Loss of steering, jerks the week right out of your hand and then you are unable to turn the wheel. Engine stalls and you have to try to coast to the side of the road, put in park and try to restart the vehicle. Service stabilitrak warning appears on display, alarm sounds, radio beeps and display goes blank, navigation compass does not work. There is a current technical service bulletin for these issues: #18-na-161, document id 5075841 that lists the years from 2014 to 2020. There were product safety recalls issued: 17276 loss of steering assist, reference number:n172085440 for vehicles listed in this TSB for 2014 and 2015 but no recalls for later vehicles with the same problems.

I was in the middle of a turn and the power steering went completely out.
Incident report vehicle information: year: 2016 make: Chevrolet model: Suburban I am experiencing a recurring issue with my 2016 Chevrolet Suburban involving the steering column lock module and the theft deterrent system. The truck intermittently fails to start, displaying a "theft deterrent" warning message on the dashboard and lighting get dim on the display. On some occasions, after waiting approximately 10 minutes, the vehicle starts, but other times it does not. Additionally, there are instances when the truck starts but cannot be shifted into gear. To address the problem, I have attempted to disconnect and reconnect the battery to reset the system, but this has not resolved the issue. The problem appears randomly and unpredictably, creating significant inconvenience and safety concerns, particularly in situations where I am stranded or unable to move the vehicle. Impact on safety: this issue poses a risk to my safety and the safety of others. The inability to reliably start or move the vehicle could lead to dangerous situations, especially in emergencies or high-traffic areas. It is also concerning that the theft deterrent system may be malfunctioning, potentially leaving the vehicle vulnerable to unauthorized access. Resolution attempts: despite attempting to reset the system by disconnecting the battery, the issue persists. Online forums and anecdotal evidence suggest that this may be a common problem with the steering column lock module or related systems in this model. Request for action: I urge the NHTSA to investigate this issue as it appears to affect multiple owners of similar vehicles. A thorough review and possible recall or service bulletin could ensure the safety and reliability of affected vehicles.
When driving the vehicle and when turning the steering wheel in reverse or pulling forward while turning the steering wheel. The dashboard will display a stability warning and the vehicle turns off and the steering wheel locks. It has happened two times in the last year and twice in 2023.
While driving approximately 70 miles an hour and trying to switch lanes, we got a stabilitrack warning and the car shut off for a second and then came back on. The weather was nice and there was no snow or any other adverse conditions. This happened a couple more times on the ride and then when we tried to turn into a parking spot it shut off completely and we had to restart it. We turned stabilitrack off and the car was ok for a couple of short drives. Then driving late at late and we passed another car the same thing happened. Then when we tried to turn our brights on we got the same message. Then we got a brake assist message and then we got a collision alert. The headlights were flickering the rest of the drive and we couldnt use our brights. We had our 4 children in the car and it was shutting down at high speeds and very scary. I looked up our VIN and it said that the recalls had been worked on but I dont remember this being done. This has never happended before this. Our car would be available for inspection if needed.

The contact owns a 2020 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving at a moderate rate of speed, the steering wheel hardened without warning. The contact stated that the steering wheel returned to normal operation upon depression of the brake pedal. A week later as the contact's husband was also driving at a moderate rate of speed, the steering wheel hardened again without warning. Recently, the contact stated that while driving at 50 mph, the "service power steering drive with care" warning message appeared on the instrument panel. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000.

Vehicle lost power steering turning a tight left into a parking space at a low speed on 5/18/2024. A second later, the engine and all electrical in the vehicle went dead. The steering locked and nothing electrical in the vehicle was functional. Based on the online information and comments found, this is a significant problem with the 2015 Suburban. The GMC recall number is 14743. The recall was for replacement of the power steering assist motor kit. When I look up my vehicle on the recall listing there are no recalls for my vehicle. There is an obvious problem which is effecting these vehicles and dealers shouldn't question the safety implications of steering and engine failure while the vehicle is moving.
It started with a glitch with the radio/navigation system flashing back and forth and not working. The cooling fan on the vehicle would run for about 10 minutes. The blind spot warning would blink on and off and there was no one else on the road. Then two days later the check engine light came on for about 5 days. Then three days later there was a loss of battery power and the indication light came on stating the car was in battery save mode. Then two days later the power steering system was lost on the highway and all the warning lights on the dash were flashing. The car stalled and refused to start. The tow truck driver tried to jump the vehicle with a battery pack that would jump a diesel and he only got enough power to put the car in neutral.
While turning at low speed steering went out engine shut off dash gauges, radio, hvac went off engine restarted dash information stated service trailer brake system and service stability system turned wheel again same thing did this 2 more times then had to put vehicle in natural and restart manually this also has happened twice in the past week.
The power steering on the vehicle had failed on December 10th, 2023. The sign was displayed on the dashboard for the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to sunrise chevy and stayed with them for a month for repair and they have been unable to repair the issue. They said the rack and pinion had gone bad on this brand new car. This is very dangerous as the safety of myself as well as others on the road are compromised due to faulty steering problems.

