There is a distinct thud or low pitched banging sound when driving over a transition curb from a city street into a service type driveway or vice versa, driving over man hole covers, driving over insignificant roadway pot holes, hitting sharper bumps in the roadway. Most times there will be a side to side motion, but always a bang or thud at the left rear shock assembly at speeds between 25 to 40 mph. This concern has been previously addressed from the nhsta to Chrysler dating back to 2011 and Chrysler has issued 4 TSB's that continue to be ineffective. Chrysler continues to ignore the safety relevance, regarding the vehicles rear suspension.

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Durango. While driving various speeds and making a right turn, the vehicle pulled to the right and a cracking sound was heard from the front suspension. The contact indicated that the cracking noise was caused by faulty ball joints. In addition, the brake lights would not illuminate and the light bulb and socket was replaced on several different occasions. Also, the plenum gasket leaked oil from the engine, which caused the engine to lose power. The cause of the failures was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 134,000.

My Durango started making noise in the back end, and seemed unstable at times handling, and even worse when towing. The noise was most pronounced going slow over bumpy roads, like a clunking noise. Upon researching I discovered that these vehicles are known for having problems with the rear self-leveling shocks. These shocks are not a cheap fix, but knowing I had no other choice but to replace them with the same problematic shocks, I replaced them. The Durango was silent for a couple days, then a noise again appeared in the back end of the vehicle. Issues with the rear shocks are described in Chrysler TSB 17-005-13 as well as TSB 17-002-14, but since mine is a 2012 Durango and not called out for the TSB 17-002-14. The shocks that were installed are the new series ah shocks (from aa that was on the vehicle) the ah series purchased came with mounts preinstalled. The vehicle has a tremendous amount of noise in the back end, and clunking going on that is definitely shock related, it may be a different noise then before, but now it is even worse with the new shocks. Since replacing the shocks it is difficult to explain when the noises/clunking will happen ¿ it use to happen consistently when going slow over a bumpy road, no that is not the case ¿ sometimes it happens when going slow, sometimes faster, sometimes just around a corner, there seems to be nothing common about when the shocks are going to start making noise just that they will, and they will make noise often. It just seems that something is wrong, and not safe in the rear suspension.

Chrysler has published a technical service bulletin (TSB) number 17-007-14. I experienced the symptom of this TSB as a clunking sound from the rear of the vehicle. It is caused by the self leveling suspension (sls) shock strut upper mount failing. The sls is a component of the optional tow package. Before I understood what the issue was, I towed a 23' 4,500 lbs trailer over 1,200 miles. I equipped my Durango with a weight distribution and anti-sway hitch assembly rated at 8,000 lbs and ensured both the tow vehicle and trailer were near perfectly level. Additionally I was required by the state of maryland to have the trailer safety inspected which confirmed the axles were properly aligned, wheel bearings were serviceable, and the electronic brake controller was functional and adjusted properly. Despite the fact the trailer was well within the tow vehicle operating limits, the tow vehicle and trailer exhibited unsafe levels of dynamic instability. This dynamic instability manifested as a one-to-one lateral oscillation of the tow vehicle, lateral sway instability of the trailer, and what I would characterize as a dangerous reduced controllability of the tow vehicle and trailer. I ask that the NHTSA examine this issue and that this TSB be elevated to a manufacturer funded recall on all affected vehicles. Vehicle owners may not recognize the significance of the issue or understand the effects on towing stability. This not only puts the tow vehicle at risk, but all other vehicles sharing the road. Additionally, the high cost of mitigating this issue (greater than $1,000) will very likely cause a large number of vehicle owners to delay the repair or even decide not to have it addressed at all. Chrysler and Dodge have an intrinsic responsibility to address this issue with a recall for the safety of their customers as well as all drivers who share the road.
The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Durango. While driving at various speeds, the contact noticed an abnormal clicking noise from beneath the vehicle. The svc, 4wd, and 4lo warning lights illuminated. The engine revved independently. When the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle failed to accelerate. When making a turn, the steering wheel seized and required excessive force. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced the tie rod and front end suspension, but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 183,000.

