11 Ball Joint problem of the 2002 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 01/19/2015

I purchased this vehicle last Dec,2014. . It is a used vehicle though, its in very good condition. I was backing out of my drive way approx. 2 weeks after I bought it & the right side passenger side the suspension, arm & ball joint just fell out. . The day prior to this I heard a definite knock from that wheel base. In fact when I was backing out of the drive, I was on my way to the mechanic. Well, being stranded, I had to call a tow service to haul it in for repair. . They said they could replace it,& the charge for the assembly would cost $112. 00 plus. . Having it replaced & repaired. It is now 10 months later & the knocking is back & my concern is that it will fall out when I'm driving causing an awful accident. This is wear I stand now w/ this issue that is recorded under your recall descriptions. Thank you. .

12 Ball Joint problem of the 2004 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 08/28/2014

I bought my 2004 Chrysler Sebring sedan in February of 2014. Two months later in April the ball studs on my tires were popping off while while I was driving and my car started wobbling. I took my car to the place where I got it from and they fixed it. Two months later in June the same thing happened on the same tire. The ball studs flew off while I was driving and the tire was hanging on by one ball stud the others were broken off. I had the car towed to the shop and it was fixed. Now in August my ball joint snapped as I was backing out a parking space, with no warning. The whole car fell to the ground. This car is a safety hazard and there is no reason why the ball studs and ball joint should break so easily. If I was on a residential street or even on the parkway I would've lost control and crashed.

14 Ball Joint problem of the 2001 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 01/17/2014

. My car started making this incredible squeaking sound every time I turned by steering wheel to the left or right. The squeaking started in mid-January of this year (2014) I have had my car checked by 2 professional mechanics and was told by both that my ball joints were defective and had to be replaced. The mechanics also advised that my car was dangerous to drive. I have done some research and found that there was a recall concerning ball joints issued on my make, model and year vehicle. The recall was issued on October 9, 2009 under recall #68353. At the time the recall was issued my car was not 10 years old. I contacted my local dealership and was told my vehicle (based on my VIN #) was not included in the recall. I then contacted Chrysler dealership customer assistance line and again was told that my VIN # was not included in the recall. When I asked why some VIN #'s were included and some were not, I was told that different ball joints were probably put on my car and that those ball joints were not included in the recall. I then asked why they put different type parts on the same make, model and year of car and could not get an answer. They could not tell me what type of ball joints were put on my car. Obviously, the defective ball joints are the ones that were put on my car. I also was told by customer assistance that my car was manfactured on August 11, 2000. After doing the math, it seems that my car should be covered under the recall that was issued on October 9, 2009. I do not understand why some cars are covered under the recall and some are not. Please consider having my VIN # added to the recall that was issued October 9, 2009. I am certain my vehicle should fall under those guidelines. I have no other recourse. Thank you for your time and consideration. Karen.

15 Ball Joint problem of the 2002 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 11/27/2013

My wife was pulling out of parking lot of store, right front ball joint socket disconnected causing damage to front end of car. Though this seems to be an issue for this make/model of car, my VIN was never recalled.

16 Ball Joint problem of the 2002 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 07/15/2013

On the way home from work the left front ball joint socket separated. I was going 50 mph. On a straight road, no pot holes or bumps. There was a loud bang, front end dropped down, left front tire flipped sideways and there I was stuck on the side of the road. I have 35 years in the collision industry and do not understand how this happens, other than a poor part from the start. These parts should never separate. I checked for recalls and there are none on my car. But I would think there should be. I have insurance that will pay for repairs other than the ball joint. Going to have the other side replaced also. This happened at 5pm on a busy road, there was lots of traffic. I was pleased that nobody creamed me while I tried to gain control of car and man handle it off the road. I see many of the same complaints on here. This could have been a lot worse.

17 Ball Joint problem of the 2000 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 11/16/2012

There a recall on 10-13-2009 for bad ball joints. I bought the car in 12-2010 never got a recall notice on ball joints. On Nov-16-2012-we were driving with my 9 yr old and 10 year old with no warning the ball joint broke on driver side wheel . Will Chrysler still have honor this recall to fix my car being the recall was 3 yrs ago if I knew there was a recall I would of had this fix.