We have suddenly experienced a problem with our 2019 Suburban, seemingly identical to a problem that plagued 2015 gm light trucks and suvs (NHTSA campaign number: 18v586. Gm's own number for this recall is 18289). At low speeds (typically parking lots, under 5 mph), when turning, we intermittenly lose power steering. This is more common when switching directions rapidly such as during a parking maneuver. Simultaneously, headlights and interior lights intermittenly dim. The instrument cluster screen will display random warning messages (“roll window down then up”, etc). The clock time resets as though the battery was disconnected. Our 2019 Suburban has only 68,000 miles and has received all scheduled maintenance. The battery was recently replaced in September 2022 (14 months ago). I have inspected the wiring and found nothing lose.

Technician - was unable to perform test drive of vehicle. Inspected operation & found; vehicle will not turn over, battery very weak. Removed battery, put on charger for approximately 45 minutes. Reinstalled battery. Vehicle had power but did not start. Was unable to get shifter into neutral. Found engine still not turning over. Found starter motor making clicking sounds. Got to turn over once but was very labored, but did not start. Disconnected shift cable at transmission and rolled vehicle into shop for diagnostic. - scanned computer control modules & found; approximately 30 codes total in multiple modules, with high and low voltage codes. - inspected & found; performed basic electrical faulty tracing. Performed battery test, voltage was low at 16%. Battery(new fy22) failed load test. Found starter making "thunking and clicking" sounds. Unable to move shift lever out of park position. Let battery charge an additional 1 hour and found battery failed testing. Tester states "short" which indicates internal failure. Tested starter draw, found excessive draw at 400amps, spec is 70-120amps. After testing tried to start. Engine turned over slowly for approximately 1 second and then made clicking sounds. Found body module voltage codes returned. Verified engine does turn over when manually turned with breaker bar. Further shift lock issues or other issues. Technician removed and replaced the starter assembly and the battery. Found engine started up and ran. Verified repair. Found shift lock still not working. Shifter will not leave the park position. Performed testing. Verified transmission will shift to drive and to reverse. Verified brake switch working properly and sending signal out to abs module. Verified shift cable not frozen. Found no fault tracing available for this type of shift lock. Eliminated other possibilities which indicates the issue is with the shift lock actuator/gear shifter. Determined/suspect; the shift lock actuator/gear shifter is faulty.

The computer component surged, and the vehicle is available for inspection. The vehicle brake function is lost. Stepping on the brake paddle did not apply brake. Brake function was disabled by the computer. I took the vehicle to dealer, they said it was a component that has high resistance that cause it. But not sure why it has high resistance at that time and the resistance is gone after driver restarted the vehicle. No one else inspected the component beside the dealership. There was no warning at all and this is the first time it happens. Driver was just driving normally and suddenly all the light in the instructment panel started blinking and driver tried to apply brake but nothing happen. Luckly it wasn't rush hour, and driver was able to let the vehicle roll to the freeway exit on ram and use the up ram to slow the vehicle until it almost stop and changed gear to park to stop the vehicle. Driver then restarted the vehicle and the problem is gone.

Periodically the steering goes away and makes the vehicle hard to maneuver and I also get some warning lights with it.
While slowing down to make a left hand turn at an intersection, my vehicle suddenly lost power steering and the entire system completely shut down. There was no electronic function during that time. I had to put the vehicle in park, turn the key to the off position and then start it back up. It has happened multiple times, both at low speeds in drive and reverse. This would have caused a collision if there was oncoming traffic at the intersection at that time.
While driving the vehicle on a freeway ramp at speed a warning light came on that said service trailer breaking and the power steering turned off. Causing the vehicle to be very difficult to control at highway speed. Having a secondary auxiliary system turn off your power steering at speed is a serious safety hazard and design issue.
The steering wheel heater turned on unexpectedly (it was 70 degrees outside) when I started the car this morning. The wheel was hot to the touch. To turn it off I had to turn it on and then off again. I am worried it may have a short or be a fire hazard if it is on all the time or without being turned on by a sensor or the driver.

I have a 2008 Suburban. Beginning in August, there was an accident on the highway and traffic was backed up. I was idling, waiting for the traffic to move, like every other car on the hightway and the Suburban just shut off and said "stablitrak off. " it happened numerous times after this, just when idling. I took to the dealership I bought it at. They charged a ton to fix something but it didn't' take care of the problem. It's gotten so much worse. I took back a few months ago and they fixed it again, but didn't charge us this time. Now it's so much worse. Anytime I'm iding, just picking my daughter up at school or just stopped at a red light, a warning comes across, "service stabilitrak" or "stablitrak off. " and the car immediately shuts off. It usually restarts in 5 minutes or so and I can usually make it to my destination as long as I don't idle again. Monday I was picking up my daughter and it stalled in the parking lot at her high school with tons of cars behind me- I waited, restarted it as I have done in the past. But then, going down this steep high school hill, the car shut off, lost steering and brakes wouldn't even work. I had teen drivers ahead of me that I nearly crashed into, teens in my car. This is not ok. We took it back to the dealership and now they say it's an electrical problem. I've read a ton online forums that this is something that happens with a lot of other people. I'm afraid to drive my car. I'm also not sure what to get fixed because these other people have spent tons of money, just like me with no results.

