Keyswitch will not turn. . . Sometimes it does fine, other times it locks up. It has been happening several times a week. Fiddling with it, or hitting it, will sometimes cause it to unlock.

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated that the key does not turn in the ignition. The failure has progressively worsened. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by a mechanic or dealer. The current mileage was 54,000 and failure mileage was 49,000.

Regarding the ignition problem with the proper key being inserted and not turning. . I had the same problem several times and was also stranded. I learned if you put the key in and tap the end of the key (as if you're trying to tap it further into the ignition) with a rubber handled screwdriver a couple times it will then turn and start right up.

We purchased an 07' Dodge Grand Caravan June 07 and have had nothing but problems w/ it since shortly after the purchase. It has been in the shop twice for the same issue and is continuing to have the problem. When we had it in the last time we were told Chrysler was working on the problem and would have something during the month of August . . . Well I phoned sept 11 12:15 pm and was told at that time they still had heard nothing in regards to the issue. It started out that the van would not shift into gear when coming to a stop . . . Feels like the transmission is going to drop out at times. It then moved to doing this while in motion as well . . . The dealer assured us that nothing is going to happen it is a computer problem that Chrysler is working on. There are other known customers w/ the same problem. When we had it in the shop the first time a dx was ran on the computer to reset everything . . . Didn't help at all. Had it back in a week later for 9+days and at that time they dropped the transmission out and replaced the clutches and something else too. As soon as we drove it off the lot it was back to square one. My key has gotten stuck in the ignition once so far . . . Didn't take it in but did phone to let them know about the issue. That happened during the month of July . . . . Now my back automatic doors will not open from the inside switch located near the doors, and my passenger side window was rolled down yesterday (09/15/07) and didn't want to go back up. I did finally get it up but scared to try and roll it down again.

My passenger and driver power windows stop working, sometimes for long periods of time. In addition, the ignition key will not turn from it's locked position (steering wheel is "not" locked).

Lock cylinder engages column lock and will not disengage. Ongoing problem that has gotten increasing harder to get the column to release. Per dealer TSB on problem. Will have to have drilled out and replaced.

This is the second time that I have replaced the ignition cylinder lock. The first time at around 40,000 miles and the key wouldn't turn in the lock at all. This time the key would turn, but it was very stiff. Ignition froze up. The key will only turn half the way. Vehicle was towed to dealer, and the ignition housing was replaced.

The ignition wires and spark plugs failed and were replaced.

At 48,000 miles vehicle been experiencing ongoing / intermittent problem with engine stalling while driving or at a stop position. Been in dealer shop on five occasions, and dealer was unable to duplicate the problem.

While driving on highway, van started shaking, turned out to be the distributor needed to be replaced (not the cap).

Ignition failed. Yh.

Consumer has had problems with vehicle 3 months after vehicle was purchased. A valve had to be changed at 24,000 miles later while vehicle was brand new. Currently, vehicle emitts black smoke. There has been no remedy thus far for problems. Sliding door rattles, dealer made an adjustment, front passenger door rattles when closing. Engine hesitates, misses, and squeals, dealer replaced belts for the squealing. While turning steering wheel, there is a grinding noise in the front end, dealer performed TSB 19-05-98. Spark plugs were replaced due to being worn. Gear level was hard to get out of park. The left visor would not stay up, delaer found a broken clip.

Intermittent stalling.

Engine stalls on freeway without warning, caused crash, rearended by another vehicle. Dealer has not duplicated problem after seven times, no repairs.

Engine will die suddendly at any speeds and without warning possibly due to bad computer, after waiting 15-20 minutes vehicle will restart. Dealer cannot dtermine cause.

We purchased a used 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan in December of 1997. It has an intermittent failure. During cold weather, occasionally the engine quits running. Sometimes failures occur every few days; sometimes they are more than a month a part. Failures occur following a cold start as the engines gets close to or reaches normal operating temperature. The failure usually happens from 9 to 31 minutes after the vehicle is started. Failures occur when the outdoor temperature is below about 400f. Failures most commonly occur when the minivan has been parked in a garage that is warmer than the ambient outdoor temperature. The engine quits running. This has happened while at a stop, while driving on local streets, and while driving on the interstate. Sometimes it recovers and sometimes it must be manually restarted. It appears that if the throttle is closed, the engine must be restarted manually and if the throttle is open, the engine recovers. When this failure occurs, the speedometer drops rapidly toward zero. It does not reflect the speed of the vehicle. Schaumburg Dodge has made at least seven unsuccessful attempts to diagnose and repair this problem.

Vehicle stalls out while driving with no warning. When this occurs no steering/instrument controls are operative.
