The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that the vehicle had no specific failures other than failing an inspection. The contact called a dealer (lannan Chevrolet, 40 winn st, woburn, MA 01801, (781) 897-0508) to inspect and diagnose the failure. The manufacturer did not send a notification of any extended warranty campaigns; however, the vehicle was included in a water pump seal leak, power steering, transmission, and additional service campaigns. After the dealer's repairs, the vehicle was rode roughly and the engine indicator illuminated two days later. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer who indicated that further diagnostic testing was required. The vehicle had been at the dealer for longer than two weeks with no resolution. The manufacturer was notified and refused to provide a remedy for the several extended warranty campaigns, of which some were not completed, but the dealer specified on the invoice that the vehicle was serviced. The vehicle was not repaired and was unable to be driven. The approximate failure mileage was 113,000.

For the past month or so, I kept on hearing a humming noise from the engine. The steering seem to be very stiff. I took it to the dealer and they told me that it needs a new power steering rack and pump. The car just rolled 62,000 miles which is too early for those type of issues.

Steering goes out when slowing down to turn , chev. Dealer charged 1400. 00 to repair steering system , stating a pion gear and boots was worn and leaking , 105,000 miles , replaced pump as well as gear and new boots , see there is a problem with this make and model , need this issue addressed before someone is killed , came very close to a wreck myself , while turning off a busy highway ,consumers being charged to fix faulty gm products , not fair.
Took my car into dealership martin Chevrolet because check engine light came on. Since my car was new in 2009 my steering on my car has always been hard to turn. I asked them within a year of getting car but said nothing was wrong. Well the power steering water pump and steering gear assembly was leaking. Also my timing chain was defected. There was an extended warranty for the timing chain and pump but not the steering gear assembly. My car has less than 50,000 miles on it. Chevy knows that the steering has been defected but would not cover the gear assembly so it cost me $934. 19 to fix. Chevy should cover the cost for everything!!.
Tl-the contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph, the steering wheel emitted an unusual noise. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the power steering pump was replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 62,000. Js.

The vehicle experiences loss of power steering at low speeds. Chevrolet issued a special warranty for the power steering pump, however when taken to the dealer, the vehicle also had a cracked steering rack. A quick internet search showed that hundreds of other drivers are experiencing the same problem. Chevrolet is only offering to fix one component of a faulty steering system, leaving drivers to foot the bill for the other faulty parts.
I brought my 2010 chevy Traverse in to the dealer for repair work. I previously had received a service bulletin 14329a which was for a defective power steering pump. During the course of the service, the dealer let me know that due to the power steering pump being defective, the steering rack pump was also needing repair. Gm took care of the power steering pump but not the rack pump as the rack pump did not have a formal service bulletin out yet. It is disappointing to me that this would not be taken care of by gm as the power steering pump being defective caused the rack pump to also be. I would like to see a service bulletin come out on the steering rack pump as many, many others are in the same situation as myself.
My vehicle is just over 60,000 miles. It needs a new power steering pump (recalled) and now a new steering rack. The vehicle is very difficult to turn in parking lots and on the roads. I thought it just needed a power steering flush and so that was completed at 50,000 miles. That was after I had repaired a 700 engine coolant hose.
Complete failure of the power steering system in my 2011 Traverse due to a leak. Problem is definitely a safety issue and should be addressed by gm. They have addressed a problem with the pump but when other parts in the system fail due to leakage, I think that consumers have a right to be concerned. Based on the high level of complaints waged by owners, the problems with power steering systems in gm's Traverse, acadia, enclave and outlook family seems to be wide-spread. Gm should hold itself accountable for the inherent defects and, if not, perhaps the NHTSA can make some headway.
The steering wheel catches and I cant turn. I got the pump replaced and I am still having the same problem. Some people have had recall sent to them for this problem but I have not received anything.
While driving at low speed steering becomes difficult. It squealed often when turning corners and was very hard to turn. Took it to the dealer for repair and gm covered the water pump but needed a new steering rack which is unusual at 40k miles. Had to pay about $1400 out of pocket to cover the repair so I could safely drive the vehicle.
2010 chevy Traverse lt awd has developed a consistent whining noise while running. Chevy dealer investigated and says the steering rack needs to be replaced because it's leaking. Car makes unusual noise when turning and is sometimes hard to steer around corners. No mention of pump being involved. Cost estimate of $1500 to replace steering rack. Internet search revealed similar problems with many other 2010 Traverse vehicles. Still looking for additional info. Have not received any recall notice from gm and dealer says not covered. Repairs not done yet, investigating options.