Failure Date: 11/16/2012

There was a recall that began on January 28, 2011 for bad ball joints. I bought the car in Dec 2010 in between recalls 2009 -2011. Never got a recall notice for this. On November 16 th 2012 my ball joint broke my car went out of control almost hit two phone poles had my family in the car. Likely we were not hurt or killed. 19 Ball Joint problem of the 1998 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

I went to have the transmission looked at as it's under warranty. I bought this car with 75,000 miles on it 3 years ago. Shortly after that the transmission went out. When the mechanic put one in he found out that there was already a used one in there. Two months later that tranmission went out and it got replaced. Well this brings us to present day where I'm getting it checked out and have them check everything out. They tell me that the rear ball joints are out and it'll cost $1200 to fix it. I'm like that's not worth it. I then find out that this is recalled.

20 Ball Joint problem of the 1998 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 03/16/2012

I made a complete stop and turned onto another road and heard a loud metal on cement noise pulled over to side of road as good as possible and got out of car and seen ball joint cracked and tire off car. My car was completely on ground in front right of vehicle. Had no reason to believe the ball joints needed to be fixed. Car drove smooth otherwise. If I would have known it would have been fixed but to just snap. Thank goodness I wasn't going faster or nothing was in my way and didn't crash! it was the scariest car "accident" I ever had. Never in my life have I had something like that happen to me in a car that had no signs of needing to be fixed.

21 Ball Joint problem of the 1999 Chrysler Sebring

We fell to the ground very hard stuck in the middle of the road the whole arm that holds my tire on or the front end ball joints came off as well . Their was no warning signs the tire and all of its parts came apart some how .

22 Ball Joint problem of the 1996 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 11/01/2010

1996 Chrysler Sebring coupe. Consumer writes regarding Chrysler employee lunch break activities the consumer stated he experienced mechanical failure while driving 20 mph. The left front ball joint suddenly separated and jammed the tire up into the fender well at an awkward angle. The consumer stated it cost over $800 to replace the suspension parts on both sides. The consumer stated the reason for the failure, was due to lack of lubrication, because years ago, manufacturers chose to delete the inexpensive grease fitting on suspension parts and instead chose substituted sealed ball joints that were subject to failure. Updated 04/26/11.

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) NHTSA campaign id number 00v421002 make Chrysler / model Sebring / year 1998 [xxx] recall number 967 front ball joint fell apart and almost killed both of us . We were never notified by Chrysler there was a recall on this vehicle or we would have had it looked at immediately .

25 Ball Joint problem of the 1999 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 12/17/2009

Front passenger side ball joint failure. While turning right into a shopping plaza the passenger side front ball joint failed on my wife's 1999 Chrysler Sebring convertible limited. This car at the time had less than 61,000 miles on it. The car was purchased as a used car the day before. The car was safety checked by the dealers mechanic before the sale with no issues noted that were not repaired. I understand through a search of the NHTSA database that there are other reports of ball joint failures and a safety recall on the coupe model of the Sebring for this failure. I would say given the mileage on this used car that a similar recall is warranted since this car exhibits the same type of failure with little warning of a problem existing. This is a safety issue that needs to be rectified by the manufacture due to a clearly faulty design. Fortunately in this case no one was injured nor was damage done to anything other than the car.

26 Ball Joint problem of the 1998 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 04/18/2009

1998 Sebring conv. Left ball joint came apart causing front end damage. Chrysler denies problems with this model . I had to pay for repairs myself and still drive the car with the front end damage.

27 Ball Joint problem of the 2004 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 11/16/2008

I was turning right after a stop, and my front right ball joint failed, causing the car suspension to fall onto the wheel rim, and I lost my steering. I backed up to get out of the way of cross-traffic, and inadvertently pulled the right boot out of the transmission, and the front passenger corner of the car fell all the way to the ground. Car was towed, inspected, and found tat the left ball joint was also loose, so I replaced both sides, as well as a new right drive axle and boot. The mechanic said that this model has greaseless bearings in the ball joints, which is a problem he has seen before. Total repair bill was over $770. I feel lucky, in that in another 5 miles I would have been on an interstate highway.
