36 Fuel Pump problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 12/20/2005

Had starting problems with my SUV. Towed to dealer, where I was told that the fuel pump went bad due to a clogged fuel filter. Called to complain to gm that the requirement to replace the fuel filter was not listed on their scheduled maintenance chart in the owner's manual, I was then told that the pump shorted out which caused the failure. This is an internal fuel pump mounted within the tank itself.

During evacuation for hurricane rita as we were proceeding in traffic our 2002 chevy Suburban just died. It was as if it was getting no fuel. We had a full tank. The rpm and power steering along with the engine just went dead. Since the hurricane I have talk to 3 other people with Suburbans or yukons that this happen to. The dealership said it was the fuel pump. I now think something is wrong with these vehicles. I have the fuel pump taken from my Suburban.

42 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/29/2005

Purchased a new 2002 Suburban k2500 in Aug of 2002. At 17,000 miles, the air conditioning went out. Dealer replaced the compressor. At 27,000 miles, the fuel gauge showed empty when the tank was full. Dealer replaced rear fuel tank sending unit. At 55,000 miles, the fuel tank again showed empty with a full tank and the engine surged. The dealer (bob steele in cocoa FL) replaced the fuel pump in the rear tank and the sending unit in the front tank under my extended warranty with a deductible. Dealer stated this was not a recurrence of the problem before. At 58,000 miles the car stalled while crossing over a busy bridge/causway at approx. 60 mph. "reduced engine power" glared on the warning indicator, power steering was lost and lights on the dash were flashing erratically. Luckily, I had crested the top of the causway and managed to steer to the tiny shoulder without crashing into anybody. The car would not start immediately, but after trying for fifteen minutes I was able to get it started and drive home. I called the dealer (it was five minutes to closing time) and was told to bring it in the next day. It stalled again at a traffic light on the way to the dealer but started immediately. The dealer replaced the throttle position sensor under my extended warranty with deductible and again stated that none of these fuel/stalling problems were related. The car stalled again recently and the dealer said to bring it in if it happens again. This is starting to become a very dangerous situation that the dealer seems to be very unconcerned about.

43 Fuel Pump problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/20/2005

While driving vehicle, vehicle cut off and would not start back up.

44 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/17/2005

The consumer was traveling to north carolina at 70 mph on 8-8-05, and he was in the passing lane when the car cut off, and there were trucks practically on top of consumer's vehicle. There was no warning. He could not steer. He had to go over 3 lanes of traffic to get out of the way. The consumer had the vehicle towed to a garage. They replaced a 20 amp fuse going to the electronic control module (ecm) he picked it up. He drove another 400 miles. On 8-17-05 the car quit again on the highway. Had it towed to a Chevrolet dealer in north carolina, and they determined that it was the electric fuel pump in the fuel tank. He received a pending recall 05v155000 notice about 3 weeks ago pertaining to the fuel pump. He had the car serviced before going to north carolina, and they did not diagnose any problems with the car.

45 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/10/2005

When driving at speeds of 65-70 mph the vehicle stalled while accelerating to pass another vehicle on the interstate. The vehicle operated at a reduced speed. The engine did not die, but with hesitation the speed dropped from 65- 35 mph. The consumer continued to press the gas pedal, and the engine coughed and shot back up again. The consumer pulled over on the shoulder to avoid a tractor trailer. The consumer received a consumer service bulletin alerting the issue of engine stalling. The consumer lost h letter and called gm, who said this would not be a recall until November. The consumer took the vehicle to a certified pep boys mechanic, who determined this was a fuel pump problem. The fuel pressure, test that showed a low fuel pressure level at an idle due to fuel pressure, dropped even more. They replaced the fuel pump. Gm would not reimburse for corrections. Since the fuel pump was replaced there have been no problems.

