Chevrolet Trailblazer owners have reported 238 problems related to other fuel system tank assembly (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Fuel leakage from fuel tank. Very noticeable after fueling up, and when it's warm outside. Fuel smell and visible fluid dripping from the fuel tank. Vehicle isn't safe to drive, and gm is unwilling to cover the cost for the poor quality of the design of the fuel tanks. It's a known problem that gm and it's dealerships try to pass the bill for repair onto the consumer.

Gas tank is leaking . I get a letter from general motor about that problem I took the truck to crystal Chevrolet the manager told he would not work on my truck.
While driving my vehicle in December 2015 I received a "service engine soon" display. I took the SUV to a service center who informed me my fuel tank was cracked & needed to be replaced. They ordered a new tank but have not been able to obtain the part. While researching the situation, I found record of an NHTSA investigation (action # pe07014) conducted in 2007 for the same problem, involving the same make, model & year as my vehicle in which gm was supposed to send letters to owners & repair the fuel tanks free of charge. I never received the notification and reached out to gm customer service to find out why, file a report and expressing my grave concerns regarding the safety issues of driving a vehicle in this condition. Over the course of approximately two weeks of communication, I was advised my VIN wasn't included in the action therefore they wouldn't have notified me, it was past the mileage warranty & they won't extend it, the part is on backorder and the soonest it might be available is may, they won't provide a temporary repair or loaner vehicle, there's nothing further they can do and they're closing the file on my complaint. They were however, willing to offer a potential discount on a new vehicle. I advised them I was not in a position to purchase a vehicle and that wasn't an appropriate solution to the problem.
On 12/15/15 I dropped off my 2003 chevy Trailblazer based on a bulletin that I received from chevy - gm special coverage program #14423. There was a smell of fuel while refueling. On 12/16/15 the dealership notified me that the the fuel tank was indeed defective and that it needed to be replaced. They said that they would order the part and hold the vehicle until the part came in since the vehicle was not safe to drive. Later that day the dealership stated the part would not be available until the middle of Feb. 2016 and that I would have to leave the vehicle in their lot. That was extremely upsetting news since now I was not going to have my vehicle for several months without a replacement. I have been in touch with the dealership (angela sanacore (service advisor), don ring (parts manager), john consoli (service director), and steven cruz, (parts dept. Supervisor) as well as chevy customer service (case # 8-172-332-7456). Today is March 4, 2016 and the part is still not available. I have been with out my Trailblazer for almost 3 months. The dealership and chevy customer service still have "no idea" when the part will be available. They now tell me maybe may 2016. Can you help expedite this case for me? sincerely, joseph messina.
Noticed a strong gas odor coming from the vehicle. In November 2015 we received a letter from chevy telling us that "fuel tank inlet check valve" could fracture. We took it to a dealership & we were told it was the case with our Trailblazer. We have not been able to get the tank replaced. In December they supposedly ordered the part, it is now almost may & still no part. I have tried contacting chevy directly & no one is willing to help. They keep putting me off, saying they can't find the part etc. Then telling me it will be here following month. They are just giving me the run around, and also their famous thing is to say well, it's a 2002 so we don't have parts. This is covered under a warranty. I called chevy today & when the "senior advisor" told me the part would be there in may, I asked where he came up with that information he hung up on me. Before that he told me I might never get it repaired. In that case they would eventually send me a letter telling me what my next step might be. I cannot be the only person with this problem, and especially with it not being resolved properly.

Gm recall: gm special coverage program 14423: November 2015. I took my truck into vandergriff Chevrolet to check my fuel tank as I was experiencing the issues outlined in the recall letter. They concurred that I needed to replace the fuel tank. They let me have a rental for two weeks while the ordered the part. Once they found out that gm or affiliate no longer manufactures the part, they told me that gm would no longer pay for the rental. The advised me as they have no idea how long it would take to find a manufacturer to build a new fuel tank, that in order to avoid the gas fumes, it is safe to drive as long as I do not completely fill up the tank when I gas up. However, the check engine light still comes on of course, and that would prevent me from passing the state inspection which is due in two weeks. They offered no solution for me on that, and still no expectation as to when the fuel tank would be received . It has been 6 months now. I took my truck in originally in early December of 2015.

