4 Axle Assembly problem of the 1999 Dodge RAM

Failure Date: 10/10/2000

At 14000 miles the rear end was making grinding sounds, dealer replased berings, shims and seals with a flush job. Now at 56000 the rear end is doing the same, the now tell me that the side and pinion berings seals and shims are bad. This is not right that I should have to pay for this. I have not toed or have had any extra heavy load in the truck. At my milage the truck is hardly broken in, I drove my Chevrolet and Ford truck both 1/2 tons well over 200k miles and never a problem with the rear end. This one the Dodge Ram 2500 diesel in less then 60k the rear end goes two times. The other problems I had I did not make a big stink about them I was told that the truck was out of warranty. So I kept my mouth shut, but this rear end problem is the straw that broke the camels back. I work for a living I don't have money to throw in the wind, this is the problem of the manufacturer, they are the one that should pay for crapy manufacturing. I should have bought a Ford I know they would not have left me with the bill. ( dot number: ).

6 Axle Assembly problem of the 1996 Dodge RAM

Failure Date: 08/20/2000

Rear axle recently started making an audible gear whine/moan when going any speed. The truck has 68,000 miles currently. I have accounts of other people that have owned '96 Ram 1500 trucks that have had similar, if not the same problem that I have experienced. I am concerned about my saftey and the saftey of others if this differential decides to fail and lockup. My warranty is up and this will be a costly fix. Your attention and response would be much appreciated.

7 Axle Assembly problem of the 1997 Dodge RAM

The rearend in the Dodge truck makes a clunk when shifting from park to drive and drive to reverse it will make the same clunk (ring) when driving down the road when the trans. Shifts through the shift pattern. I took it to a dealer to get it checked out they said play in the rear end was normal but tey reprogramed the power control module to lower the rpms so that the clunk would not be heard, they put a $1. 65 sticker on the truck some where . The clunk is still there and sounds louder . I know of three other Dodge trucks with the same noise.

10 Axle Assembly problem of the 1996 Dodge RAM

Failure Date: 06/18/1999

The vehicle had just been repaired by sandusky Chrysler dealership, sandusky, OH, for the previous axle failure. Traveling east on the ohio turnpike, the vehicle suddenly slowed, like someone just jammed-on my brakes. Within a minute, there were two very loud screetches. My wife, traveling in a rental vehicle behind me, even hear the screetches. Given our previous experience, I immediately stopped at the side of the road. While trying to see what happened, we were informed by construction crews that we could not stay, there, on the side of the highway. They directed us a couple miles up the road, to the next exit. Once off the highway, we stopped to find the driver's side rear wheel sticking out from the fender by a couple inches. On closer inspection, there was smoke coming from between the wheel and the backing plate. The wheel assembly was starting to separate from the axle housing, again. We called for a tow truck, to return the vehicle to the repairing dealership. Upon their inspection, the wheel bearings were again burned. And, yes, the wheel assembly and axle shaft were leaving the vehicle.

11 Axle Assembly problem of the 1996 Dodge RAM

Failure Date: 06/05/1999

The tire, rim, brake drum and axle shaft separated from the axle housing. The assembly wedged under vehicle. When it popped out, it flew up and landed directly in front of another vehicle. When the assembly separated, apparently the other (remaining) drive wheel became disconnected from the engine; our exhaust brake could not slow us down. Additionally, the brakes were spongy, and apparently not working. We slid to a stop on what remained of the axle housing. When we exited the vehicle, there was a flame shooting from the end of the axle housing, where the axle shaft would normally be. This flame was approx. 1. 5-2 feet from the fuel filler tube. Immediately prior to the accident, there was a very loud screetch sound. Within a minute, the wheel assembly came apart. After repairs were made, the same axle problems reappeared.

12 Axle Assembly problem of the 1997 Dodge RAM

Failure Date: 03/15/1999

The dealer has the same belief as I, that the defect occurred at the assembly plant due to the fact the rear gear housing is sealed and no moisture could have entered, the housing assembly from the highway. This vehicle has highway driving only, to its credit.