2011 chevy Traverse 54000 miles- vehicle whining at low speeds, becoming difficult to turn and at times loss of power while driving. I received a letter from gm indicating a powersteering pump would be replaced on the vehicle only if I was experiencing problems, this was not a recall notification. I took the vehicle to the dealer to have the pump replaced. I was later contacted by the dealer to be informed that my power steering gear is leaking and I need a whole new powersteering rack at the cost of $1400. I have read several similar complaints, and if gm has identified a problem with the power steering pump, the entire power steering rack should be considered a recall.
Hard to steer at low speeds; thumping sound. On Nov 8, 2014 , I took the vehicle to burlington Chevrolet, however they stated it wasn't the power steering pump. They said it was the steering gear rack which will cost me about $1,600 plus tax (also includes flushing the line and wheel alignment). This is ridiculous. I've read similar common problems. This has to be related to the recent power steering pump issue letter that gm recently mailed (14329). I'm frustrated!.
A week ago my Traverse started making a grinding noise, and I thought it was the brakes so I took it to our mechanic who checked all four wheels and determined the brakes were fine. He said it was possibly a rock or something causing the noise and it stopped for a few days. This morning I was pulling into a parking spot at work and the steering froze up completely and the brakes did not want to work either. I almost hit the car I was parking next to! I'm so glad that didn't happen in the middle of traffic or a main street or it could have been a lot worse. Very scary, but what would cause this? will gm be looking into this before someone gets really hurt or has a major accident? taking back to the mechanic Wednesday to check the steering pump. . . . Not happy.
Tl-the contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated while driving approximately 20 mph, an abnormal sound emitted from the steering column and the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing and the power steering pump was replaced. The failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and it was determined that the power steering rack needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 44,000. Pam.
For the last several weeks the power steering has been going out intermittently while driving at slow speeds. It is dangerous and scary. We finally had to get the power steering pump replaced yesterday. This seems to have corrected the problem.
On 9-11-14 the power steering went out while driving. Took the vehicle to the dealership & I was told I needed a power steering solenoid. 10-23-14 power steering goes out again while driving so back to the dealership I go. This time I was told that gm has issued a bulletin on the problem and the power steering pump needed to be replaced. 11-10-14 power steering goes out again. Go back to the dealership and was told that the ecbtm needed to be replaced and it was not part of the bulletin? my issue is that I do not feel gm went deep enough to fix the problem. I know 3 people in my area that have had the same problem. When your driving in heavy traffic and your have no power steering it creates a dangerous situation for the vehicle occupants and opposing drivers. You would think gm would step up and fix the problem the first time. I have spoken to Chevrolet customer asst 2 times with zero response about fixing the problem. The last time being with tiffany. My case # is 71-151168370.
In September of last year our 2010 chevy Traverse started getting hard to turn left or right and I have researched the problem and I can not afford 1200. 00 dollars to fix the problem which seems like it is the power steering pump. At this point we have no power steering about 90 % of the time. It is getting dangerous at this point and I don't know what we will do this winter if we start to slide we would be unable to steer fast enough to keep from wrecking. We need this car. Other than the steering, I love this car.
2009 Chevrolet Traverse steering will lock up at low speeds especially in parking lots and turning in town. Took to dealership and said it would need a power steering pump at a cost of 1200. 00. Seems to be a very common occurrence and I think gm should pay for some of this repair. Not very impressed with how they are avoiding not to share in some of the cost of this costly repair.
While parking during the turn into the parking place, the power steering ceased to function. Happened again when pulling out or turning at low speed the power steering stops working. It will come back if stop or sometimes on acceleration. Had it checked by mechanic and they could not tell what it was and just did the blanket you should try to replace the whole rack and pump assembly.
Power steering pump went out steering wheel locks up at low rpm or in neutral ridiculous at this mileage car is supposed to be upper class with upper class mechanical failures??.
2010 Chevrolet Traverse. Consumer writes in regards to power steering pump malfunction. Also, the tire pressure monitoring system light illuminated. The dealer stated the tire pressure sensors needed to be replaced. However, the consumer decided to get a second opinion, and was informed there was nothing wrong with the sensors, the issue was the vehicle.
Power steering cut out at low speeds -- intermittent. Worked some days and other times it wouldn't had pump replaced.
Occasional hard steering/loss of power steering during low speeds when maneuvering. In 01/2011 gm replaced steering gearbox due to leaking seals as a warranty item. Now this issue has come up and their answer is to replace the gearbox again, and they expect me to pay for it now that the extended warranty has expired. Had an independent ase certified mechanic check this out and he said he¿s seen the same issue 3 times at his shop. They¿ve been replacing the power steering pump. Contacted gm corporate customer case and now is going thru district level review.
