You can not lower the spare tire, under the vehicle, this is a big problem and I am not the only person with this problem, the part that holds the spare tire has a spring loaded lock on it that cannot release because of a bad design off it,their is a video on youtube about it (good information about it) you need to cut the tire down with a cutting torch, this is a bad idea around a gas tank, I can not express how mad I am right now because I can't even think of that many cuss words, and it is going into heart a tack mode, I would love to meet the engineer that designed this, and have him change the tire, first you need a tow truck then a shop with a lift then two mechanics if not three and you then need a transmission jack to put upward pressure on the tire to release the tension of the locking device that holds the tire, after you let the air out of the tire, I can overhaul the engine and the transmission and anything else that need to be done to this or any other car,but this is a big big mistake in design, can you imagine a lady having to change a tire on the side of the road!!! if a mechanic (male or female) cant do it,how can the average consumer, do it? and why hasn't this been a recall,I know why it hasn't because people are forced to pay for it and forget it,well I bought the vehicle without looking for this problem because my wife and daughters and sons have all been properly trained on how to handle this problem, but it can't be done on this vehicle or any other chevy vehicle of this make from what I understand, you can not do this safely,no I don't have a flat tire either I was just explaining to the wife that it may be a little different so I wanted her to see it just incase she had a problem and she would be prepared on how to handle it (wrong) it should take ten or fifteen minutes to do, can't be done, and I can't believe it please contact me.

My mechanic was putting air in the spare tire underneath the vehicle and the cable broke and the tire fell on him. Luckily, he was not injured badly.

Tl-the contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe equipped with tbc sigma stampede radial SUV tires, size p265/70/r16. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 -60 mph, she noticed that the vehicle was driving awkwardly. After stopping and inspecting the vehicle, she discovered that the rear driver's side tire failed. The vehicle was repaired by an independent mechanic who installed the spare tire. The dealer was contacted and they offered her a pro-rate for a new tire. The vehicle was later replaced with a new tire. The manufacturer was not contacted. In addition, the contact recently noticed a crack in the front passenger side tire. The dealer was contacted and a replacement tire was ordered. The failure mileage on the tires was unknown. The failure mileage on the vehicle was approximately 143,312. Kmj.

Gm/Chevrolet customer service will not correct safety issue with spare tire. Gm/Chevrolet customer service will not put response in writing. Gm/Chevrolet customer service will not discuss mixing of bridgestone and goodyear belt designs. The spare is not a "dummy tire" and is not a "fully operational spare" per gm. The spare cannot be used in 4wd, if spare used in 4wd warranty is voided. Gm/Chevrolet mixes tire mfg, tire design, tire # belts on drive tires and "spare". This is an unsafe act. The four drive tires are bridgestone dueller hl alenza p275-55r20 (2poly/2steel/1nylon belt). The spare tire is a goodyear wrangler hp p265-70r17 (2poly/2steel belt) (mfg design is fully operational) spare. Gm/Chevrolet had no disclosure about the odd spare category prior to purchase and not noted in window sticker. Owner manual is unclear about the spare and avoids any facts about the spare being goodyear and drive tires are bridgestone design. Gm/Chevrolet has created a third category for a spare: "bobo". Type 1 is fully operational spare, type 2 is a dummy spare (not fully operation), and type 3 is new and is a bobo spare, appears to be a fully operational tire but gm states not fully operational (and not a dummy tire too). There is absolutely no reason for gm to not have a bridgestone dueller hl alenza p265-70r17 tire on the spare rim, instead of a goodyear wrangler hpp265-70r17 tire. This would make all tires on the Tahoe bridgestone dueller hl alenza design/belts.

Spare tire missing. I believe the cable snapped and the spare tire fell off while vehicle was in motion creating a danger to other vehicles. I do not know if this caused a crash or injury to other drivers. I do not have a date of the incident.
I was sitting at a drive up window at my bank when a man knocked on my window and asked if that was my tire on the ground. My spare tier had fallen off of the vehicle. I took my 2001 chevy Tahoe to my repair man and he said that the cable rusted away that mounts the spare under the vehicle. I still have the rusted peice that attaches to the cable and it is all rust. The vehicle is only 7 years old and I have to wonder how many other SUV or trucks that are aging are going to have this problem. I sent an e-mail to GMC two days ago but I have not heard from them. Please let me know what I can do to make people aware of this problem becasuse I can not stop thinking about what if I was on the highway and my tire killed someone and how many other vehicles on the roads are in this same condition. My taho is going in this week to have a new cable put on but there needs to be a different set up so that if the cable rots away or breaks these tires will not just fall off.
While driving 65 mph the spare tire cable snapped which caused the spare tire to fall off from under the truck.
This tire blew up while I was driving my 4 children on 87north. I was able to retain control of the car although I was petrified. The tow guy could not change the tire because the explosion ruined the hoist mechanism to access the spare tire. We were flatbedded to a reapir shop. We had to buy a temporary tire. The next day we replaced all four tires with michelin tires, never wanting to own firestone tires again. Everyone who saw the tire said I was very lucky that the car didn't flip and that we did not incur serious injuries. I was very thankful that a potentially serious situation did not result in severe injuries. This tire was clearly defective. I want people to know this so they don't get hurt. I have requested that firestone reimburse us $666. 83 for the expenses involved in this ordeal. Sincerely, lisa quattrocchi. (tiresize: p265/70r16).

After purchasing vehicle, found that tires were of all of different sizes. Vehicle has four goodyear 17 inch tires installed, the spare tire which is a firestone has a 16 inch wheel, owners manual states that driving with different size tires is dangerous, therefore, owner feels manufacturer should be held responsible for installing tires that are all the same size.
The spare tire does not come off the back of the truck.
