Air Bag Problems of Chevrolet Tahoe - part 1

I am having power steering issues. I reached out to Chevrolet and they said in their system the recall was performed in 2019 prior to me purchasing the vehicle in 2021. I should not have to pay for an issue that was recalled. I’m unaware of what was done prior to my purchase of the vehicle in 2021.

I purchased a 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe on March 8, 2026, in [xxx] . After the sale, I discovered that the vehicle has serious undisclosed safety defects, including evidence that the airbag (supplemental restraint system) had previously deployed and was not properly repaired or restored to working condition, and were actually cut and removed from the vehicle and glued and covered up. This defect was not disclosed prior to purchase and represents a significant safety hazard. It is available for inspection. This put my safety and others at risk because if I had not noticed that the airbag system was not working and was removed and if I had been in a wreck who knows the injuries that me or somebody else could have sustained. The problem has not been confirmed or reproduced by anybody other than me I have physical documentation pictures and diagnostic reports showing the issue. The vehicle has not been inspected by police manufacturer or insurance as of yet but will be completed in the very near future. There was an airbag warning light on on the dash of the vehicle when I purchased it my assumption that it was just an error or a warning since I knew that the vehicle had been in a minor incident but I would’ve never thought that all of the airbags would’ve been cut out and hidden in the vehicle. Through my own investigation, I also located what appears to be the seller’s facebook marketplace account, where he has dozens of vehicles listed under a personal profile. This suggests he may be operating as an unlicensed vehicle dealer (curbstoning) and potentially selling multiple vehicles with undisclosed defects. I have attempted to resolve this matter directly by sending a formal demand letter and allowing time for response, but the seller has failed to respond or offer any resolution and has ceased communication. Component/system failure the supplemental restraint system (srs) failed to function as designed. Specifically, the driver steering wheel airbag and front passenger airbag did not deploy during a collision involving frontal impact forces. The vehicle is currently retained by the insurance carrier and is available for inspection upon request. Safety risk the failure of the srs materially increased the risk of serious bodily injury or fatality to the vehicle occupants. The driver experienced neck pain, persistent headaches, shoulder pain, back pain, weakness, cognitive fog, and a seatbelt-related neck abrasion, consistent with unmitigated crash forces. A minor passenger was present in the vehicle and was also exposed to increased injury risk due to the lack of airbag deployment. Confirmation or reproduction of the problem unknown. The airbag failure has not yet been evaluated by a dealer or independent service center to determine root cause. Inspections conducted the vehicle will be inspected by insurance representatives in connection with the collision claim. A police report was completed at the time of the accident. The manufacturer has not yet inspected the vehicle or srs components. Warnings or prior symptoms no airbag warning lights, srs indicators, messages, or fault alerts were present prior to the collision. The vehicle previously underwent a manufacturer safety recall repair related to airbags, completed by an authorized repair facility more than one year before the accident. No post-repair warnings or abnormalities were observed prior to the collision. Additional safety concern despite recall compliance, both front airbags failed to deploy, raising concerns of defective components, improper recall repair, or system malfunction. This failure warrants further investigation to determine whether similar vehicles may present an ongoing safety risk.

Vehicle continues to experience flashing air bag light and service self-restraint system warning. Brought in twice in 2025 for self-restraint system but dealer refuses to cover under warranty. On December 18, 2025, experienced complete power and electrical failure while in transit on a turning lane. The vehicle was unable to start, or open any windows, and the transmission would not shift back into park or neutral while obstructing traffic near an active railroad. Vehicle battery was replaced and was able to safely put vehicle into gear. Vehicle battery replacement allowed for normal driving; however, from that date on the transmission started shifting harder and jerkier. On December 31, 2025, vehicle was being driven on the freeway to then experience difficult shifting and reduced power. Subsequently, the drive indicator began flashing red and a service transmission indication appeared. There has been at least three instances, since vehicle purchased, where sudden loss of power and control of the vehicle in motion has occured.