On November 19, 2015, I received a letter from Chevrolet, p. O. Box 909989, milwaukee, WI 53209-9989, dated November 2015, notifying me, "this letter is intended to make you aware that some 2004 model year Chevrolet Trailblazer vehicles may contain a fuel tank inlet check valve (icv) that could fracture. " I immediately called the 1-800-222-1020 phone number included in the letter and the gentlemen I spoke with called my nearest Chevrolet dealer, nimnicht Chevrolet, jacksonville, florida, and asked them to call me to set up an appointment to have the situation investigated. They did not call me and the following day, the representative from Chevrolet called back to confirm that I had an appointment with nimnicht and I informed him they had not called. He immediately called them back and got an appointment set up for me, which was not until the following Wednesday, November 26, at 8:00 a. M. I took my vehicle in, which has all of the symptoms listed, I. E. Gasoline smell, ses light on solid for a while, then begins blinking, and will go back to solid, terrible gas mileage and when sitting still with engine running, engine acts as if it wants to shut off. Within ten minutes of my arriving at the dealership, I was informed there was nothing they could do since my mileage was over 150,000. The date I received the letter, the mileage was 151,872 and by the time I got an appointment, it was 152,000 plus. After letting me sit in their waiting room, and my asking them to please call Chevrolet to see if some type of exception could be made, the lady came back and offered me a "real deal" of $903. 00 to repair it. She told me they were not allowed to call Chevrolet on a customer's behalf. My complaint is that, if the letter were mailed to me on November 1, the vehicle would have been less than 150,000 miles. I feel they should have to repair it. It is dangerous to drive.

The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that there was a constant strong odor of fuel in the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and the fuel tank was replaced. The failure recurred and the steering wheel vibrated. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, but the cause of the failure could not be diagnosed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure was not remedied. The failure mileage was 51,476.
Fuel tank inlet check valve fracture - chevy Trailblazer (2003) I received the attached notice for special coverage in November 2015 for my Trailblazer's fuel tank inlet check valve that fractures and allows for fuel to seep out of the tank. Sounds pretty dangerous to me. I took my vehicle to the local chevy dealership and sure enough, my vehicle was affected and the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The replacement fuel tank part was ordered by the dealership in November 2015 and the replacement part has still not come in, 6 months later. I've called the dealership, as well as gm/chevy corporate at least 20 times over the past 6 months and the update I received today from the dealership was the part 'may come in September 2016 or it may not'. I can't drive the vehicle during this time due to this dangerous gas leak repair. This is wildly unfair. I was patient, but this is ridiculous - a replacement part should not take a year to receive. I'm guessing the part will not arrive in September either, as I was told in January 2016 that the part would arrive in February 2016 and obviously that didn't happen (today is April 15, 2016). Finally, the service I received from gm/chevy corporate was appalling. Donna seymour - a senior advisor at gm/chevy (1-866-790-5600 ext. 5911534) provided the worst service I've ever had, anywhere. She repeated would say she would call me back and fail to do so, and do absolutely nothing to try to resolve the situation. She was awful and gm/chevy should be ashamed that they treat their customers in this manner.
Gm issued special coverage program 14423 to repair leaking gas tank and there are no pairs available. Letter was issued in Nov 2015, received Dec 2015, went to love Chevrolet dealership Jan 2016 parts not available until July 2016. This is unsafe and unacceptable.
Tl- the contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet trail blazer ext 370. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds the vehicle surged forward and the rpms fluctuated. The stated that the vehicle immits an abnormal odor from the fuel tank. That fuel warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the tank vacuum and tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000. Gl.
