This is the 4th time my Suburban has been in the shop. It has a cracking pop while turning the steering wheel. While the Chevrolet dealer is pleased to fix it, it keeps happening again within 2 or 3 days of short distance driving. On some of the online forums, some dealers replaced the steering rack column. Some dealers do the alignment and the problem tends to reoccur.
We have had a clicking sound in the steering column at low speeds while turning. The dealer has replaced a bushing once and the entire column the second time, the issue is back. However, even though we are under warranty we have installed a lift on the vehicle since the second repair. Even though it was addressed twice before the lift, gm now refuses to look at the vehicle unless we take it back to stock. Clearly the lift is not the issue as it happened twice before it was installed. Furthermore, there is a gm TSB addressing the exact issue, so gm is aware there is an issue with the steering column. Also, a quick search online yields plenty of similar complaints across all similar platforms from GMC, Chevrolet and Cadillac, which once again furthers my proof the lift is not the issue. Being in the steering column I truly feel this is a safety issue and an immediate recall needs to be issued to resolve this issue. I do not have documentation from the previous repairs at this time, I am working to obtain them.
When driving over a pothole or small bump, the suspension seems to let go and the car jumps very abnormally. We only had 30k miles and I believe this is a suspension problem. The shocks make a lot of noise when we go towards a pothole. We went to the dealership to complain about the shocks and they said there was no problem with the shocks. Soon after, I had to change the front left shock because the service department said it was leaking. They did not notice this in the beginning and suddenly made me pay $650 to change the front left shock. Recently, I had to go change my right shocks and pay for that too, another $700 dollar service. It is unacceptable to have both of my front shocks changed within 1 and 1/2 year. I am not the only one who has been having these problems, several of my friends have also had this problem with this model. We have all sent forward a complaint for the noise and suspension problems. I believe it can be unsafe in the future if it is not taken care of. The steering wheel makes a lot of clinking noise when turning. We went to the dealership and had to replace the steering wheel column within a mere 20k miles. The dealership did not see any problem with the shocks or steering wheel. We currently still hear a clinking noise, as if something is broken on the inside. My warranty is over now and this needs to be fixed. This should not be a problem for a car this new at all. It is unacceptable and I should not have to go to a dealership and waste time and money on it. The seat on the right hand side has cracked two times already. The frame was cracked and we had to have it replaced within the warranty two times now. This is ridiculous and the servicemen have also noticed and said they have seen this problem as well. My warranty is now over and I cannot go back for a third time to fix it if it happens.
Faulty steering column was been replaced in October 2014 (at approx. 6000 miles) and again in March 2015 (at approx 12,500 miles).
The contact owns a 1996 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving 20 mph while towing a trailer, the trailer brakes malfunctioned causing the wheels to lock and blowing the trailer front passenger side tire. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician diagnosed that the steering column harness was underside causing one of the wires to burn out. As a result, the wiring had to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 140,000 and the current mileage was 250,000. The steering column has some flaw in it causing a loose connection on the collapsible shaft. Ge is claiming that a "corrected or revised" shaft is the fix but they are not currently paying for the "fix". This is a 2004 chevy. Suburban.

We own a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban with approximately 50,000 current miles. We purchased the vehicle used at 20,000 miles. At some point after 36000 we started noticing a "clunking" in the steering column when we would turn the wheel. I an employed at a school and it has had to have this same problem repaired on 3 of it's 2004 Chevrolet 1500 Suburbans, each with just over the 36,000 warranty mileage. Each cost about $370. 00 to repair.
This is the second time I have had to bring my 2003 Chevrolet Suburban in to replace the noisy look steering column. The first time it was repacked. The second time was this week. This time they replaced the parts inside the steering column.

Vehicle spontaneously lost all steering. Steering wheel simply rolled around on the steering column while in motion.
Steering wheel. When I start my van it wants to keep turning over. And when it finally starts, the steering wheel locks up. The car lot that I bought it from says there's nothing that they can find that would cause this problem. But it keeps accruing. This has nothing to do with the dealer. They didn't make my van, gm motors did. I want to make it clear that the dealers service department was great.

