1 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1999 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 02/01/2008

Abs controller module on vehicle is faulty. This causes random failure of abs system resulting in unsafe braking conditions. It also causes back brakes to lock up and not release causing unstable driving conditions. Dealer indicated that design is faulty and that Dodge does not make parts, but can replace the whole unit with a new design for $2,000. 00. If the design is faulty then it should be a recall in my opinion.

2 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2006 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 02/19/2007

My 2006 Dodge Durango may not stop correctly at one specific intersection. The Durango travels to the intersection to take kids to school or pick up from school. The route is traveled almost daily since January 3, 2007. On five occasions, the brakes did not function correctly. The road conditions are dry. The speed leading up to the intersection is 35 mph or less. The force pressed on the brakes is moderate for a simple, controlled stop at an intersection. Instead of stopping normally, we hear the noise of a small motor. The brakes don't feel right and the car doesn't stop quickly. Then, the brakes appear to fail and the car proceeds forward with no brake resistance. The reaction of the driver is to release the brakes and then press very hard. The car does stop with a jerk. After 3800 miles, the behavior only happens at the one intersection. The last three occurrences happened on the same day. We cannot duplicate the problem on demand at the intersection or on any other road. With dry road conditions, the car stops just fine with moderate or even heavy brake pressure. On an asphalt road with loose gravel, I applied heavy pressure to the brakes. I heard a motor; the brakes felt weird; the brakes never gave up; the car stopped quickly as expected. Something is wrong with my car. We, the drivers, are too afraid to see what happens if we don't release the brakes. In each occurrence, failure of the brakes would have resulted in an accident. The first, unexpected occurrence almost did. The dealership will not attempt any action on my car since they cannot duplicate the problem at the intersection or anywhere else.

5 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2002 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 04/10/2005

Occasionally under normal or slightly heavy breaking the anti-lock break system will kick in with a noticeably long pause between breaking and rolling. This causes our Durango to take longer to stop than normal. I have had a couple instances where I stopped too close to the car in front of me or too close to the cross walk because the vehicle's breaking system failed. My wife rear ended another vehicle when the Durango would not stop soon enough because of this problem.

6 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 2000 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 03/01/2005

I have a 2000 Dodge Durango r/t with factory 17" wheels. It was purchased from rusnak Dodge in pasadena, California with those wheels on it. After several years of poor braking experience, with the abs system activating prematurely, and several times at the dealership without a fix, a mechanic accidentally discovered the problem. There is no available selection in the software of the on board computer to allow for 17" wheels. All of the selections are for the 15" wheels that come on the standard model. The dealership was able to correct the problem by measuring the circumferance of my tires, calculating how many times they rotate in a mile, and creating a setting for the 17" wheels. The vehicle stops far better now. I am concerned about other drivers who would have no way to know this, because I am a 27 year veteran fire department captain and paramedic, and respond to traffic collisions quite regularly.

When the consumer attempted to apply the brakes, the anti-lock-brake system engaged, which almost resulted in a rear-end collision. The dealer replaced the anti-lock brake system unit, however the problem recurred.

10 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1998 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 02/15/2003

Abs indicator light comes on intermittently, brakes work as they should. Dealer replaced the sensor. One week later, abs light illuminated again. Dealer stated brakes were working, but they could not find the source of the problem. The solenoid was replaced. The following day abs indicator came on four times. Dealer suggested replacing the computer.

11 Brake Antilock Control Unit/module problem of the 1998 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 09/19/2002

I special ordered two 1998 Durangos that were built within 3 months of each other. Both units were ordered with the optional 4 wheel abs system. One vehicle the abs sensors failed, and then within 90 days the abs module failed casuing erratic driving behavior. The module was replace at 93k miles. The unit has 150k on it currently with no more abs problems. The second Durango with 63k miles just experienced the same problem. Abs failure that caused the unit to sway and drive irratically especially on turns and when braking. A 5 star rated Dodge dealer in the DC area replaced the abs module and actuator (sp) to correct the problem. In both instances the cars were very unstable to drive. Abs module repair to unit one was @$650, the other Durango abs repairs were $1450. Contacted daimler-Chrysler to see if there were any tsbs on this problem they said sorry, and they were not responsible for saftey related repairs beyond the oringinal warranty period, and unwilling to investigate the problem. I find it very alarming that 2 trucks built with in months of each other, with identical mechanical specs experience the same saftey related problem. I also own a 2001 Durango, and a 2002 Dodge ram 1500 and both of these units were ordered with the upgrade 4-wheel abs brakes. My concern, is there a design flaw in this system that could cause harm to my family in these new model trucks, or is this a covered up problem on the 1998 models. Both 1998's had different drivers, my father (82)and my oldest son (34 yrs) have been primary drivers on the 63k mile Durango, and my self and spouse (50) the primary on the other unit. Both units have full service histories at 5 starr rated Dodge dealers. . . Please advise. . . Remeber you guys said the abs was the safest way to protect my family from harm. . . . . .
