1 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 03/06/2007

Truck fuel leak. 2000 Dodge Dakota quad cab purchased new December 1999; mileage 66,000 + ; extensive preventative maintenance performed on vehicle, also garaged when not in use; truck is not 4wd and is only driven over paved roads. . Started smelling fuel in garage, then could smell fuel when truck parked in open, finally could smell fuel when stopped at traffic light with windows closed and air / fan not on recirculate. Went to dealer, found fuel dripping from vehicle tank. Dealer says it is a molded fuel line from the tank, and it is being replaced now. This is the second fuel leak in this vehicle!! just over 2 years ago, the truck intermittently quit while driving, and it took 4 visits to 3 dealers to get the fuel pump / filter diagnosed as the problem. That repair left a fuel leak which required 2 subsequent trips to dealer [ and one other repair facility] to get repaired. Driver / owner is 60+, with extensive driving experience, having owned 3 trucks, and at least 10 over vehicles manufactured in the us, japan, and germany, and is a pilot by training. Driver / owner has never experienced a fuel leak in a previous vehicle; he also thinks that his expectations are not outrageous , and that this is a safety issue.

2 Fuel Pump problem of the 1994 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 01/01/2007

Front left door snapped off. I can't open the drivers door from the inside. Also, both seat belts snapped, the air and heat doesn't work, the brakes locked up, which affected the steering. The transmission was replaced three timed, the vehicle would loose power and the engine would die. The catalytic converter rattled. There was a rough idle and then the vehicle would stall. The cruise control was inoperative, the tires wore out prematurely. Also, I had difficulty getting the vehicle out of park. The idler arm is in the process of breaking, the ignition broke after the keys became stuck, the fuel pump failed and the bearing and bushing needs to be replaced.

3 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 08/07/2006

At 65 mph using cruise control, daytime, dry pavement, good weather, brake warning light and abs warning light illuminated with warning chime. At next exit, operator took vehicle to repair shop. Technician found right front wheel bearing assembly worn, allowing tire/wheel assembly to be moved 1-2'' from vertical. Vehicle had been checked during state inspection less than 400 miles previously and passed. A total failure in traffic at speed might have resulted in a loss of handling/braking that might have caused or worsened an accident. Failed part is available. Vehicle has also suffered numerous premature failures including: failure of driver heated seat, failure of electric fuel pump, nearly causing accident due to engine stoppage and loss of power steering, failure of instrument cluster, failure of front suspension components, and damage to spare tire due to mis-routed tail pipe. Some of these are manufacturer design defects, others are troubleshooting or repair errors at dealer. Two events (fuel pump, wheel bearing) might have caused accident with injury/death possible outcome.

4 Fuel Pump problem of the 1998 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 06/20/2006

Around 60,000 miles I was left stranded after the fuel pump failed. The repair cost over 700 dollars plus the cost of the tow. At 90,000 mile the fuel pump failed again. This time the truck quit in the middle of a major intersection up traffic and putting my life at risk. This time the repair cost 777. 00 dollars plus the cost of the tow. I don't feel that a fuel pump should fail so often. Especially a such great cost for repair.

5 Fuel Pump problem of the 2003 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 12/10/2005

I was driving along when my truck lost power for no apparent reason, it just stalled out. I did get to the side of the highway and turn it off, then started it up again. I continued down the road when it did it again. I was 80 miles from home and 30 miles from the nearest town in a truck that only had 40k miles of it and it left me stranded in the middle of nowhere because of a faulty fuel pump. This must be a problem since there was a recall on replaced fuel pumps in this year of vehicle. A vehicle between 03' and 06 should only have about 12k to 36k so why are the parts not staying together? it was a fuel pump, in the gas tank which you don't have access to unless its at home or in a shop, why are they building vehicles with faulty parts that you can't even change. I had to pay $763. 00 to get it fixed, and it had to be towed 125 miles from where I lived, so I was with out a vehicle and then had to get a ride over to get it a week later.

6 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 04/05/2004

At approx. 8k miles, pulsing and shimmy started in front end. Had to resurface rotors. Had to do again later at about 35k. Not normal. At 15k reported front end creaks/groans dealer found no problem. At 35k more of the same, dealer replaced front stabilizer/sway bushing. At 38k miles, replaced lower steering column. Helped some but still creaking when steering at low speed. At 53k asked again about steering groan. Dealer says he could fix for about $1000 (of course out of warranty now! and I've been asking about this since 15k miles). Also at 53k, replaced lower ball joints left side and fuel pump. At 59k back in the shop today to replace right ball joints which cause vehicle steering to "wander" and have badly worn inside right tire. Quality of vehicle is lousy and they won't admit it or stand behind it. The rotor and front end problems could be very dangerous because they impair the drivers control of the vehicle.

7 Fuel Pump problem of the 2004 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 03/17/2004

Loud thunking noise comes from the transmission when attempting to stop. Rep from Chrysler stated this was coming from the gas tank . There is a vibration between 30-45 mph coming from the drive train. Rep stated this was "normal". There is also a loud whirring noise coming from the fuel pump. Rep also states this is normal. Bearing nosie is coming from the power steering pump. My 2004 Dodge Dakota sxt has been to the dealer 5 times and the dealer still cannot fix. The rep from Chrysler stated this is the "best" truck Dodge has ever built. I'd hate to see the worst! so far the dealer has replaced the ac condenser, complete rack & pinion steering system, complete drive shaft, rear differential housing, rear swaybar links, the brakes shudder when attempting to stop , left front brake squeal, front end needed aligning after rack & pinion steering replacement . Transmission fluid leaking from tail shaft seal.

9 Fuel Pump problem of the 1999 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 01/13/2002

I owned a 1999 Dodge Dakota club cab since 09-99. It was bought new. . Before my warranty expired on sept-2000, there was a popping noise from my front end, which was attributed to the ball joints. Not only that, but every time I filled it up, gas would start pouring out from the tank. I took it to the the dealership maroone Dodge in pembroke pines, FL), and was told that it was probably because I put too much gas in it. After the warranty expired, the problem got worst, and I was told that I needed to replace the fuel pump gasket, and the ball joints. I asked why I haven't been told that before my warranty expired, but the service advisor that attended me wasn't working there anymore. I complained to Chrysler, trying to service my truck since I had complained from before the warranty had expired, but they never got back to me. I was just in this chat room, and saw that plenty of people have had the same problem with the ball joints, I don't know about the fuel leaking all over from the tank.
