There was a creaking sound underneath the front passenger side seat when all of a sudden the front of the car dropped down and I had difficulty controlling the car. The right front ball joint had broken. Prior to this event I had been driving 55mph with 2 children in the car. Thankfully, I had dropped the children off and was traveling at 25 mph when the failure occurred.

On my 2001 Chrysler Sebring one of the ball joints on the passenger side front wheel separated in a parking lot, causing the wheel to become detached. The mechanic determined it was rusted out which was surprising since the car only had 37k miles. The vehicle was in michigan and ohio for 5 years and California for 2 years. The mechanic was surprised and he said it normally takes over 100k miles for this type of problem. There were no injuries and the car was repaired (with replacement of all ball joints and the control arms) and I have the parts.
Turning into a parking space the driver side wheel feel off with out any warning! I had to get it towed. The tow truck driver and the mechanic both said I was a very lucky person that it did not happen on the interstate I had just gotten off of. The upper ball joint on the control arm popped out. When this happened the axil pulled out and the break cable was damaged. The estimate I have to fix the ball joint, axil, and break line is $900.
June 30 2005 the left front ball joint broke while driving. The consumer was driving 35 mph. There was a noise, sparks were flying, and the consumer lost steering control and bounced off a curve. There were no warning lights on the vehicle. The vehicle was recently inspected in may and no problems were reported. There was a recall, but the consumer was not aware of it. The consumer noticed there was a corrosion problem with the ball joint. The consumer didn't have the recall number. The vehicle is now having repair work done. Chrysler is willing to pay the repairs. The bearings had to be replaced, the left front wheel bearing was replaced twice.

Due to problems with ball joint and vibrations when trying to stop vehicle I ran into the back of a truck and pushed that truck into the back of a mercedes. The impact was significant and resulted in a hole in the front of my 98 Chrysler Sebring lxi. Luckily, no one was hurt. The driver of the mercedes was anxious to leave the scene and since there was no damage to the truck I hit, everyone agreed not to stick around for the police. The air bag did not deploy. About a year and a half ago my son, who was 18 years old at the time, was driving and when he failed to stop at a stop sign he ran into the side of someone else's car. This incident was reported to the police and there was a couple thousand dollars worth of damage to my car, not counting the damage to the other vehicle. The air bag did not deploy. My son bumped his head, but thankfully, was not seriously hurt.
In Feb. 2006 the front wheel feel off my 2002 Chrysler Sebring because of a ball joint failure (non greaseable joint). Luckily no one was killed or injured, but they could have been! I had the front joints replaced and other damage repaired. Two months later (April 2006) the ball joints in the rear of the car failed and the rear wheel fell off. Again no one was killed or injured, but they could have been!.
