The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe. While driving approximately 47 mph, the steering wheel vibrated without warning. The contact mentioned that the failure only occurred when driving less than 55 mph. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the bearing, gear kit, gasket and seal needed to be replaced and the drive shaft needed to be re-balanced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to another dealer where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion, bearing, gear kit, seal and gasket needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 21,084.

2 Steering Pinion Shaft problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 12/07/2004

This complaint was received via e-mail. Heard some noise in the steering from the day he bought the 2003 Tahoe when turning steering wheel and when backing out of driveway. The clanking noise only started about 4 weeks ago, and became worse quickly. The clanking noise could be felt through the steering wheel at slower speeds, especially when turning steering wheel. It felt like something was loose. Took vehicle in for service on 1/03/05 with 28,400 miles, and dealer knew immediately what the problem was. They said it was a common problem with this model. In fact, some people reported this problem as early as 5,000 miles. They removed the steering shaft, packed it with grease, and the clanking noise stopped. When not under warranty the repairs would cost between $75- s100. Researched the problem on the internet and found many similar complaints. The consumer was told a steering shaft was needed, however it was on back order.

3 Steering Pinion Shaft problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 10/13/2004

While driving, the steering wheel vibrated uncontrollably. The consumer drove to the dealer to have it inspected and the mechanic informed the consumer that the steering rack and pinion shaft needed to be replaced. Please fill in additional information.