46 Fuel Pump problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 07/19/2005

July 19th in denver colorado 2004 chevy Suburban stalled on santa fe blvd. In heavy traffic. Waited 30 minutes and then started truck and went about 2 miles and stalled again called local dealership and had truck towed to dealership. Dealership replaced fuel pump under warranty. Drove truck 1. 5 hours and same issue of truck stalling. Took back to dealership and mechanic on duty told me that it was a known defect with the 2004 chevy Suburban and nothing could be done until the air temperature went down. Temperature was around 100 degrees. Problem is caused by high temperature and altitude. Problem is vapor lock. On the 22 of July dealership was told to replace the fuel pump again by local chevy area vehicle manager (avm). Dealership replaced the fuel pump again and I drove it for 1. 5 hours and it stalled again in traffic. Took Suburban back to dealership next morning. Dealership assured me that 700 new fuel pumps are available to fix problem and one would be installed on my truck on July 26th. On July 26th found out that fuel pump sent by chevorlet corporate would not fit the Suburban and that I had to take my chances and drive it back to minnesota. Temperature was cooler and chevy felt it was worth the risk for me to drive it back to minnesota and let them know if I had a problem. Dealership also admitted that the fuel pump in the Suburban was already the "new " height altitude version of the fuel pump and that the dealership had multiple vehicles with the same problem and chevy does not know what the problem is. Dealership says issue is with 2004 Suburbans and silverados. Known issue at chevy and they are doing nothing to fix it. Suburban will still not work at high altitudes (denver) and temperatures in the 90s. Suburban was not fixed. Luckily weather cooled down. Call chevy 800-222-1020 refer to ticket 1-350803636 ask for arch summers he is the chevy representative I am waiting for call back from.

47 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 07/04/2005

The consumer owns a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban k1500. He stated there was a recall NHTSA campaign 05v155000 but his vehicle was not included due to VIN. He contacted the dealership and the manufacturer. The vehicle kept blowing the ecm fuse. This fuse controls the fuel pump and the computer. This recall was a fix for the fuse blowing. The consumer was driving down the road 70 mph when the fuse blew and the car just died.

48 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/21/2005

My gas tank read at half tank when leaving my driveway. After approx 9 miles while driving on the I-80 wb frwy on the fast lane my vehicle(v) began to quickly decrease in power, the fuel lights, the service lights, and then all warning lights began to flash. The fueld tank read empty. My car was fully disabled within approx 40 seconds. I was able to react quickly and pullover on the side of the freeway on I-80 wb on barrett Ave/san pablo Ave. I called a relative for assistance who put in 5 gal of gas since the fuel warning light first flashed when the (v) began decreasing in power, the (v) would not start. It did not appear to be a battery/starter problem. I called a tow truck tow the (v) to my house and have my husband examine it since he is a master certified Lexus diagnostic specialist. He said it may be the fuel pump, and was going to order the tools to repair it. I recalled receiving a letter about a fuel pump recall but could not locate the letter. I then did an internet research and called gm. I was told that my (v) VIN number is not part of the recall,I strongly disagree because my vehicle duplicated the recall without being fully aware of the recall description. My vehicle has been maintained since it has been in my possession and the original owner serviced the car at dublin Chevrolet in CA. This incidence could have led to a disaster for my 10 yr old daughter and I. I could have panicked and gotten stuck on the fast lane of the freeway with no power at all to my (v). We were stranded on the side of I-80 westbound freeway near barrett avenue/san pablo avenue exit for 2 hs until around midnight while waiting for a tow truck-my relative had to leave because of work, we were approached by 2 homeless while waiting for the tow truck; we were stranded in an unfavorable area of the freeway. I want my Suburban's VIN number included in their recall since it duplicated their recall description, and pay for all my towing costs. Vehicle is disabled on my driveway.

49 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/15/2005

Fuel pump failed while driving on interstate freeway causing engine to shut down. There was no warning, no 'service engine light', no fuel odors. Car had a full tank of gas, was driving at normal speed (75mph) on freeway when all engine power was lost. Car was towed to Chevrolet dealer and repaired. This is the second fuel pump for this vehicle, the original fuel pump was replaced in February 2004. Note that there is a recall on the fuel pump, issued this year, but no date when the repair will be made.

50 Fuel Pump problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 05/28/2005

The contact stated the fuel tank collapsed, crushing the fuel pump, which has been replaced twice. The fuel tank was plastic. The vent to the fuel tank was blocked and caused a vacuum which crushed the fuel pump. The first time, the vehicle was driven at 45 mph, it shut down without warning and would not restart. An indicator light illuminated, stating the computer shut down the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealership, and the fuel pump was replaced. Less than three months later while driving, the problem recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealership. The fuel pump was replaced a second time, and the vent for the fuel tank was retro fitted to the engine compartment. The vehicle has not had any more problems.

On July 26 2005, the vehicle was taken to a service dealer due to the engine misfiring, and injector issues. The dealer removed and cleaned the fuel tank, replaced the fuel modulator, the number 2 and number 7 injectors, vapor canister, vent solenoid, fuel filter, and cleaned the fuel rail lines. The repair was brought to the attention of the manufacturer, who stated that the contact was not eligible for reimbursement. The contact continued to receive recall notices for this issue to the present day.