My car shut off two times while driving. When you google the issue, it auto populates meaning that this is a very common issue with gm. It starts back to 2015 searches as well. Gm needs to recall their Suburbans for their cars turning off while driving which caused me to lose power steering, power brakes and anything that requires electrical.
There is a technical service bulletin published (15-na-082) that is the result of insufficient welds between the bracket and frame rail that hold the sway bar on the models listed in the TSB. Recently while on a road trip we experienced heavy (almost uncontrollable) truck swaying while on the high way. I now have to find someone with welding experience in order to fix this problem because I am concerned about the safety of my family driving this vehicle with this condition. Please consider a recall for this condition.

Vehicle starts dinging with warning - service trailer brake system - and warning - action required steering assist is reduced drive with care - abs light - traction control. Power steering goes out and assumedly abs and traction control stop working.
My rear left tire locks when I’m doing sharp turns and I don’t see any traction control lights come on when that happens.
When driving at highway speeds or even around town the vehicle randomly jerks to one side or another alignment was just done and was told all was good tires are new pitman armor place ball joints replaced still having the issue of it darting specially when going around curves it wants to pull vehicle to the ditch and I look like I am driving drunk which I'm not I've had my mechanic try to inspect the issue he couldn't find it I heard they're made possibly be a TSB out for it but it's hidden.

The power steering locks up at random times while I am driving my vehicle. It seems to be temporary loss of power steering because it eventually starts working again. It feels almost impossible to turn the car when this happens. I searched online and found there had been a recall on the eps (electric power steering) for this exact issue. I called the local dealership, they told me after searching my VIN that the recall had already taken place in 2019. The repair or recall that was done did not fix the problem.
I have three occasions where I have been turning and my steering wheel locks up and is very hard to turn. I almost crashed twice. I have three young children in the car. I could not get out of the way fast enough but luckily avoided a crash.
Vehicle loses power steering when turning at slow speeds which was part of a recall from 2018. Reflashing the module didn't fix the issue and has been doing it again for a year now except that now it occasionally loses power as well and has twice lost power while I was turning and oncoming traffic coming at me. Gm is saying it is not the same issue as the prior recall, but I disagree and that the work done prior didn't fix the safety hazard. An 8 year old vehicle shouldn't be losing power while driving to where the battery cables have to all be replaced. That should have been the work gm did back when they first put out the recall for the loss of power steering.
So my 2015 when I’m slow drive 5mph give it take the steering wheel locks up parking assist lights come on my ac turns off and my screen shuts down.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds the electrical power would suddenly shut off and the steering wheel would forceful jerk and became difficult to turn. The dashboards lights would turn off and the audible bell would chime. The contact indicated that during the failure the engine had remained operable. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who replaced the battery and the failure was remedied but later reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure and no service was performed. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 117,000.
When driving with the 4x4 switch in the auto setting the car would jerk while driving at high speeds. Almost seemed like the left front tire would engage on dry pavement. Also there is a loss of steering while the vehicle is in motion. Speed does not change when it happens. Seems to happen more when driving around a corner. Loss of steering happened for a split second or multiple seconds.
Driving at a slow speed and lost power steering due to faulty power steering module went into oncoming traffic and drove off road to avoid collision. Recalled 3 years ago for software update but problem happened again and gm would not cover repair.
The car was slowly making right hand turn when we heard a loud noise and stopped the car once we got out, we saw that right wheel was completely torn out. We have videos and pictures. If it would happened on the higher speed, we would be dead. The car shop told us that they never seen anything like that in the past. Per their report, upper control arm broke off then the rest followed: lower control arm, ball joint, outer tie rod, poss inner tie rod, sway bar link, abs sensor connector.
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel became stiff, and the vehicle lost automotive power. The check engine, seat belt, stabili-trak, and abs warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was occasionally towed and taken to the same local dealer on several occasions, where it was diagnosed; however, the failure was not yet determined. The transmission, fuel pump, battery, alternator, and unknown wiring were replaced at the consumer's expense; however, the failure persisted. In addition, the contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 18v586000 (steering); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 117,000.
The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost power steering assist. The contact stated that the failure was only experienced whenever the vehicle was slowed to approximately 5 mph. During the failure, the steering wheel locked up. The contact stated that after shifting into reverse the vehicle would return to normal operation. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 250,000.