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Durango. While driving at approximately 40 mph, the vehicle shook. When the steering wheel was turned in either direction, there was an abnormal grinding noise coming from the front wheels. The failure recurred continuously. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the front ball joints failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 04v596000 (suspension). The approximate failure mileage was 195,000.
I purchased my 2008 Durango from herb chambers Feb 4, 2013 since then it has been in the shop for several suspension noises (at least 3 times) in oct 2013 I brought my vehicle back in complaining that the suspension is noisy over all types of bumps. The technician checked it out and I was told that the stabilizer links needed to be replace and that they had to be ordered, that is when the waiting game started. I am still waiting on the links and my vehicle is getting worse to the point that when taking turns, going over bumps (big or small) there is tons of popping, cracking and excessive rattling happening. My tires are wearing and I am getting scared because I have also experienced issues when breaking with wheel lock up!! I have children that I am forever driving around to different sports games and dance competitions. I am really worried. I have a case with the customer assistance center for Chrysler but I just keep getting e mails telling me that there is still no known date as to when these backordered parts will be in and how sorry we are that they are not here as of yet, but that we will let you know as soon as they are in. I am having issues while driving and I want this fixed it is unfair that I purchase a vehicle and have had issues with it from the start and now this with no end in sight. They should be providing alternate transportation for those of us that are having this problem because it is a real safety issue and it is causing other issues with worn tires, alignment, and braking problems with the possibility of a roll over. The roads in massachusetts are at their worst ever which make driving really bad to begin with so having a suspension problem with no fix in sight really stinks. Not feeling safe!!.

The vehicle is making a very noticeable "clunking noise" during turns and over bumps. The vehicle often falls out of alignment and driving feels unsteady as on of the front wheels is loose. Upon inspection it appears this is being caused by premature wear to the upper ball joints. This has also caused excess wear on the vehicle suspension. As of yet no accident or injury has taken place due to this problem; however, it is a very serious safety concern and needs to be addresses promptly.

The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Durango. The contact heard a clunking noise in the front suspension while driving 5 mph. She called the dealer in reference to NHTSA campaign id number 04v596000 (suspension:front:control arm:upper ball joint). The technician stated that because her vehicle was 2 wheel drive, her VIN was excluded from the recall. The contact would be responsible for the recall repair. She is in the process of having the vehicle repaired. The manufacturer was unable to assist. The failure and current mileages were 120,882.
Problem with "front suspension/ball joints"
2004 Dodge Durango: had excessive freeplay in lower ball joints. Left more than the right. Ball joints were replace with Chrysler/Dodge parts on 9/28/07 at 60,577 miles. The repair costs $544. 69. At 65,202 miles I stated experiencing the exact same problems again. Vibration that can be felt in the steering and floorboard under the drivers feet. A metal on metal clunking sound starts after the vehicle is driven for a 1/2-hour (when hot) and is only heard while the vehicle is moving. Had two shops look at it but they couldn't hear the noise. Now at 65,738 miles, the noise is getting loud and I'm very concerned about the safety. Will the tire come off or will the ability to steer be go out completely at some point?.

After noticing strange noises from the front suspension of the 2002 Durango, I took it to the delaership. Thye could not identify any problems. Over the next few months the noises have become more pronounced, and now seem to coem from every tire/ corner of the vehilce. Took the truck in a second time- nothing could be found, dealer said they test drove the vehicle down the very same road that I hear the noises- like a loose mechanical connecoion, and a few squeaks, and rattles. Will tak car in for third time 7/30/04- I hope they can fix the problem on this $35000 truck.

