I also produced receipts/printouts for maintenance (oil changes) performed on my vehicle. Prior to the car stopping, there was no warning of any type ~ no oil or engine light to warn of a potential problem.

This engine failure could have been a severe safety factor if it had failed 24 hours sooner on the toll road at high speed.

43 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2005

On 11/29/05 I was driving home from work on I-10 through the deserted and hurricane katrina storm ravaged section of new orleans east when my 2001 Intrepid seized up and would not run. I barely managed to safely get the car off of the interstate and onto the now desolate morrison road exit. As a woman alone I was extremely frightened to have my car abruptly seize up on the interstate and was terrified that it would not make it to a safe place off of the interstate without getting hit. Once I rolled to a stop, however, I discovered that I was in an extremely unsafe area as the area had been flooded and looted after hurricane katrina, there were no businesses open to help me due to the extent of the storm damage in the area, aaa told me it could be hours before they could get to me, and it was going to be dark within an hour. It was so dangerous that the national guard and then the state police would not leave until aaa arrived. Once at the garage, we were given the Chrysler song and dance that the car engine failed because of sludge and that it had to be our fault. They offered to happily replace the engine for a sum of $7,000. No mention was made of all of the complaints that Chrysler has had on the 2001 Intrepid engine and the numerous failures of this engine. Due to the eminent danger that Chrysler placed me in - continuing to allow me as a registered 2001 Intrepid owner to drive a vehicle which they knew was going to fail or had a high change of failing - perhaps some of the top brass at Chrysler should be deserted in the middle of a storm ravaged area with only looters for company so that they can fully understand the extreme danger they have placed consumers in simply because we are driving their vehicles!.

54 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 02/23/2005

Driving home from work, speed approx. 65 m. P. H. On interstate. Engine made a sharp "bang", no warning lights, bells, nothing to indicate a problem. Appeared to lose power, but never stalled out. Managed to "limp" home (less than 2 miles). Parked vehicle and the engine shut down, on its own. Raised the hood, found nothing to be unusual. Tried to restart the vehicle, it would not restart, only a loud clunking as the engine turned over. Had the car towed to the dealer I had purchased the vehicle from. Was informed that the timing chain had "jumped" and that all of the valves were bent. Was given a "verbal" estimate of $7000. 00-$7500. 00 to repair/replace engine and associated components. I declined. This vehicle had been maintained as required by the manufacturer. All required fluid change intervals had been performed and documented. At no time was I ever informed that this particular engine had issues associated with it. I still have this vehicle, sitting in storage. It has not been touched since being brought back home from the repair facility. I have, and still maintain that this engine failure was not something I could have foreseen and or been responsible for. Now I have been made aware that this is an issue that Chrysler, has been aware of and has denied any liabilities. I was informed by the dealership that offered the costly repair, that Chrysler would not assume any responsibility to repair my car. Now I have been informed by a local repair shop, that Chrysler has been making "selective reparations".
