Failure Date: 11/09/2008

Speedometer not working properly all the time. Can be doing 25 mph and all of the sudden speedometer goes to 60mph. It will not reset until I stop and turn truck off and on numerous times. Sometimes it will be pegged over 120 mph when on the highway and I am only doing 65mph.

38 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 10/29/2008

I was driving, going about 55 mph, when I looked down at my speedometer and it showed that I was going about 135mph. Now, with the vehicle parked, with the key on, it still shows that I'm going 70 mph. The vehicle has only 34,600 miles on it, and gm says they will repair it free, up to 70,000 miles, which is fine, but they (gm) won't recall these trucks because its not a safety matter. If you are exiting an interstate highway with a sharp turn rated at 35mph and you don't have a working speedometer it could be tragic. Just check the internet about if there are recalls of these trucks will show this problem is widespread. Thanks.

39 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 10/01/2008

Shortly after truck passed 36,000, the speedometer stopped showing the correct speed. It will fluctuate showing between 90 and 120 mph. When searching for information in the internet, I found this is actually a common problem with the silverado trucks.

40 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 09/03/2008

The speedometer on my 2005 chevy 2500hd 4x4 gave out at about 27000 miles two months ago. We were pulling a trailer on mountain roads at the time. Knowing your speed in the mountains is important and this could have been a deadly problem. Gm has known about the problem and I understand did a "special policy" on 2003 and 2004 vehicles. There needs to be a recall and the defective parts fixed before someone is killed. Please help us out and do not let this faulty equipment game continue just to make or save gm money at buyers expense and safety.

41 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 09/01/2008

At 26,000 miles the speedometer on my 2005 chevy silverado started to slowly down. Is has happened 5x in the past 6 trips. It is very dangerous because twice I was pulling a travel trailer on mountain roads where speed is a big safety issue. Too much speed and off a cliff we go. A research on the internet shows this is ad has been a major chevy issue and they need to recall it and pay people back who have had to have it fixed.

42 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 07/13/2008

I own a 2005 chevy silverado. The speedometer fluctuates between 50 and 70 miles an hour. It also sticks when slowing down from 10 mph to 0 mph. Talked to service rep at local dealer, he was aware of the this problem already and told me gm "might" do something about the faulty speedometers. I have heard the warranty on this was extended to 7 year 70,000 miles for '03 and '04 models. How can gm put a mileage restriction on the part that measures the mileage. If the speedometer is not working properly, the odometer should not be reading accurately either. What if the odometer says your vehicle has 75000 miles and the vehicle really has 67000. Guess what? your warranty period would have been exceeded in gm's eyes, even though the actual mileage is still within the warranty limits. A speedometer is a part that should never fail during the life of a vehicle. Gm should recall all defective speedometers no matter what mileage the vehicle has. . .

43 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

47 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 06/01/2008

Short in gauge cluster lack of odometer reading pending new gauge cluster install, value of $450. 00 there was a recall for 2003 and 2004 models, not for 2005? same problem!.

48 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 03/20/2008

We own two Chevrolet vehicles that are experiencing the all too common problem with defective and/ or erratic operation of speedometers. One is a 2003 silverado k-2500 h-d with approx 87,000 miles. We have owned this vehicle for 2 years this month, and the problem started just after bringing it home. It was bought used, so problem may have been around for much longer. The second is a 2003 tahoe lt with approx. 67,000 miles. This vehicle was purchased used also; in may 2008. The speedometer began malfunctioning in fall 2009. This is apparently a very common, and potentially seriously dangerous problem. We feel this is a manufacturer defect in material and workmanship, and not an expense to repair that should be wholly the responsibility of loyal vehicle owners. Who should be responsible if this causes, at best only expensive citations, and at worst possible fatal or serious accidents?.

49 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 03/14/2008

I have a 2005 chevy silverado with 46k miles on it and the speedometer failed. It intermittently starts at a random speed and sometimes sticks at max speed. I took to dealership and they said it would cost me around $500 to repair. I believe there is a history of stepper motor failures on this item for the last few years but they haven't recalled any of the 2005 or later models.

50 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

55 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 01/03/2008

Speedometer not working. Not knowing how fast your going I feel is a safety hazzad.

56 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 01/01/2008

Speedometer and tachometer have fails at 35,000 miles in 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500hd.

57 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 01/01/2008

Speedometer reading way off bounces up and down.