My 1998 Dodge Durango's front suspension requires rebuilding at 72,000 miles. The ball joints are all worn, as is the upper control arm bushing. Vehicle wanders, especially on uneven surfaces. Metallic noises emanate from the front suspension, especially at low speeds. Local Chrysler dealer says there will be a recall sometime in the future. Meanwhile I do not consider the vehicle safe!.
Regarding pe 03032 front suspension on Dodge Durango. I have the same issue. The dealer told me after only 30000 miles on my 1998 Dodge Durango that my front suspension is worn and needs to be replaced. This has not been done yet. I'm desperately waiting on a recall and the outcome of your investigation. The car is making noise and is getting to the point that it needs to be repaired. How long does a investigation take?.
I have a 2000 Dodge Durango, and I have been experiencing, front suspension problems. When you are turning or driving at any rate of speed it makes a creeking noise, and a clicking noise. I took it to goodyear and they told me the ball joints need to be replaced, upper and lower. There is only 52000 miles on my truck, I took it to the dealer and they said they can not duplicate the problem. The cost for repair is over $1000. 00 dollars. With all the complaints you are reciiveing I think there should be a recall and the dealers should be repairing the problems at there expense.
On occasion when I am turning sharp the front suspension will pop. I have heard this sound ever since the vehicle was purchased (new). The service facility at the Dodge dealer was unable to find anything wrong.
When the vehicle went over bumps or made turns the front suspension made loud noises. This occurred at any speed but was more noticeable at slow speeds.
When going over ripples or bumps in the road at around 15 to 35 mph, you can hear a strange knocking noise coming from the right front suspension. Also, you can notice the looseness in the suspension when going over ripples when making a sharp right turn. A total of 3 times vehicle has been in shop (kims of laurel). The 1st time I took to be service, the dealer made a false statement that the rotors needed turning (I was charge for turning rotors when that wasn't the problem. After complaining, charges were waived). I was without out vehicle the 2nd time for a total of 18 days and the problem still wasn't solved. Had to take vehicle back the 3rd time and as soon as I drove off lot, the looseness and knocking noise was very noticeable when going over bumbs. Problem still exists. Very unhappy with service.
I bought a used 1998 Dodge Durango with 24,000 miles in Feb 14th 2003. This was a Dodge certified used car. I also purchased an extra warranty package for $900. 00. After 60 days I had a clunking noise in the front end. I called the Dodge garage from which I had purchased the vehicle and they had it towed. They called me back and said I had a big problem. This is what happened the right front axel, ball joint upper arm assembly had broke apart causing extensive damage with a total of $1700. 00 my responsability. They said Dodge would not cover it because it was a four wheel drive. They said my extended Dodge warranty would not cover the front suspension on the four wheel drive. Now I read that many vehicles have had the same problem. Remind you this vehicle only had 24,000 miles on it and they told me that they wore out!!!!!!!!!! at my expense.
Loud popping noise in suspension of 2002 Dodge Durango; loosened steering.
I own a 2002 Dodge Durango and have had the ball joints replaced 3 weeks ago. I also had the car realligned. The car is now out of allign pulling to the right when I brake and making an awful clunking noise when I brake. I was told it was a suspension issue and that is why the vechile will not stay alligned. I have already gone through 3 sets of tires since I bought the car!.
I purchased a used 2000 Dodge Durango at lee automall, saco, maine, on 03-06-03. I was informed a 150 point check had been performed and the brakes were new on used vehicles on their lot. My first maintenance/oil change was 04/03 at lee automall, auburn, me. I provided a concern that the front brakes had been scwell'g at each slow down or stop and that brake dust was accumulat'g on the tire rims. The brakes were checked and I was informed that they were in excellent condition and that the scwell'g sound I was hearing is normal performance due to a new kind of brake pads that used car dealerships install on used vehicles. 2 days after the front brakes began to scwell again and brake dust was appear'g on the tire rims. 2 wks after svc/maintenance I noticed that each time I drove across a bump or cement bridge the Durango would jolt from one side to the other. Whereby, I had a difficult time control'g the steer'g. I brought the Durango in for svc/maintenance on 07/09/03 to lee automall in auburn, me for f/u care. I explained to the service rep that the front brakes cont'd to scwell and that the suspension was not perform'g well. I expressed that it was difficult to maintain control of the steer'g each instance that I drove over a bump or cement bridge. I phoned the service rep on 07/10/03 to receive a status on the vehicle. I was told that all 4 shocks (no good), 2 tires (worn-no tread), and a serpetine belt (cracked) had to be replaced. I owned the Durango for 3 months and I'm being told that all 4 shocks have to be replaced. I picked the Durango up on 07/12/03 and all was well until 07/13/03. The shocks were replaced, two new tires, and the brakes--I was told that the brakes are in excellent condition, a great amount of padd'g remained and that it is just a character flaw. As of 07/15/03 the front brakes continue to scwell, brake dust collects on the rims and I continue to have a difficult time handl'g the steer'g when I drive over a bump or a cement bridge.
When turning in either direction with minor road imperfections, vehicle jumps and pulls to the opposite direction. Also a noise can be heard coming from the rear of vehicle. Cause of the problem has not been determined. Vehicle would drift dangerously into opposite lanes when slight road bumps are present. Consumer stated tire and suspension seem to be bouncing more than normal. Tire pressure was changed from 31 psi to 40 psi with no improvement to wheel bounce.
There was squeaking noise in front end. Also, the right wheel suspension was loose. The cause of both failures was undetermined.
Consumer states while traveling over bumpy roads consumer would hear a noise coming from front end of vehicle due to suspension.
When making a turn there is a loud noise coming from the front suspension.
