Dodge Dakota owners have reported 17 problems related to tank assembly (under the gasoline fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
When filling the truck with gasoline, fuel immediately starts spitting out of the fuel filler neck. Unless the fuel is pumped extremely slowly, it sprays onto hands, clothes and the ground. It does this repeatedly and at any level of fuel in the tank. It can take nearly 15 minutes to fill the tank instead of an average time of 5 minutes. Even with attempting to fill slowly, occasionally fuel kicks back at the person filling the tank. Very dangerous!.

When filling the gas tank, at the shutoff stage, it will shoot gasoline out of the neck which runs down the side of the vehicle onto the ground leaving a frisbee size puddle. This happens every time the tank is filled to the top. The only solution now is to try to time the fill up and stop it before its completely full.

When braking for a stop, with the gas tank between half and full, there is a loud "thumping" noise a few seconds after begin stopped. The original gas tank has been replaced but the noise still exists. Per the dealer, 2005 and later models this problem has been corrected. Why can this not be corrected on the 2004 models?
the consumer stated it is to his understanding that this is an ongoing problem with the gas tank on 2004 Dodge Dakota's. The consumer is questioning why the later models were corrected and not the model he possess which has the same defect? the dealer stated knocking noise on floor the vehicle was placed on a lift and the axle nuts were re-torqued. Water leaked over the accelerator pedal, and the hole was sealed. The dealer stated clicking noise came from the rear when coming to a stop. Updated 09/05/07

Nhtsa recalls campaign 00v199000 and 00v193000; daimler issued two recalls on the fuel tank and the brake hoses. This vehicle was not included in the recalls due to VIN, but it leaked fuel and had trouble braking.
I have had my Dodge ram quad cab in for service over 15 times for rust, wiring, two recalls, engine lights, bad gas cap, bad steering wheel, and list continues. . . .

There was a strong gas smell in cab with all windows closed. I closed the vent, but it was still very strong and getting worse. No fuel leaks found. This has occurred 5 times. Seems to be intermittent and not directly connected with re/fueling, or fuel tank level. I was told it was possibly the orvr. Sounds like a good combination for a explosion.

Plastic tank has no skid plate and because it's near the exhaust pipe, if the tank was punctured, it could cause and explosion. Vehicle has not been affected with the concern. Dealer was notified.
Whenever vehicle stops consumer hears a loud clunking noise. Dealer said it was fuel in the tank. Currently, dealer claimes it is fuel which is norlmal. The clunking noise is loud and causes vibration of the vehcile. The consumer was concerned about safety and the impact of vibration on the vehicle. The rear seat back was loose on bottom.
The fuel tank gauge does not accurately read level of gasoline and fluctuates continually.

From the start of taking delivery of the vehicle, when stopping vehicle, from any speed, right after it stops, about 1/2 second, a loud thud can be heard and felt. This only occurs when vehicle is between half full and full. The dealer and manufacture agreed it was from the fuel tank. Manufacture claims it is a design flaw and suggests to only fill tank half full. Manufacture claims due to lack of baffle in tank, upon stopping. Gas sloshes around causing internal internal parts to hit inside of tank. They have no plans on changing the design or coming up with a repair. They say this is normal. They did replace the tank only and the condition is still present. I asked for something in writing from the dealer and manufacture as to the safety implications. They both refused to put any thing about safety in writing. The only thing they did, is say it is normal. I am a federal employee, part of my job is to conduct safety inspections for osha compliance and accident investagations. I am also part ot tht national aircraft crash response team, and an engineer. Enough said? isn't the violent movement of gasoline in the presents of oxygen and metal components a good possibility of an explosion or just the wear factor of constant contact against the tank every time you stop a potential for a leak ? I explained to both of them the potential and the only response was laughter. I also informed them of my employer and back ground. I also told them I would contact the NHTSA, only more laughter. Help please.
Sure wish that the manufacturer would notify the owners of such vehicles when there is a service bulletin out so we can make the decision as to if it applies to our vehicle or not. . . The aircraft manufacturers do it that way. . . I know. . I work for the boeing aircraft company.

The first problem happened in arizona on I-40,I had just passed an 18 wheeler and pulled back in his lane when I ran out of fuel, my fuel gauge indicated I had a quater of a tank left. I notified the dealer on my return home. I just had a second fuel failure at home. Again the fuel gauge shows a quater of a tank of fuel . I haven't been to the dealer to report this failure.
The vehicle keeps running out of gas even when the tank says it is fuel and stalls in traffic. Please desribe.