58 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 12/25/2007

Speedometer will change from a correct reading to a erroneous reading with no warning. If I turn on and off the vehicle, the speedometer will reset back 5 mph each time I do this until rest to 0mph at a stand still. It will then correctly operate for varying amounts of time (50 - 500 miles) before it goes haywire again. Gm acknowledges that this is a known problem and has a policy in place to repair at no cost if vehicle is 7 years old or less and less than 70,000 miles. My problem is that my vehicle is a 2004 with now 144,000 miles on it and gm will do nothing. Initially I contacted them on my own and was declined. After I sent a letter to the attorney general's office in mn, gm contacted me and for a second time denied helping correct this problem. I'm contacting you at the direction of the mn attorney generals office. Bottomline is that the speedometer is not a convenience feature but a necessary feature required to safely operate the vehicle. Gm acknowledges that it is enough of an issue that they have a policy to repair outside of factory warranty however feel that my 3 1/2 year old $50,000 vehicle is precluded from the same consideration of a vehicle with less than 70,000 miles on it. Dealers I have spoke to tell me that this problem is so common that they repair these daily.

59 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 12/21/2007

My speedo went out on my 2003 shevy 2500hd at 116000 miles. I went to start it on a cold day and it was reading 20mph in park. Today it reads 70 mph in park and is reading over 70 mph over the speed that I am driving.

60 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 12/12/2007

Intermittent and erroneous operation of the speedometer in my 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 diesel truck. The speedometer frequently indicates the wrong speeds, at time over +100mph. At other times, indicates speeds less than actual or freezes altogether. Gm refuses to acknowledge issue or offer to repair. This is a serious safety issue and can result in driving at speeds above or below posted limits.

61 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 12/04/2007

I purchased a 2004 chevy 2500 hd last fall and now my instrument cluster is sticking and on occasion giving false readings. The needle of the speedometer was stuck on several occasions and the rpm needle does not read accurately> I don't even know if any of the other gauges are working properly. So far I have not had a speeding ticket, but with the gauges not working who knows how long.

62 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 11/19/2007

In October 2007 I purchased a used 2005 chevy Silverado 2500 hd pickup from a used car dealer with 38,515 miles on it. After the purchase I discovered the vehicle speedometer sticks and does not work properly. Now the instrument panel gauges also appear to not be showing the proper operating temperatures for the transmission. I have received no help to correct the problem other than to tell me to take it to a dealer and pay $600 to have it repaired. I have put less than 2000 miles on the truck and paid over $37000 for the truck. I don't have any money left to fix it and I think it is a safety risk to my family there must be something that can be done to help since it appears there are many complaints on the internet over this problem.

63 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 11/12/2007

At approx 65,000 miles my speedometer stopped working along with other gauges in the instrument panel. Gm refused to fix the problem. When I had 80,000 miles gm offered to fix the defect only on vehicles with less than 70,000 miles. They refused to correct the defect on my vehicle. The dealer estimates the cost to fix this defect at approx $450. 00 I now have approx 105,000 miles and continue to drive without a working speedometer. This vehicle and many with this same defect is used for towing. Gm has put profit ahead of safety and customer satisfaction. The ntsb has continued to allow thousands of vehicles to operate unsafely with this well known and documented defect by failing to force gm to recall these vehicles many of which were still being manufacture after the defect was discovered.

64 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 11/12/2007

Speedometer quit going back to zero. It is now stuck in the "pegged" position.

65 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 11/10/2007

2005 chevy Silverado 2500hd (duramax diesel). The speedometer suddenly stopped showing an accurate reading while driving approximately 10 mph. It now shows 55 mph while at a complete stop and pegs over 120 mph when driving on the interstate. This is a known issue with the 2004 model year, but I'm not seeing any info yet for 2005 (which is the model I have). This should be a recall from gm to fix this - rather than their tricky little "special" replacement rules that limit the fix to 70,000 miles. This is a huge safety issue - not being able to tell how fast I am traveling at any given time/not being able to trust my instrument panel readings.

66 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 11/04/2007

Speedometer reads improperly. You look down and your going 110 this makes you want to slam on your brakes. How safe would that be on a interstate?.

67 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 10/10/2007

Tachometer & speedometer failure at low temperatures.

68 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 10/01/2007

2004 Silverado 2500 hd abs kicks in at slow speeds. Now abs light and brake light are always on and I get dinging sound from warning system with message service brake system.

69 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 09/25/2007

Speedometer does not indicate proper speed. Can be at 0mph when traveling at 55mph. Or can be at 30mph when traveling at 55mph.

70 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 09/14/2007

We were driving home from a football game when we noticed we were apparently driving faster than the speedometer stated, it read 65mph,but the rpm's did not match and we were blowing past other vehicles on the highway and from that point had to guess how fast we were traveling. This has happen a few times and now the speedometer does not work at all. Gm sent out letters stating a possible instrument panel gauge needles may stick, flutter or become inoperative & may cause inaccurate readings. Gm refuses to recall or fix our vehicle/truck for free-they claim too many miles, I have proof this has happen to other trucks with miles at on or about 40,000, 90,000 and our vehicle at or about 147,000 at the time it malfunctioned. It is apparent that this is a safety issue and the malfunctions occur at various mileages on these trucks and gm will not repair our vehicle at their cost. The trucks in question are year(s) 2003,2004 & 2002 chevy silverado. It is very dangerous to drive our truck and not know how fast we are traveling.