The contact stated that the crash was a single vehicle crash and there was severe damage to the front of the vehicle. The contact stated that the air bags should have deployed but failed to deploy. The contact stated that medical attention was needed, and his brother was currently in the trauma icu after recently having back surgery. The contact stated that a police report was filed but was not yet finalized. The contact was waiting to speak with the police officer who filed the report. No further information was available. We were sitting in a parking lot with the engine running and heard an explosion in the vehicle. Later we discovered that the left rear, side curtain air bag had deployed. Horn has been inoperable for months cruise control hasn't worked in years steering wheel radio controls don't work. No appointment reason for any of it. Keeps saying service safety restraints system for air bag constantly keeps coming up as a safety issue while driving.

On October 23 I was driving my vehicle and the airbag light and a message service safety restraint appeared. On October 24 I was in route to take the vehicle to the dealership and as I was merging going to the highway the vehicle turned off, lost complete power threw itself into neutral. I had to drive it over to the shoulder to keep from getting hit. I was able to get the vehicle to turn back on and got it to the dealership. This would be the third time that the vehicle has lost power and completely turned off while driving the first time I took it to the dealership. They said they couldn’t find anything wrong. The second time this happened. I took it to the dealership. They said they replaced the gateway module this third time I took it to the dealership they have called me and said they need to replace the onstar telecommunication module. The vehicle is unsafe. It is a brand new 2024 Tahoe I purchased it new. The vehicle should not be turning off while I’m driving the same messages consistently pop up the airbag in the service safety restraint. They replaced some kind of console at the top and say that that would fix the issue, but it didn’t because the message came back on again the vehicle idols as if it’s gonna turn off whenever I go to stop the vehicle the transmission stutters are like it’s going into a downshift and it acts like he wants to turn off, but it doesn’t it’s only turned off when I’m driving and then it will just shut off.

I have 2 gm vehicles that the airbag light came on within 3 days of each other and neither has had any such issue ever. [xxx] 2010 chevy Tahoe ltz with 285,000 miles [xxx] 2011 chevy silverado LS with only 88,500 miles local dealership wants $180. 00 each just to check out the issue I just think this is very coincidental. Dealer has advised that replacement of airbag will result in damage to interior parts and trim and that replacement parts are not available and that the dealer will not be responsible for replacement and repair of damage. I have refused the warranty replacement until a dealer can be located that will not damage car interior.

The contact owned a 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that while driving on a winding road during a rainstorm at 15 mph, she briefly lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway, coming to a complete stop after colliding with a tree. The impact of the collision was severe that the front passenger side wheel became detached. The air bags did not deploy. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who had yet to determine why the air bags did not deploy, however, the contact was informed that the vehicle may be deemed a total loss by her insurance provider. A police report was not filed, but minor injuries were reported, which the contact attributed to the fact that the air bags did not deploy. The contact sustained a small bruise on her chin and a contusion across her chest, but did not seek medical treatment immediately following the accident. Surprisingly enough, the chest contusion had yet to heal 2 weeks after the injury was sustained. Alarmed, the contact consulted her primary care physician, who then scheduled an x-ray for a later date. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

The contact owned a 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph straight during heavy traffic, the vehicle was t-boned and crashed into a second vehicle, causing severe damage to the front end of the vehicle. During crash the air bag did not deploy. The contact sustained fractured ribs and an injured neck and was transported via ambulance to the local hospital. A police report was taken, and the vehicle was destroyed and towed away. The cause of the failure was not determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 29,900.

I wanted to express a concern regarding my vehicle. There are several wires exposed on my dashboard where multiple cracks have developed over time. I have been hesitant to bring the vehicle in for the airbag recall replacement because I am concerned that the existing damage to the dashboard could worsen during the repair process. My primary worry is that additional cracking could expose more wiring to heat, which may increase the risk of electrical issues, wire corrosion, or even a potential fire hazard. The safety system needs serviced/repaired and the alert has been present for months, and investigated by gm licensed dealership but not repaired, after several requests. The safety of drivers and passengers has been neglected and the high risk for injury and death while occupying the 2021 chevy Tahoe. Also on 06/11/2025 the eps power steering system failed, with the system alert showing up on the driver's dash. This is a cause for major concern and is noted that 2021 chevy Tahoe vehicles have an outstanding recall for those affected. The licensed gm dealership was contacted on 06/12/2025 and again, denied the repair and/or ability for the vehicle to be operated safely. The Tahoe has been taken to the shop over the last 12-16 months and as of this day, occupants of this vehicle are at very high risk for injury and death due to the service safety system alert and the failed eps system. I am compelled to take additional action, to prevent injury and death unless these issues are able to be immediately resolved.