Since back in April 2014 I started to notice that at time the wheel would be hard to turn when parking. I contact the dealer and they said that power steering was a known problem with the Traverse. Just recently it got so bad that I can't turn the wheel safely. When making a right turn the wheel locked and I rolled into the curve. When pulling out of the parking lot I had to give it some gas to get the wheel to try to turn and almost hit a person. When to trying to back the car because the wheel is so tight I almost hit someone again. I contacted gm and they said they would offer me cost assistance to get it fix. The dealer said they put all my information in some calculation system and it came back as the only cost assistance I qualified for is 100% participation on my part. I have to cost assistant to help myself pay the bill. I don't want to be responsible for hitting a person or another car because my wheel is locking because the power steering gear is leaking and need to be replace and now the power steering pump is bad. And they keep telling me this is a known issue and everyone has to pay for gm error.
I purchased a 2009 chevy Traverse new in March of 2009. The vehicle has approx 125,000 miles on it & is out of warranty. Recently the vehicle began to lose power assist in steering at low speeds making it nearly impossible to make a turn. I have been close to striking other vehicles and objects as I have tried to turn. This is intermittent & I never know when it is going to happen. This is a very, very dangerous issue & needs to be dealt with as there are several owners of this or similar gm vehicles that have the same problem, as indicated by the many internet forums related to this matter. Please, please look into this before people are injured or killed. I took the vehicle to a local repair shop, they say it needs a steering gear & pump at a cost of $1,629. 58, however, after reading some posts from others who have had the repairs completed, it does not appear this fixes the problem.
Tl- the contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds the power steering would suddenly malfunction making the steering wheel very difficult to turn. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that the power steering pump was defective. The power steering pump was replaced and the steering gear toe was adjusted to remedy the defect. The manufacturer was notified and no solution was offered. The failure mileage was 93,186. Jft.
Notchy feel to steering at lower speeds. . . 1-40mph. Dealer states that car needs new power steering pump. Looking at the complaints already logged this is an obvious problem.
I purchased my 2011 Chevrolet Traverse awd in April 2014 and within the first week I noticed a slight shuddering in my steering as I would make a turn to either my right or left. It feels like when you have a warped rotor except that when this shuddering occurs I am not applying the brakes. Also, I have been noticing a whining noise as I am making turns in either direction. This is definitely coming from the power steering pump. I checked and added steering fluid and the next day this still continued. Vehicle is just out of warranty for the in-service date but not for the 30,000 mile bumper. I have a friend who also is experiencing the same issue with his Chevrolet Traverse and wish that gm would do a recall on this vehicle system before an accident occurs. From what I have read, there has been far too many complaints from other consumers concerning this same power steering issue.
My wife bought a new 2011 chevy Traverse which now has 78,572 miles on it. The power sterling just failed on it yesterday. I checked the fluid level and it was ok. The pump growls when turning and it is almost impossible to turn when the car is idling. I drove it to church this morning and almost hit a parked vehicle while trying to turn into a parking spot. My wife would not be able to turn the vehicle if she were driving. This is a real safety issue since the pump fails with no warning. I know this won't be covered under warranty, but is there a recall for this problem yet?.
Purchased car used 47011, a little over 2 wks "check engine"=fuel pump control module , next was seat assembly. & alternator. . . Whining. Engine noise reported, nothing done. . . No problems detected at time due to problem being "intermittent"! contacted gm exec office reported issues, got file number--no resolution! received special coverage letter from Chevrolet dated sept 2014 '#14329 @ power steering pump with extension of warranty coverage. Took vehicle to chev dealership for two recalls (14030 & 14187) and check power steering. . . Recalls handled, power steering pump replaced and installed new gear housing kit. One month later took back for state inspection, failed because now power steering rack leaking on both sides!!?! after reading several other similar accounts, I am convinced that the power steering pump and rack issues are contingent on the other. . . Also hefty amount for repair $1500-1900; which I am also very concerned may just be a temporary fix!! we desperately need help correcting this injustice in lieu of safety concerns and being duped while investing in american-made products. . . Please advise, research, and help us!! families and lives depend on it.
This is an update to my earlier complaint of intermittent sudden loss of power steering making turns at low speeds. I was able to reliably recreate the loss of power assist following this procedure: finding an empty lot, turn vehicle and hold at slow speed (under 10mph) and continue in complete circles. Eventually, power assist will kick off and making any turns will require significant effort. Bringing the vehicle to higher speeds (25-35 mph) appears to reset. My vehicle is currently in shop for replacement of power steering pump as this was the dealership service department's diagnosis even though I informed them of the ability to induce vehicle as described above. I will update this complaint if power steering replacement does not correct issue.