I have a 2003 Chevrolet suburan, 4x4. I purchased this vehicle used 9/2004. It has developed a rattle/clunking noise in the sterring column. I called the dealer, and was informed they have had many complaints about this, and the intermediate steering column needs to be removed and greased, and or replaced. I would think something as important as "steering" column problems would result in a recall. Please help!!.
The steering column u joint that connects to the steering box has loosened causing a clunking in the steering wheel. The u-joint has not failed as of this time, but a failure or binding could easily result in the loss of control of the vehicle. The dealerships are aware that there is a common problem with this part and offer a "grease kit" to remedy the problem. However, grease will not take the play out of a loose u-joint. This is a cover-up remedy to make the looseness less obvious. The dealership wants over $300 for a replacement part alone and claims it is a restricted part since it is part of the energy absorbing system in the event of a collision. The looseness was first noticeable with only 13000 miles on the vehicle. The problem has continued to worsen since first noticed.
Re defective steering column for a 2003 chevy Suburban, reply attn esther clark. The consumer took the vehicle to have it inspected and he was informed the intermediate shaft was defective. The consumer was then told the part was on national backorder and it took over several months for the part to arrive.
Steering intermediate shaft defective. The steering column was barely attached by 1 loose pin. No answer required - see response to odi ref. No. 10109124.
My 2001 chevy Suburban made a clunking noise in the steering column. I took it to the dealer and they lubed the steering column intermediate shaft for $110. 00. When I got home I looked this problem up on the internet and found lots of complaints and there is a service bulletin about this problem and a replacement shaft to correct what appears to be a factory defect. I can not find the service bulletin and would appreciate some help on finding it. I feel that I should be reimbursed for the work done and want my vehicle to get the replacement shaft.

Complaint received via e-mail. I visited the local Chevrolet dealership service department. The previous day I had taken my 2003 Suburban purchased new from the local dealer to an independent repair service shop to find out what was wrong with my truck. I was advised I had a lot of slack and vibration at both ends of my steering column. I had loud popping noise coming from this area while driving. When the wheels turned they did not turn smoothly, but roughly, and jumped in the turning process as though it stopped and started continuously. The repair shop had sincere concerns that this problem could be very dangerous, and since the vehicle was still under full bumper to bumper warranty, they recommended that I take it back to the local dealer. The service dealership knew exactly what was wrong, and stated that it was a very common problem with this type of vehicle. Mechanic had to order the repair parts, which would take 3 to 4 weeks. Nevertheless, I waited for the dealership to call me when the parts came in. After over a month I called title back, and he again said it could be 3 or 4 weeks before they come in, and they would call me. As of the date of this letter I never been notified that these parts were received. Apparently, they could not get the parts needed to do the warranty repairs. The consumer stated that the wheels jump when the vehicle is turning.
While driving at 25 mph consumer heard a popping sound coming from under the hood of the vehicle. Then, the consumer was unable to steer. Consumer was able to spin the steering wheel on the column without turning the tires.
Steering wheel does not return to straight after making a sharp turn.

When the steering wheel was turned or vehicle driven over a pump in the road entire steering wheel and column shook. Vehicle was taken to a dealership, who acknowledged the problem and packed the steering column. The problem recurred a year later. The manufacturer was contacted, but didn't acknowledge the problem.

the consumers mechanic determined the problem was caused by the high speed steering control located on the steering column. The mechanic disconnected the control from the electrical plug. The consumer stated the loss of steering has ceased.

The steering column is off center to the right, which means if the air bag is needed it will not protect the body in the center. Petition sent to exec sect. . . . Consumer purchased a 2002 chevy tahoe and a 2002 chevy Suburban. Both vehicles steering column was off center. The consumer's mother drove the Suburban and when she took it back to the dealership, she sat in four other Suburban's. Three out of the four were worse than her vehicle. The fourth one was off center to the left. Another family member leased a trailblazer and that vehicle is fine. The consumer leased three other chevy express vans and they are fine. All vehicles were leased at the same place. Consumer was told no defect when the vehicles were first returned to the dealership.