I own a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer ext and just like the thousands of others mine has a defective gas tank filler on the top of the tank. It's a known bad part feom the factory. Mine has had a hole for a while now. It can literally leak over 10 gallons of gas a day if you fill the tank to full. Even if you don't the smell of gas in and around the vehicle is terrible. My check engine light is on because of it. It runs like crap because of it. What's more dangerous than spilling gas everywhere you go!? some people have had chevy pay for the repairs on there 2004 Trailblazer. Look it shouldn't matter what your VIN# is or how many miles at this point (I just hit 150,000) the gas tanks on these vehicles are faulty, they're dangerous, they're exspensive. I surely dont have $800-$1500 laying around to fix a part that is known and proven to be bad. We all know tbey are bad, Chevrolet knows it, the NHTSA knows it. The kicker is you cant even find used gas tanks for these things to save money. Every single one is junk or already replaced one that was junk. It is completely crazy that the owners of these vehicles where never probably taken care of in regards to this issue with the gas tanks.
Received special coverage program 14423 that stated problems with the fuel tank inlet check valve could occur. I have fuel odors, fuel leaks, service engine soon and reduced engine power lights coming on while driving. Mileage is 180,000 miles and a fuel tank should not be a problem at any time, but gm will not provide any compensation.
I filled up my tank yesterday. One hour later, started the car and the fuel guage read zero, with low fuel indicator on. Now it's intermittent, never going above 3/4 full. I have printed out the NHTSA's investigations number dp 10-001and pe 11-014. I have heard that gm is willing to fix the problem for 1/2 price. What is 1/2 price? 1/2 of what? what do I need to do next?.
Fuel gauge sensor is defective, cannot determine how much fuel is in the tank, vehicle stalled and ran out of gas when the gauge showed gas in the tank.
I was driving 10 mph and suddenly the neddle of the gas went all the way down like I didn't have gas, and the car turn off itself. So I put the gear in park and started the car again so it work again but the needle took 15 minutes to go up all the way to full. And I know my tank was full because I pump was the night before. So I keep driving for 3 days and filled again my tank the night before and next day I turn on the car again the neddle went down a quarter. The mecanic sai was the fuel sensor pump gas. And I hear other people have the same problem. The repair cost me 730 dollars .

My fuel tank has a hole in it. I have filed a previous complaint with NHTSA and also with gm. An NHTSA worker helped me a lot and when I called gm and chevy back I was told several times someone would get back in touch with me. I have tried to get it fixed but no one is able to help. I have tried many places for used fuel tanks but everyone says that the envoys and Trailblazers that they have all have the same exact issue. I cannot get any help from gm or chevy.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer. While powering up the vehicle, the fuel gauge lights illuminated and a beeping noise activated indicating low fuel. The contact had just refueled and the tank was filled to capacity. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed that the fuel sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 67,000.
I have a 2003 chevy Trailblazer and it started to have the smell of gas and a dip from the fuel tank. I was wondering if this was a fix that would be covered by general motors. I have only owned this vehicle a year and live on a very limited income. I love this vehicle and do not want to have to part with it but I need a vehicle to go to doctors and hospitals for medical issues. Please help in getting this fixed.
The area around the fuel tank filler neck, where it connects to the fuel tank, is leaking. This is a common issue with 2002 - 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer ext's and GMC envoy xl's. It is covered under general motors special coverage program #14423 for 15 years or 150,000 miles. My Trailblazer now has 180,000 miles on it and I have been smelling gasoline fumes in the area of the filler neck for a long time, but I didn't know where it was coming from. I just found out about this program and checked the filler neck area and found the leak. Because the vehicle's mileage is outside the mileage limit of the program, gm will not cover the replacement of the fuel tank and filler assembly. I am stuck with a vehicle that may be hazardous to drive, but I have no choice.