I have a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe. It is one of the thousands of which the plastic dash has cracked into pieces. My concern is that the loose plastic will hurt someone if the airbag is deployed. Gm should have never used such flimsy plastic on the dashes of so many vehicles.

I was in a rollover crash on 3/9/25. I hit the guardrail head on, then completely rolled the vehicle multiple times. The driver/steering wheel airbag did not deploy. Curtain airbags, and the airbag from the seat deployed but the steering wheel did not. My head hit the steering wheel as a result with injuries to my face. The airbag malfunction was confirmed by a mechanic.

The contact owned a 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact received notifications and cards of NHTSA campaign number: 21v053000 (air bags) and would like to be removed from the recall distribution list because the vehicle was totaled. The dealer was contacted. The manufacturer was not contacted.

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that the passenger’s side air bag warning light was illuminated while starting the vehicle. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The independent mechanic determined that the passenger’s side sensing system had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact was advised by the mechanic that there was a recall associated to the failure, NHTSA campaign number: 06v417000 (air bags). The mechanic referred the contact to a dealer for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact had checked the NHTSA. Gov website and became aware that the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 136,000.

Two issues: 1) vehicle indicates to service safety restraint system yet onstar diagnostic monthly report says system is fine. The service restraint system notice intermittently goes on and off while driving frequently. Unable to confirm if air bag systems are active while driving. 2) vehicle was being driven in fast lane around 70 mph and experienced immediate loss of acceleration power while trying to pass semi-tractor. Onboard alert indicates reduced acceleration drive with care. Error code says something is wrong with the coolant control valve. Some servicers indicate they have a backlog of over 1+ month before can diagnose.

Service safety restraint system notification is coming on, vehicle has 45,000 miles on it.

I confirmed the vehicle has a recall. Called the dealer and they informed me that the dash may crack while performing the recall but is not included in the recall. Any cracks in the dash would be customer pay. This doesn't seem right.

Air bags did not deploy after significant frontal damage. No warning that the air bag sensor was bad.

Vehicle 1 pulled out into vehicle 2s lane and cut them off causing vehicle 2 to slam on the breaks causing my vehicle ( vehicle 3 ) to collide into the back of vehicle 2. No emergency breaking a-curd and no airbags deployed durring contact at rate of speed of 45-60mph. Total damage to vehicle 2 rear end and total damage to vehicle 3 front end.

The contact was concerned that due to the illuminated air bag warning light, the air bag may erroneously deploy while operating the vehicle. The failure mileage was 212,000.

7 weeks after purchase of my new 2024 Tahoe the check engine light came on, showing safety restraint system compromised and then I lost all sound and entertainment features. 4 months later and my car is still sitting in parts at the dealership because wiring harness is on back order.

Dash cover is falling apart, a well known defect. I worry that an airbag deployment could cause dangerous shrapnel to be projected throughout the passenger compartment causing injuries like skin cuts and eye injuries.

I got into a bad accident 3 weeks ago. I flipped 4 times and not one air bag deployed. I suffer some injuries.

I was driving down the street and all side airbags deployed out of nowhere, the seats belts that were not occupied locked, the seat belts that were occupied did not lock. The vehicle was able to drive to safety. The back latch would not open to allow me to remove my stroller.

I contacted don mealey Chevrolet in clairmont FL and was informed by them they can do air bag recall. But I must sign a waver if the dash crackes in the process they are not responsible for damages and I will have to pay for dash if I want it fixed. Why would I be responsible if this is a recall. I contacted Chevrolet and was informed its a case by case thing and they will not guarantee dash being fixed. Why would I want to chance this.
