just over 100,000 miles on it. Recently, while sitting at a stop sign, darik smoke would come from the exhaust. It never did this before so I took it to the local dealer to find out what the problem might be. The dealer told me that the injectors needed to be replaced at a cost of about $4500. I contacted GMC, they set up a case file and got back to me in about a week to tell me that I was beyond the 7 year extended warranty and so they would not cover the repair. The fact that it only had about 1/2 of the 200,000 miles covered in the extended warranty didn't seem to count for anything. One of the selling points when I purchased the vehicle was that it should last for 200k to 300k miles without needing repair. The vehicle has been used primarily for personal transportation, not abused, with only occasional towing of a relatively light trailer.

3 Diesel Engine problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 11/01/2009

The contact owns a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 diesel truck. The sensor in the engine has caused the vehicle to shut off unexpectedly. The contact had to drive onto the emergency lane, shut the vehicle off, and allow it to reset. The failure has occurred at least twice a day since the fall of 2009. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was told that they would not repair the vehicle because it exceeded the 120,000 mile warranty. His vehicle can be repaired at his expense for $1200. The gm manufacturer confirmed that the vehicle the warranty limit had expired. The failure mileage was 143,548.

4 Diesel Engine problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 10/15/2008

With the new epa regulations requiring the dpf on diesel engines there is a problem with gm trucks, where as when the truck goes into regeneration mode at low speeds, (ie heavy traffic) the fumes emitted are sucked back into the cab of the truck through the ventilation system. In my truck regeneration will happen each tank full of diesel (1-2 times per week). At high speeds this is not an issue. When the fumes are sucked back into the truck the occupants eyes will burn and you start to feel sleepy and or sick to your stomach. I have researched on-line in some of the forums and others are complaining that children will actually vomit from the smell in the cab. It seems there is a fix to this by chevy, however they are reluctant to correct the problem unless you make a large enough stink at the dealership level. I imagine because of the cost! it seems to me that an issue like this where fumes are being pulled into the vehicle is a safety problem that need to be addressed by an authority such as yourself. I cannot believe that these fumes are not going to eventually cause health issues, or even worst somebody falling asleep at the wheel and causing an accident. I just found out that there is a TSB from gm on this issue that I have been experiencing for over a year now but the dealerships don't tell you. I will be bringing my vehicle to the dealership next week and forcing this issue to get the part that needs to be fixed replaced.

5 Diesel Engine problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 03/28/2008

2002 Chevrolet silverado equipped with duramax diesel engine, fuel injector bodies cracked filling engine crank case with diesel fuel. I found the condition before any damage could occur. If this condition was not caught like I did, the fuel in the oil would over flow from the engine crank case and spray under the vehicle potentially causing a fire. Vehicle was taken to Chevrolet dealership where the fuel injectors are being replaced by a special campaign. Dealer was reluctant to replace fuel injectors due to not meeting all conditions mandated by gm. Gm has extended warranty for this problem to 7 years or 200k miles, but has not done a recall. These fuel injectors have an extremely high failure rate and many leak fuel into the crank case which could be a potential fire hazard.

Exhaust fumes entering the vehicle when coming to a complete stop. I have been to the dealer twice and they have observed the smell, but have no idea where it is coming from. They are suspecting that it is the new diesel after burner causing the smell.

10 Diesel Engine problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 03/08/2007

I have had diesel exhaust fumes in the 2007 silverado since I bought it new at the dealer. I put a carbon monixide detector in the truck . Went up to 495 lbs. Had it back to the dealer 3 times allready with no problem found. I sell diesel trucks for a living and found at least 80 other people on line and other places that have had the same problem. I am afraid to drive this vehicle myself let alone put my family in it. I have askes Chevrolet to buy the vehicle back, but I also want this NHTSA to look into this, not only for myself but all the rest of the people out there.