The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer. Whenever fuel was placed in the vehicle, a very strong fuel odor was present outside the vehicle and the check engine light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the storage tank assembly failed and was leaking. The entire fuel tank needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.
There is a known problem with the gas tanks on these vehicles. The vapors cause the check engine light to illuminate. In nys this car will not pass the yearly inspection. Chevrolet has an extended coverage bulletin out but it only is for vehicles that have les than 150,000 miles on it or are not older than 15 years old. Whichever come first. Prior to this, their extended coverage was for 150,000 miles or 12 years. I was excluded from the first time due to age of the vehicle when I purchased it and am now excluded from the second extended coverage due to the mileage. It is absolutely ridiculous that this is not an official recall and that chevy has loopholed numerous owners out of the coverage by not increasing the mileage requirement. The national average to drive a car according to the NHTSA is between 15,000 and 16,000 per year. According to their mileage requires a person would have had to drive this car less that 10,000 per year. This is totally unrealistic. Since this safety issue involves fuel which is highly flammable I am baffled as to why the NHTSA is not forcing an official; recall on this vehicle or forcing chevy to take the mileage restriction/age off of the extended coverage.
My 2006 chevy Trailblazer fuel gauge indicator went out. When you fill up the tank the gas gauge remains at empty. Now I have no idea how much gas is in the tank. This is a public safety matter. I cannot and should not be expected to know how much gas I have in my car without a properly working gas gauge. If my car runs out of fuel and an accident occurs it would be totally avoidable. It is clear that there have been several hundred complaints regarding this issue and the ntsb opened an investigation into this matter but failed to act. I would be ok with paying to fix this issue if it was a rare occurrence but clearly there have been complaints and gm and ntsb are aware. Ntsb would be complicit if an accident occurs because they did nothing to protect the individuals on the road. If the ntsb cannot make gm recall the vehicles for this safety problem than I am not sure what the ntsb does and I would advocate not funding this entity. Please act on this matter and make gm recall and replace this faulty part before someone dies.
Gas has been spilling off the gas tank metal flange where the intake hose attaches too. Chevrolet dealer does not recognize this as a recall . Apparently a fatality needs to be directly link to this problem before this issue is address.
Nhtsa action number : pe07014 occurred on my vehicle around November 2014. The problem presented as p0442 cel and odor of gas after parking in garage. Gm has indicated because the special consideration allowance has expired, despite the low mileage they will do nothing. This vehicle was purchased new in August 2003. I do not understand why gm was not compelled to issue a safety recall due to the risk of gas leaking. I would appreciate assistance to get gm to minimally provide defective parts replacement, due to the know manufacturing defect in the gas tank.
Communicated to gm help center 10/30/2014: my 2003 chevy trail blazer has a strong odor of gas in the rear. The vehicle has only 63,000 miles and has been well maintained. I "googled" the problem and found it to be a known issue. In part: NHTSA #: pe07014 "in June 2007, gm will expand its special policy to address fuel tank inlet check valve (icv) fractures. " will you help me remedy this problem? short story, they reviewed my description of the problem and ultimately declined any remedy. I can understand that the extended warranty has pasted, but my issue is I never received any notification as noted in NHTSA # pe07014. Had I received that notification I would certainly have followed up on the problem. This vehicle was purchased new and has very low miles for being a 2003. In view of the lack of notification, I think the vehicle should be covered as outlined as part of pe07014. Had I received notification and ignored it, then it would my problem, but I never received the original notification.
On Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at approximately 11:30 a. M. While my husband and I were driving on the west side of the standing rock sioux reservation my 2006 Trailblazer ext caught on fire. We both smelled smoke, parked (didn't turn off the ignition) and flames began to shoot out from underneath the front driver's side of the vehicle. We got out and ran to the west side of the roadway as the fire engulfed the entire front motor area. My purse was still in the burning vehicle and I told my husband he ran back to the burning vehicle to retrieve it. He sustained burns to his hands, face, legs and feet. In addition he received smoke inhalation to a degree of a "black out" stage. We witnessed the tires burn up one after another, beginning with the front driver's side, then the passenger side, the rear driver's and the passenger's side - at this point we moved further away from the burning vehicle as we expected the car to explode once it reached the gas tank area, but somehow the gas tank didn't explode. In fact, the spare tire which sits underneath the gas tank received a slight singe and did not burn (along with the gas tank). The only warning we had was the "smell of smoke" - the Trailblazer's dash warning light did not appear to indicate anything was wrong. In addition, on or about October 25, 2014, another Trailblazer (same area) also burnt up (as reported by bureau of land management).
Lights go out/dim while driving. No additional electrical items in use-heater, ac, gps, radio, cigarette lighter. Does not appear to be affected or caused by speed, acceleration, deceleration. Fule tank will sometimes register empty while mostly full. Do not notice problem during daylight driving.

My vehicle is sending gas fumes in thru the vent system. I have read online that this has happened to several 2004 Trailblazers. The outcome is faulty fuel tank modular resouvour assembly or hole in tank. As of now there is no recall. I will be bringing the vehicle into my dealership soon to get the problem fixed however, I feel if this has happened to several other vehicles it should be part of a national recall. I searched online under chevy Trailblazer 2004 fuel smell thru vent. I hope that something will be addressed on this before someone gets killed either by fumes or possible explosion. The affected parts is not correct however I had to select something to get this to process.
Tl- the contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that the fuel tank had fractured. Due to the fractuered fuel tank the check engine warning indicator had illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnoised that the fuel tank had fractured and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle failure mileage was 113,479. Kh.
Tl- the contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer 360. The contact stated that there was a strong smell of fuel fumes on the ouside and inside the vehicle that was progressing over a period of time. The contact also indicated that there was a presence of a fuel leak failure as well. The vehicle was taken to the authorized dealer who diagnosed that the fuel tank modulator had an internal failure and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 82,000. Dyd.
I bought a used 2003 chevy Trailblazer 6cylinder 4w with those156000. Well shortly after buying it I had my windows rolled down in a drive thru and smelt gas. I didn't think much of it until a few weeks later I noticed that I had a leak of some sort and it had the gas smell but within another week my gas mileage per tank of fuel went down drastically and I noticed I had puddles under my vehicle instead of a few drips now. The smell of gas is overwhlming it gives me headaches when I drive. I'm afraid it's going to start a fire. It constantly drips gas now when I ddrive you can seexa trail leading to me. I wish I nevercwould have bought it. It's so unsafe for my children with glad leaking out.
Starting about a few weeks ago my 2004 chevy Trailblazer ext has reeked of unspent gasoline, and this smell consumes the entire interior and exterior of the vehicle. The vehicle also has small leak below reservoir which appears to be leaking unspent fuel. Chevy offered a "special coverage" to correct this issue (corrosion on top of fuel tank reservoir), however it only covers vehicles under 10 years of age and under 120k miles. My vehicle is under that mileage, however this repair will not be covered due to age of vehicle (mine was assembled in March). This issue is a major safety concern, as any small spark could cause this vehicle to ignite. I cannot continue to drive my vehicle, and feel this needs to be rectified before it causes catastrophic loss (either building or personal).
Fuel tank filler neck where the filler hose attaches to the tank, has come off the fuel tank. This allows gasoline to spill on the road when driving and allows fuel to spill on the ground when refueling the vehicle. This should be a safety recall. Checking the safecar. Gov/VIN lookup site this vehicle shows no open recalls. If there was an earlier recall related to this problem, the recall repair was not sufficient to keep the safety situation from reoccuring. A line of gasoline, on the road, leading straight to the fuel tank, has to be considered a safety issue that should be addressed by your department. Please let me know the progress of this necessary safety recall.