53 Fuel Pump problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 03/04/2005

I stopped to get gas 1 mile from my house on the way to work. I filled the tank and got back in the car. When I tried to start the engine it continued to turn over but would not start. I tried 3 times. A person behind my 2001 Suburban noticed gasoline leaking beneath the car. It initially was leaking about a 1/4 gallon per minute. The fire department and hazard response team was called. The spill was limited to 2 gallons. A toe truck took the car to the dealer. The dealer determined that a short had occurred inside the fuel tank which caused the fuel pump to melt and leak to the atmosphere. The service rep (trent) told me he had not seen this before. I was also told that it was unlikely to cause a fire because it is in a low oxygen environment. However, I found several complaints about the same problem with 2001 Suburbans on the internet in less than 5 minutes of searching after returning home. The 2001 Suburban has only $44,000 miles on it. I believe this is a very serious incident needing immediate remedy from the manufacturer. The cost of the repair was $731. 01. A new fuel pump module 25315983 and filter 25171792 was installed. Cost of parts alone was $441. 88. The rest was tax and labor. In addition I paid towing cost in the amount of $ 99. 84.

57 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 02/04/2005

I was going on vacation and driving and engine died . Failure was fuel pump short and was bare wires exposed by melting same as in your NHTSA action number pe04042 and ea04026. Parts were replaced and please note that not a general motors dealership within a 100 -miles plus had the fuel pump in stock. I was told it was too expensive to stock . 58 Fuel Pump problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 01/23/2005

This is my 2nd complaint. First was odi # 10088120. Since posting that complaint, my fuel pump has failed 2 more times. I have been trying to research this on the web, and have found quite a number of similar complaints in automotive forums about fuel pumps failing in Suburbans and chevy trucks from many different years. These complaints don't seem to have made it to the NHTSA. It also seems that once the problem arises, it continues. There must be some underlying defect in the vehicle that is causing these pumps to fail. I think it is ridiculous that I will have to trade this car in because I can't keep it running, and it isn't even paid for yet.

59 Fuel Pump problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 12/23/2004

I stopped at a store, did some shopping, came back out and the truck would not start. I then called a tow truck and had it taken to a shop. The next morning I got a call from the shop that the truck started just fine. I had them run $280 worth of test to find nothing that stood out but was informed that it was probably the fuel pump. They changed the fuel filter and everything has worked since; until today. Now my truck will not start. I have read hundreds of submissions on various web sites about the failure problems of gm fuel pumps (on Suburbans) and have two good friends that have already been through this. Obviously I am going to have to have it replaced, but it should be time for gm to take responsability for a poorly designed system instead of profitting off of the consumers woes.

60 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 12/23/2004

Fuel pump failure - dangerous highway speed, stall, abrupt stall while driving at interstate speeds - very lucky to coast to construction traffic only entrance zone in area without shoulders. Almost rearended during stall out. Dealer states that fuel pump is defective and requires replacement for $700+ Chevrolet customer assistance center does not show indication that this problem is significant. 69 Fuel Pump problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 07/03/2004

After filling up with gas at sam's, I drove down to the sams store to make purchases. When I returned to my vehicle, a pool of gas was underneath and beside my Suburban causing a huge fire hazard. The fire dept. Was called to the scene and offered to escort us to our choice of repair location. The local Chevrolet dealership replaced the fuel module which they said had "gone bad" and caused fuel to be pumped out of the tank. The possible hazards to me and my family associated with this fuel leakage terrify me.

70 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/24/2004

While driving at high speed fuel pump went out on my 2000 Chevrolet Suburban which has 54. 000 mi. It was softly recommeded the fuel filter be changed at 30,000. However the dealer and gm is aware of the fuel pump problem. The repair was $812. 00 verses $34. Oo for a fuel pump. The public should know that this could occur. Many women w/children drive this vehicle. There should be a strong warning before lives are lost. But of course the dealership wouldn't profit as much if all the fuel filters were replaced. Gm refuses to own up to the problem even though there have been many incidents, why else does the fuel filter last only 30,000 miles? I was told it was my fault by c&m Chevrolet in san diego and gm, customer service. A stronger warning should take place instead of a soft suggestion to replace the fuel filter. So many women and children are use this vehicle. I know that other makes and models have a much better fuel pump life than the chevy Suburban. Is this a defect? I paid almost $40. 000, I should have purchased a Toyota.
