1 Engine Exhaust System problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2009

While I was on my way to work my car started running really bad like I was going to stop. There was smoke coming from tail pipe. This had been going on for a while. I drove a little further the engine just died.

2 Engine Exhaust System problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2009

While idling at a stop light an officer of the law was behind me as the light change I made my way to my destination only to be stopped by said officer. He stated that when I pulled away at the light there was a big smoke trail leaving my exhaust. I informed him of the many troubles with the 2. 7l Chrysler engine he informed me that if I continue to drive I would be cited for epa violations. The car has 80,432 miles and has been burning oil at a constant rate. Now the oil pressure sending unit is leaking also which by reading some complaints is what happens just before total breakdown. Something has to be done about this will cost aprx. $2600 to rebuild engine.

3 Engine Exhaust System problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2008

I purchased the car used in December 2007, it had 147,000 miles on it. Since I purchased it I have had the oil changed twice. On the morning of may 7, 2008, I checked the oil prior to a long trip and found it to be 1 quart low. I added additional oil to bring the level to full. About 5 miles into the trip, while driving on the freeway at 70 miles an hour, I began hearing a very loud knocking sound coming from the engine. As I began changing lanes, I found that once I slowed down slightly, I was unable to pick up speed again, and I was slowly loosing speed. As I entered the off ramp the oil light began to flicker. At the end of the off ramp, my car died at the stop sign, and would not start again, leaving me in a very unsafe place. I placed the car in neutral and attempted to push it into a parking lot from the drivers door in order to be able to turn the steering wheel or apply the brakes if needed. I was unable to push from that position, so I was forced to take the risk of pushing from the rear of the vehicle. By sheer luck the car rolled between a street sign and a parked vehicle, and came to a stop when it hit a bush just before rolling into the ditch. I was informed by my mechanic that the rod knock was caused by a severe buildup of oil sludge in the engine. I was offered 2 options to repair the vehicle; 1) have a remanufactured 2. 7 l engine installed that had been modified to combat this problem, or 2) have a 3. 2 or 3. 5 l engine from another Intrepid or concord installed, which would involve no modifications since the transmission and exhaust systems for all three of the engines were identical. To my surprise, the estimate for installing the larger engine was less than installing the same size engine, even considering the peripheral parts such as air conditioning, power steering, etc. That would need to come along with the larger engine! all told, I will have spend $3000 to purchase the car and nearly the same amount to repair it.

4 Engine Exhaust System problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2007

The 2. 7l v6 engine in my 2001 Dodge Intrepid failed. This vehicle had only 70,000 miles and is in good-to-excellent condition. It has had regular oil changes over the life of the vehicle and is well maintained. Upon mechanic examination, they determined that the entire engine needed to be replaced due to extreme internal damage that caused the oil and water to mix in the block. They also tested for floro-carbons in the exhaust, which was off the charts. The vehicle is out of warranty and the out of pocket expense for this repair is nearly $5,000. 00.

5 Engine Exhaust System problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2007

(1) heading to work at about 8:00 am and started car(2001 Dodge Intrepid) as usual and went down some main roads leading up to the expressway. Got on the entrance ramp to the expressway and got up to 70 mph. Slowed down to 55 mph for construction and after getting through the construction tried to accelerate. (2) started as a quite clanking noise and I just thought that maybe it was exhaust. Slight vibrations and car started to slow a bit. Then louder clanking that could only be described as metal in a blender and the car shut down luckily I was able to coast up an off ramp that was coming up on my right but had to stop on the busy street that the ramp led onto. Lots of cars were passing. Had no choice but to be late my job and have the car towed. (3) nothing was done to correct the failure because of the expense to replace the entire engine. A rod shot straight through the oil pan. Old part is still in vehicle and is sitting in the driveway of a family member. Was told that it was due to oil sludge buildup in the engine.

6 Engine Exhaust System problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2007

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. While driving 65 mph, the contact heard a very loud clicking noise coming from the engine compartment. Shortly afterwards, the motor stopped running and white smoke appeared from the exhaust. The vehicle would not restart. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. A mechanic advised him to replace the entire motor. The vehicle is still at the contact's home and has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 110,000.

7 Engine Exhaust System problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2004

About 2 months ago my oil was burning up and I had white smoke coming from the exhaust. I had it looked at and the problem was unknown. I had the oil changed and filter changed several times within 2 months (due to oil burning up). A couple weeks ago I was driving on the highway when my engine started to sound like a semi truck so I pulled off the highway. I checked the oil which was fine and there was nothing smoking so I was going to take it to my dads house to figure out what was wrong. When I got back in the car it wouldn't start. I had it looked at and now they are saying my engine is history. I found out oil sludge caused the problem. I have 3 years left to pay off a car that I can't drive and can not afford to fix the problem at this time. Even if I tried for a used engine I would be on a wating list (which tells you something right there.

8 Engine Exhaust System problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2004

While driving 60-65 mph, the consumer smelled heat and saw some smoke. The consumer pulled over and noticed the engine was on fire. The vehicle was serviced and the fire was due to a water pump falling apart interactions with the motor. Engine was filled with coolant which the oil to blow out the dip stick and onto the exhaust, which led to the fire.
