Fifth gear loss is caused by ( nut holding fifth gear backing off) as I was told by dealer. This is a common problem according to the dealer (TSB 21-10-98) cost to fix this is $400. 00-$799. 00 and they said it could happen again. I was told it was caused by backing off the throtle in fifth gear. This is a clear case of design defect in the transmission. I know of many people with this truck who are having the same problem.
5th gear lost while on I-37 norhtbound in corpus christi, TX. Shifted up from 4th gear to 5th after entering freeway. No 5th gear.
I have owned this truck for less than 1 year and fifth gear has gone out 5 times. I previously had a 1998 Dodge Ram pickup and after fifth gear going out four times I had to replace the whole transmission. My son owns a 1998 Dodge Ram pick up and has had to replace the transmission and fifth gear twice. What is wrong? please help us.
The dealers were notified and they weren't able to fix the problem. I was told that other people have reported similar problem and that it happens on hot days. Since they were not able to repeat the problem when they test drove my vehicle they were not able to pin point the problem to attend to. They didn't think it was a safety issue. I disagree! here is the problem. After a complete stop the vehicle sometimes would hesitate to accel when I step on the gas peddle. I hear the rpm going up as I press the gas but the vehicle doesn't respond accordingly. I see the safety issue in these possible situations: when I am making a left turn after a complete stop if my vehicle doesn't get out of the intersection as I expect it to, it could turn into a dangerous situation for me and the on coming traffic. Another situation would be when I enter the freeway after a complete stop. The vehicle must accelerate adaquately in order for it to join the on coming traffic. I thank you so much for your services. I'm glad that I can turn to someone who will listen to my concerns. My encounters with the dealers were not pleasant soon after they sold me the car. Thank you again. I hope to hear from you soon.

Vehicle shifts into neutral when hitting bumps in the road, manufacturer said that this is normal. Nlm.
Nut on transmission is slowly loosening when shifting. When the nut falls off, 5th gear is no longer working. Dealer will not authorize repairs of transmission until the bolt is completely off transmission, and 5th gear fails. This pick up is used for pulling boat and carring a camper. Eventhough the loose parts were replaced by the dealer, the customer is concerned about the defect possibly causing an accident.
There is a buzzing noise in the transmition when put in reverse after a cold start. I have had the truck in 4 times now to remedy the problem. They say all the trucks have this problem and it is a non harmful problem that a modification has been made for. The have preformed the modification and it hasn't fixed the problem. I am bringing the truck in again for them to do the mod again. My problem is that I am about out of warrenty, and they are telling me this is a harmful problem. I have mechanic friends that agree with me when I say it sounds like the transmition isn't getting fluid when it is first put in reverse. If what myself and the mechanic friends I have are right, the transmition will eventually break. There are alot of people I know that have Dodges, and none of them have this problem. Why can"t they fix this problem?.
